get back, you're not her, I saw her die, GET BACK!> his voice screamed within their minds. He fell to his knees, one hand on the ground and the other on his forehead. "GET BACK!" he roared, a blast of fire emerging from every exposed area of skin on him, evaporating the water but passing around Terpsichore regardless of his knowledge of her nature.

Umm...Roland?

I don't know how to do lightning yet.

Joe chewed his lip, but before he could come up with a useful plan, it was already happening. He closed his eyes and tried to focus.
His Avatar state faded away. Roland became more clear. Joe lost power, but he gained what he needed: focus and experience. Roland spoke slowly and deeply, and Joe felt power in his body.
He clapped his hands together and slid them across each other, and lightning poured out of his hands and onto the ground. Joe laughed excitedly.
"What's next?" he called to Siber as he watched the Avatar struggled internally.

Crap, crapcrapcrapcrapdamn, Siber thought as Joe slid out of his avatar-esque state. "Um... is there any way you could bring down air from the ionosphere to cool down the air around those two enough that the water will reform and that electricity can flow through the water enough so it can hit Abaddon?"
There was no way Siber could double-summon with a seventh-level, even here, even with the gateway to Hell wide open. He didn't have any gadgets on his person... they needed Kayla. Or Paul, or Alan.
Terpsichore was keeping her composure remarkably well, siphoning off steam into the air around her and sucking in water in the form of vapor. Siber thought for a few moments. The water mains...
"Joe!" He lowered his voice, backing away and looking for a manhole. There was one! Hopefully, the move over to Crossover had been complete enough that the water pipes below the city still did their job. He ran towards it. "Help me take this off! She needs cold water, and then you can go berserk again and take him down."

Joe nodded at Siber's request and began using his remaining power to draw down what Terpsichore needed. When he was satisfied, he dashed over to Siber and looked down at the manhole.
"Back up," he said with a savage grin. His eyes flared their signature white fire as he slammed the ground beside the manhole with his fist. The cover popped off and Joe stepped back. He threw his head back as the fire started from his hands and feet, consuming his body.
"Tell me what you need me to do," he said to Siber.

"Umm..." Siber really wasn't sure what the best course of action was. Terpsichore eyed the manhole hungrily when she saw it was successfully unscrewed, but most of her attention seemed to be diverted dealing with Abaddon's odd rage.
"Well, at the very least, be ready to unleash some lightning if we ever get the water around him. A solid blast won't hurt him, apparently, so we need something that'll really knock him for loop; something to fry his whole body, if we can do it. That's why it would be good to get him wet." I think.
Keldan murmured, thinking.
"Jonathan Helmsborough," Terpsichore said, still with his past lover's face, "Why am I not here? Why are we not together?" As if she was reminding him. But she was just buying time.
"Joe, see if you can bring up the water from down there and just blast Abaddon with it. Once it's within reach, Terpsichore ought to be able to take over and inundate him. The instant water touches him, she can draw it out of his body to establish a viable connection. Then you hit him with the electricity. I think that'll work."
Now, Siber just had to sit back and hope the whole thing worked. And keep an eye out for tricks from Helmsborough, but that was a given.

"I saw you die!" Helmsborough yelled. "I saw them kill you!" Periodic bursts of steam would come from his eyes - tears evaporating the second they left his body. "I saw it! Begone!" His head was still down, refusing to look into her face again.

With a grin, Joe raised his arms slowly, as though struggling with a heavy burden. Soon, he was twisting them and waving them through a complex pattern. The water raised itself from the manhole, like a tired snake.
Joe's dance ended with a sudden two-handed thrust at Helmsborough. The water blasted forward with a sudden burst of speed, gushing around and over Helmsborough. With a final bit of magic, Joe made sure that it stayed in place.
Then, he felt his Avatar state slide slowly away as he gathered his power for lightning once again.

The problem of Helmsborough still being at a sufficient temperature to instantly boil water that even approached him became evident almost immediately.

