I agree with you there. I know my personal manners can be horrible for the most part, but when I must a turn to somewhat proper manners all americans should know. Simple stuff, but with a strong face and a calm expression even the simple stuff can look impressive.

Quick change of subject. Any of you guys got idea on how to make Gambit from X-men's boots? I am doing the origonal Gambit costume and looking for a few more ideas on it.

Well all I can say is that I would seriously overhaul the required classes. For one thing, IMAO, there are three things that everyone should be taught; Manners, Home Ecconomics (not as an elective), and First Aid. These are survival skills, things that everyone should know.
Manners as survival skills is a bit questionable, but let's roll with it. I'm in a debating mood, hope you don't mind.

Should those survival skills be primarily taught by the school, or is it better to learn things like that from home?

I can live on fruit and instant noodles, and I get a friend to do all my sewing, and so far staying silent has proven better for me than any mannaers I've been able to coax out of my voice, and I've survived all my injuries so far. I don't think i need it, although a course telling you how not to crash into things would certainly be useful to me. *rubs tailbone*

Then again, most people are different. Some people are naturally skilled at feeding and clothing themselves, some people instinctively know how to fix pain, and others are naturally polite. The rest of us are rude klutzes with minimal survival skills (which is why I have a survival and first aid kit), in which those courses would definitely useful. It's quite reasonable that one or more of those would be an elective.

I'm afraid I'll have to counter with another question. Why should the two be mutually exclusive?

Ah, got a reversal goin'. Alright, I'll bite.

No one said they had to be mutually exclusive. I'm just sayin' lessons on how to cook, clean, and survive have always been taught by the parent--long before schools even existed. Why should schools come in and take over in that department? Sure, they can help enforce those lessons. At the very least, schools will give the student a chance to practice whatever skills the home's instilled in him.

You said schools should prepare you for the world. By that, do you mean they should take over the role as parent?

I've never been taught to cook.
I've never been taught to clean.
I developed those things on my own. I'm a horrible cook, but that doesn't mean that I'm incapable.

I don't really learn anything in school that I couldn't teach myself with the right materials. But compared to most kids my age, I'm above average. I'm just lazy when I don't think it's worth my time.

Anyway, I have no idea what they teach people in the areas where you guys live, or in your fancy private schools, but I live pretty much in the middle of no where.

Behind my house is a field, then woods, and across the street is a creek, then railroad tracks that almost never have trains, the canal, a park, then more woods. Around here, we're taught core classes and that's about it. Our extent of electives are art, woodworking, various tech, jewelry, sports med, and lifeguard training.

What you guys are debating over is great, but some of us don't live in an area that has the money to pay for things like that. Actually, where I live, those are things you're expected to know without being taught.

That's nice. One thing, though.

How is it possible to know anything without being taught in one form or another?

From example.
Little kids is one thing, but once you hit double digits, things are just expected from you.

But why shouldn't kids know how to behave? What makes things so that they aren't expected to?

Yeah, but if they don't know, they don't know. There needs to be a teacher, be it a parent, example, video tape, experience, etc.

The problem is that people's expectations of children are declining. People tend to assume that kids won't understand things, so they dumb down what the children are exposed to. With less information available, kids learn slower. For an example, just look at old cartoons compared to new ones. Dialogue used to use more difficult words, and shows would refrence world events (the Loony Toons enlisted when America was at war, Freakazoid talked about the President, etc...). Even public service announcements are a thing of the past. There just isn't as much information being made available...with the sad result that more kids today are ignorant.

Quite. At any rate, my parents aren't the ones who cook and clean, but funnily enough, I clean on an almost daily basis. Not my room.

@CBK: I don't even have an elective. The only thing I was allowed to pick this year was Spanish.

I miss that. Even in the "remastered" Disney movies, they'll edit out things that were in the original cut. We gotta put a stop to that.

Yeah. I hate to sound like one of those "When I was your age!" types, but it really does seem like that from what I can see. When I was younger, which wasn't even that long ago, you couldn't watch TV as a kid without getting some kind of education. Even G.I. Joe managed to sneak in educational content, and that was a show about soldiers and guns!
