Being nice clearly wasn't working. A scowl was developing on Aurian's face. Maybe she needed to try a firmer tone.
"Let's go!" she snapped. Her heels dug into the dragon's side with a bit more force - it might actually feel the movement through its tough hide this time.
The dragon lurched forward. Aurian fumbled the grip on her lance, her perfect form falling apart. She was in no danger of dropping it, thankfully. She'd just need to readjust if she wanted to make a critical hit against the target.
... When they finally reached it. Aurian glanced back to the starting point, noticing that they really hadn't moved very far at all. But, she consoled herself, at least they were moving.

JOUSTIN' It was when Arnie got to thinking about visiting his kids that he began to zone out. Little Grraana with her wolfy pigtails, Arooof and his perpetually wet nose. They were just adorable. And he had ruined his chances at watching them grow up. All for a woma— West's lance crashed into the target, interrupting Arnie's train of thought. What was going on again? Oh, right. He had been saddled by some ignorant whippersnapper and was now being forced to run in straight lines. The wolf skidded to a stop and turned, growling up at the demon with thinly-veiled hatred. "Good job, Arnie," West said, patting the wolf on his neck. Arnie's growl faded, and he dropped into a seated position as West dismounted. A few seconds later his tail began to wag. They were on the right track. "Good boy!" she told her mount, patting his neck. She made sure they were firm but not bruising thumps, enough for him to feel properly. "Let's keep it up."
Another rolling step forward. Aurian was slowly growing used to the strange movement, some unusual combination of rolling like a wave mixed with an up-down and a side-to-side. As they went, she firmed her grip on her lance, practicing raising it up to her shoulder like she was about to strike the target. Not that they were anywhere near close, but Aurian thought she was improving with all the practice.

Their progress seemed rather slow. Aurian couldn't tell if others were having the same problem - she'd started so far behind some of them. They might have moved faster, or they might have just had that much of a lead on her.
All she could do was focus on her mount and their own progress.
Suddenly her dragon reared, startled by something in the grass. It leaned backwards. Aurian fought it, shifting her own weight forward and tightening her grip on the reins. After a brief struggle, the dragon settled. Aurian panted as she slumped in her seat. They had made no progress forward, but at least they hadn't gone backwards like the dragon had been intending.

"Slow and steady is fine," Aurian reassured herself and dragon. "Anything is better than backwards progress, right?"
After a scare like that last one, Aurian had made her peace with the idea of moving at a crawl. It hardly seemed like the fast pace that charging something with a lance needed, but Aurian forced those thoughts to the back of her mind. She'd be happy just to stay on target and get there eventually.