Terpsichore kept the water in place around Helmsborough so that it formed a sphere. At the same time, she said, through the water, "Why didn't you stop them? Why were you unable to save me?"
Time for some science, thought Siber. As the pressure on water increases, its capacity to be vaporized decreases. Terpsichore, being as close to a water god as we're going to get, can provide plenty a restriction on volume, that is, pressure. Even so, it's a strain on her, so I can channel her some extra energy. Joe can fire his lightning at any time, as long as he maintains a steady stream for at least a second. She'll take the time then to force the pressure high enough to achieve a touch, which, given the close proximity, might not even be necessary if he's hit hard enough.
He paused for a moment. Terpsichore, did you get all that?
I already knew 'all that.'
Of course, m'lady. I did not mean to offend.

Siber spoke in a fierce whisper, knowing the water barrier would muffle his words to Helmsborough's ears. "Hit him now, Joe! Kill him until he's dead!"

"I tried!" Helmsborough sobbed in response, his voice cracking as he slammed his first to the ground. "I tried!" he repeated, a little weaker, punching the ground again. He suddenly spasmed, one, twice.

With an anguished roar from Helmsborough, four more chains burst from his back. They stretched out and attached to buildings, and the space between them turned absolutely black. Then it hit them what it really was - it was a flood of the same un-light as when the dragons they first encountered had shifted back to Next Door.

This was confirmed by what emerged.

On the right side, the three dragons emerged from the darkness, breathing fire upon Helmsborough. On the left, a vague metallic approximation of a man fell outward and landed on the ground. It approached Helmsborough and picked him up by a chain.

"Pull yourself together!" its voice snapped.

((I like this epic fight. It's epic.

Paul's fight? Not quite so epic, but rather pleasantly gritty.))

Joe nodded and clenched his jaw as he poured lightning out of his hands at the sphere obscuring Helmsborough. It felt good, to have such control over such a wild element. Even now, Joe could feel in struggling to break free, to tear and burn everything, instead of just its target. Joe had to maintain rigid control.
Then the enemies began to appear.
"Oh damn," Joe said, lowering his hands slightly. His control wavered, and the lightning shot away, some still at Helmsborough, some at the dragons and the metal man, and some back at Joe. He was hurled back into a car.
"Well. That worked out...well?" Joe shook his head to clear it as he stood back up.

The dragons ceased to breathe fire upon Helmsborough. They circled in the air, glaring at the combatants. The lightning that had been directed at them was the lightning that had turned on Joe, as an electric attack on a flying creature was essentially useless.

The metal man spasmed as he received both his and Helmsborough's shocks, throwing Helmsborough to the ground.

"Avatar Jonathan Helmsborough," the metal man irately intoned, "If you do not soon resume combat, Abaddon may need to find a new Avatar. What is your malfunction?"

"She's dead, she's dead, she's dead..." the avatar repeated, over and over.

Terpsichore was invisible at this point, swallowed by the darkness, but Siber could still feel her. She walked back into Hell of her own accord and sealed the split, effectively unsummoning herself without any attention-drawing expenditure of energy. Siber raised a cautionary hand to Joe, uncertain of how this sequence of events would turn out. There was a nagging question, though...
If Helmsborough fails as an avatar, Abaddon still needs one. The dragons said they would put in a good word... or something... for the two of them, so theoretically, Siber and Joe were in a position, at the moment, having shown great prowess in magery, to take over that particular occupation. More accurately, Siber was in a position to take it over because his morals seemed to waver on a slightly different frequency than Joe's; it was not an entirely unpleasant prospect for him to consider becoming the voice of who was effectively a god.
Keldan warned, but he was considering it, too.

There was a thoughtful silence.

Joe cracked his neck as he stepped forward. "Hey now," he said loudly at the metallic man. "Back off of him, OK? He's having some trouble, so it would be wise to back off! Besides, this is our fight!" He stopped a few meters away. "Seriously, leave him alone."
Joe looked ready for a fight. A noble stance, to defend one's enemies from those who would probably try to hurt them. Perhaps Joe's natural response, or perhaps an urge to protect the honor of their fight.
Or perhaps Joe's facade of a simple, honorable person wasn't as different from Siber as he thought. Surely, Joe's motives were driven by an urge for satisfaction for every side, and so "goodness," but beneath it all ran deep self-preservation. If he could perhaps sway Helmsborough, he'd be one hell of an ally.
Joe's hands lit up as he prepared his own avatar state for combat.
