"You're willing to take your grandfathers partner from him so that you can take his place!?" Sai said, the shock evident in his tone.

Stratus thought to Sai.

((Btw, congrats on the thousandth post. Yay!!))

"I would not expect you to understand; there are other customs that are still worse than those my town follow. Make no mistake in the fact that there are reasons for this old tradition," Damiano paused to look at the expression Sai was giving him. He could see how much shock there was and the longer he gazed, the more evident the mounting distrust became. What did Damiano care? They were simple combatants, on a journey to attain some false sense of glory. His tale was more grim and by far less rewarding. "I can already see that your ignorance was bliss in this matter," Damiano concluded after some thought.

Ark said to his companion in a quiet thought. Damiano thought back. Neither mage nor spirit would say more to each other, for there was nothing left to discuss.

"I will explain this much of my family's traditions: Those of the Partigiano family that enter the Maghi Anima are given the secrets to a form of magic we consider more spiritual than not. We empower our spells by using our own spiritual energies, losing a bit of ourselves with each casting. This is a technique which can be perfected only when one becomes the family sage, a goal which only the most magically and spiritually attuned magi can ever hope to grasp," once more did the young mage pause. Perhaps he had said too much of his own abilities, but something was telling him he should most likely quit while he was ahead. Still, he wanted his probably companions to know who he was and where he came from in this strange and wonderful world. With a sigh, Damiano continued, "I take pride in what I do, however this does not mean I condone all this. I will uphold traditions in knowing that every member of my family, from my cousins to my grandchildren and their cousins will want to have this power as well. Remember that to win means no glory, simply more responsibility. To lose would mean never being able to attain a position higher than an accomplished magus."

"I can understand tradition, but this seems like something that should never have been allowed to become tradition in the first place. You do realize that the psychological stresses of being separated from his partner, his other half, could kill him, don't you?" Sai asked.

Stratus thought to Sai.

"Damiano... I apologize, I shouldn't judge you when I truly don't know anything of your people. Perhaps we should get packed up and head out. Maybe you would care to teach me more while we travel, and I'll try to keep a more open mind."

Vilya couldn't believe what she had heard either, and was about to express her shock when she caught Tura's violet eyes.
It stood against everything she had been taught.
Tura's voice was perfectly calm and Vilya, for the first time in a while saw the predator in her partner's nature.
She fixed Damiano with a troubled look as her companion stood and stretched.
"I'm not sure I understand why that's necessary. How does your grandfather feel about this...tradition?" She spoke the word as if it had just sprouted legs and was crawling around the camp site.

Tura purred, pressing Vilya's hand to the harness with her large beak.

"My grandfather has mixed views on this tradition, as do most members of our family. Where we find the act of taking away a companion terrible, we understand that it is necessary for the strong to survive. My town wasn't always a very peaceful place, and because of the feuds and battles that took place, this tradition was made to keep a balance. No doubt you know of how pack animals, such as wolves, perform a similar contest of strength to gain leadership?" Damiano's voice was calm as he replied to Vilya. He was pleased to see that Sai had chosen to be more reasonable and inclined his self to learn of this tradition. However, no matter how much Damiano explained, much would never be explained. Some family secrets were never meant to be revealed.

"As for the moment, I agree with Sai. The day is passing us by as we sit here and talk of matters that aren't immediately important. I admit, I will likely be as old as my father before I can challenge my village's sage for the position he holds. By then, my grandfather will have been defeated either by family or time," Damiano smiled carelessly. He didn't feel like being serious any longer. The meal was done, and it had been good. The company was fine, though perhaps a tad mismatched. He foresaw many amusing exploits in the near future. Hopefully, he thought, some would be worthwhile.

