*Makes three boaming claps for Rue.* Wonderful. Simply wonderful explanation of the public school system.

I'm going to take that at face value and say thank you. I do hope you weren't being sarcastic.

Is that right? I've never been in a public school, so i guess it's a little different for me.

What type of school do you go to then? Unless it's radically different from anything I've ever seen passed off as a place of learning, I don't expect much, but I'm curious.

Oh, it was at face value. I personally had issues in the fifth grade. I was smart and short. Needless to say I was the puny kid that did not want to fight, but had feelings so they wanted to keep me back.

It seems that the smarter you are, the harder it is to learn.

In some ways. It is more the fact that the smarter you are the less likely you are to believe people.

Most teachers don't like to be questioned. My history teacher got quite cross with me for asserting that he was incorrect in his assertion that the German Nazi party had chosen the swastika as a symbol because it was a "broken cross" and they hated Christianity. To this day, I see that teacher as a symbol of everything wrong in the education system.

I've been in private and independent schools since I was three, and all of them had a student count of under 400. I am a shy person with strangers, and in fifth grade, one of my teachers tried to cure me of that by getting me to stay after school until I managed to ask him three questions.
@Rue: That's :/ An expression is better to describe this than words.

Indeed.

Hmmm...three questions.
1. Why are you doing this?
2. Is it absolutely necessary?
3. May I go home now?

Actually, I asked him:

1. What can I ask you?
2. What would you ask in my place?
3. Can I go yet?

I'm suddenly bombarded with school advice. I haven't ever studied before. It seems so tedious. But my mother's demanding 5-6 A's. At least even she knows that my P.E. mark is a lost cause. But that probably means I'll need to get the other subjects up to around 90 to get an overall mark of 80-something.

My method in the past was skipping all the homeowrk, and scoring high on all the important things. Like midterms, finals, and projects.

Add in easy sources of extra credit and you have my method for high school.

I'm sorry, but your mother is wasting your time. Public school doesn't teach anything valuable. I could have had a 4.0 GPA had I wanted one (and at one point did). The notion that schools A) prepare you for the world, or B) educate you, is absurd. Eight out of ten required classes have no practical applications, favoritism is used as a consideration in grading, some of the information is just plain wrong, and every effort is made to abolish creativity and intelligent thought.
I kinda got prepared for the world, and I got educated, too. I haven't had a teacher use favoritism (and if they did, it didn't affect me), most of the information did have merit, and to be quite honest, I got most of my creative ideas from school. neutral

I'm not tryin' to dog on you just to be difficult, but I find your argument horribly generalized, and not all that accurate. For the most part, schools, (even US public schools) do what they're designed to do, and that's expose you to a variety of subject matter (those eight out of ten classes you were talkin' about) and give you a taste of the real world. Of course, the degree and effectiveness depends on each individual school.

Hmm. Yes well, one of the downers of being in a tiny little Canadian private school is that you have to take things you find superfluos, and it leaves very little in terms of choice of courses. I find myself needing to take summer school for the next three years running to get in the credit I need.

Well all I can say is that I would seriously overhaul the required classes. For one thing, IMAO, there are three things that everyone should be taught; Manners, Home Ecconomics (not as an elective), and First Aid. These are survival skills, things that everyone should know.