Without another word Vilya jumped onto the gryphon's back, keeping her eyes away from the other combatants.
Tura looked back over her shoulder and then purred; Her violet eyes were warm as her human companion stared down into them.
They seemed to say; 'you cannot right all the apparent wrongs in this world child, but you can keep an open mind and perhaps some of those wrongs may seem different with time.'
Vilya spoke the words as Tura's mind voice echoed through her thoughts.
"Maa'et Kerr ib...sesmet."
It was an old spell, older than most the gryphon used. She had taught it to Vilya carefully, making sure she knew it inside and out. It was almost as if Tura feared it forgotten.
Slowly the gryphon's shape rippled, as if one was staring at her through the disturbed surface of a pond. Her features changed and warped, twisting in upon themselves or else growing in a confusion that could not be focused on.
When it finally settled again Tura was no longer a gryphon, but a sleek, black mare, complete with bridle and bit that rested lightly in Vilya's gloved hand.
The illusion spell would decieve anyone who wasn't looking for it with the depth of magic it was set at. Most average mages would not be working at this depth.

((You can skip ahead and put us in the town if you want now Stoic, and lets see if we can get our people back.))

((Alright, guys, I know that I don't deserve your forgiveness for being so horrendously late on making a post but here it is: I'm extremely sorry, I really am. I've meant to make a post pretty much every day, but I get home from work and I feel like all I have the energy for is sitting and staring into space. I don't know if I've ever told any of you, except creed (who also works there) and Azure, but I work in a warehouse/plant where we move frozen food onto semi trailers, and it's -30 degrees Fahrenheit in there on top of that. But anyways, that's my excuse, accept it if you want. Otherwise yell at me, I dunno...

Alright, on to things story related. I know the group was talking about boarding an airship and taking that to the next village to avoid encountering any guards whilst traveling. Thing is, I can't remember which village we were going to go to to board the airship. So, I'm just going to choose the closest one. Now class, if you will all kindly open your books to page 1 we will see a colorful, if somewhat crudely dictated, map representing the island that our heroes are currently residing upon. According to the little gray line, which indicates path of travel and also which I have not happened to have updated lately, we see that our heroes are currently in the dragon Sages village. That of course is inaccurate. creed and giga are currently in the village northwest of there, and the rest of us are about halfway between, near the mountain range. I'm just going to say "What the hell?" and send us there as well. Alright, any questions?

Also, I don't believe that we were quite finished with travel preparations, so I'm gonna wing it. Please excuse me, all, for minor modding.))

The group arrived at the edge of the village as the sun was just settling against the horizon. Vilya had ridden on Tura, who was magically disguised. The others had ridden on Ark. Damiano had had no reason to conceal himself or his partner and had offered Sai and Kin a ride seeing as neither could ride their own creature on this trip. Stratus was safely concealed within his binding stone, and not happy about it at all. Damiano brought Ark down next to Vilya and Tura so that his new friends and allies could dismount.

"Well, we're here. I suppose the first order of business, for me anyways, is to find some new clothes. Also, do you think we should try to find an airship now, do you think any are even taking off? Or should we get rooms at an inn and head out in the morning?" Sai asked. He was not asking anybody in particular though, merely voicing his thoughts.

((No worries gov' you take as long as you need. We can meet the of a ship captain at the place we stay for the night...and are we going to meet up with the other two now?))

"I'll go find an inn." Vilya volunteered. "Sleeping in the woods isn't the best way to replinish your strength."
Tura walked on and together they passed through the gates of the town relatively undisturbed. A dog lay at the side of the guardhouse and raised a lethargic eyebrow as they went by. Suddenly it rose up and began barking.
Tura shot it a dirty look through large black horse eyes.
<> The gryphon sighed.
<> Vilya thought back at her as the guard grabbed his dog by the collar and tried to yell over the din.
The town was simple enough, worn cobbles covered most of the roads, turned golden-red in the setting sun. From the gate they entered the houses stood straight and tall even as the road sloped gently downwards, their roofs making a giant's staircase above the pair's heads.
An inn wasn't hard to find, she checked it quickly front and back just to make sure there were no imperial guards lurking anywhere in the vicinity before taking Tura into the stables. No one had seen them thankfully, the stable boy was nowhere to be found.
Tura dropped the spell and shook herself irritably, whisps of black smoke coiled off her feathers and vanished into the air.
"Right, this looks like a good enough place."

Vilya made her way back to the gate they had come from, Tura waiting patiently in her stone. The inn had enough room, and was fairly clean. It was the food however that had sold her on it. The smell of roasting meat and hot apple pies was almost too much, especially since she had not eaten since the early morning.

((Dunno about the other two. I told them both to cool their heels for a bit, so I don't know if they've even been keeping up on things. I'll get ahold of them both in the morning though and let them know that their presence is once again required.

Also, Raistlin, I'd like to apologize again for modding your character. If you'd like I'll happily edit my post and you can redo Damianos actions yourself.))

Sai removed his sash from his waist and wrapped it around his lower face like a scarf. He doubted it would make much of a difference in concealing his identity, but he figured that every little bit helps. He followed Vilya and Tura into the village and walked right into the first tailors that he saw.

"Welcome, sir. How may I help you?" The tailor asked when Sai walked in.

"Just looking for something new." Sai answered.

"Well, you've come to the right place." The tailor said and motioned to many racks of clothes hanging along the walls and also to many dummies standing about on the floor, each wearing a different style of clothes. "What you see is what I've got, design wise. If you like a cut I can make it for you in any color using any material. So, I'll just give you some time to look around, come to me when you've decided what you want and I'll get started right away."

Sai began to meander through the shop, stopping to look at some of the clothes. He wanted to change his appearance. He stopped in front of a full-length mirror. The scarf actually did conceal a pretty good portion of his face. He though maybe he'd keep that. In the end he decided simple. Cloth boots, baggy pants held up by his sash, a shirt with no sleeves, a simple jacket, and a new scarf. All of these were made of a heavy cotton. The boots, pants, and jacket were all black. The shirt was white. And the scarf was the same blue as his sash. He kept the wraps on his hands that he had worn before. And he still wore his crimson binding stone on a braided necklace.

He paid for it all and left with his old clothes wrapped in a bundle and stuffed into his bag. His purse felt considerably lighter after buying all of that. He had tried to buy efficiently, purposely buying materials that would be durable and that would keep him warm in the cold. Still, the tailor had had to make everything on the spot, and size and dye everything to preference.

He made his way back to the inn that he had seen Vilya go into and walked through the door himself.
PostPosted: Mon Oct 13, 2008 5:11 pm

Kin stayed outside the inn Vilya and Sai had entered and sat down against the wall near the door. He usually felt uncomfortable in such places. The outdoors are what most fit him. Kin pulled his hands out of his golden gauntlets that he had used in the past battles and decided he better take them off since he had wore them for a few days straight now. He placed the metallic equipment in his lap and massaged his sore hands over and over.

Vix cautiously revealed himself and slithered his way towards Kin and curled up into a scaly fortress.

Vix commented, slightly pleased with the results so far.

Kin said.

Vix pointed out. Kin didn't answer, he just stared carefully at his gauntlets that were in his lap.

((well i dunno where creed went so, hypothetically (and I'll edit this if he doesn't agree) Jania would demand to room with him then have him practice while she gathers supplies))

Jania left Raidek in their new room while she went into the town to find a few supplies for the training tomorrow. Rayneer asked cautiously.

"I am NOT an Old hag!" Jania said a little bit loudly as she passed a young man with brown hair entering the inn. Hopefully he didn't notice, not that she cared, she could make him look like a bigger idiot if she wanted.

As Jania left the building she figured she should practice her magic as well. "Glacies meus ut vultus," Jania said as she concentrated on her right hand. Ice slowly formed on all five digits and shaped itself to look like tigers claws had sprouted from her fingers. Jania maintained the spell until she reached the general store before letting the ice on her hand melt away. Such control was easy when she focused, if only she could do it while barely focusing, then she knew she would be close to silent casting her ice.

Jania walked into the general store and asked the manager if they could help her gather medical supplies as she was running low.
