A small cluster of Empyreans- one a Sanguine, one a Choleric, and one a Phlegm- sat near the middle of the classroom. Antigone, Blayk, and Cashimer, all in a row, were taking notes easily as Tamerind spoke. War...? The Phelgm male thought, his brows furrowing in concern. What was with all this talk of war? Green eyes moved over to Antigone, and Blayk, who were also taking notes. The Sanguine shrugged her thing shoulders, and shook her head. "I don't get it either," she mouthed, unsure of whether or not Tamerind would be like the other teachers, and let the students converse. Blayk was of the mind that she would not, and kept her mouth shut, just to be on the safe side.

Tamerind nodded as Aysel spoke and gave Sombre a withering look before turning on her back hooves as if the small Melancholic had not spoken. "Correct!" Tamerind replied crisply, rolling her 'r's just a tad. "In Empyrean City we have Laws and many bylaws, as you undoubtedly remember from Professor Bardane's course." Tamerind adjusted her spectacles primly and turned back towards the student body. "Each of these Laws was made only after great consideration and debate. Each was considered crucial to the safety of the City and its Inhabitants. However," Tamerin spoke the word a little shrilly and paused to clear her throat. "Sometimes there arise times in which some Laws must be bent in order to ensure the wellbeing of the City. Now is one of those times." She nodded her head gravely, clasping her hands behind the small of her back where it fused with the centaurian body.

"But you may be asking, 'Professora Tamerind, if these laws are crucial to the survival of the inhabitants of the City, won't we be in danger should they be suspended?'" Tamerind let the question hang ominously over the class, her expression grave and steady. "The answer, unfortunately is: Yes. You will be at risk. Much will be demanded of you. Much more than what you are capable of will be expected of you. Every capable Three will have to rise to the task of fighting, and that leaves Shops unmanned, Classes untaught, supplies unmade. It is a dire time, make no mistake. In situations like this in the past, we have lost lives, sometimes many more than we like to recount... But as always the City has prevailed due to the hard work and dedication of its citizens. Now calls for nothing less."

Tamerind raised her voice high and the sound of it rang out over the auditorium. "We are living in a time of turning History, young ones! If we live through it, we will some day be able to tell our new Zeroes and Ones how we stood together and worked for the life of our neighbours and friends! We are the ones responsible for any future that may lie in the Balance!!"

The lithe Melancholy girl glanced up as the Professora started talking, and couldn't help but stare a little. She hadn't seen anyone quite like the elder woman, and Arwen's eyes soaked up her details and visage with intrigue. Delicate hands moved her quill and inkwell deftly, her neat and precise writing flowing over the parchment with ease to immortalize the words that the Professora imparted.

Ruby eyes shifted to Biwa as the pretty girl took a seat, a brief but genuine smile flitting over her features before two other students spoke out. She took a brief moment to glance over them, recognizing the dark skinned one from an earlier cass, before quickly returning to her notes. Arwen was a studious child, but she already felt that history was not going to be her strong point.

Elanin came in quietly, a bit late to class. She looked around, then spotted Biwa and--more importantly--an empty seat next to the Phlegmatic. Quickly, Elanin headed over there and sat next to her friend. "Hello, Biwa." She took out her notebook and started taking notes.

Biwa smiled shyly over at Arwen when she caught her welcoming smile. She looked at Arwen's handwriting, entranced by it, completely drifting away from the actual class at hand. That was, until Elanin sat down by her. Then she turned to look at the Choleric girl, smiling a little more surely.

She... had friends now. She really did!

"Hi," she murmured, softly, flushing a little before trying to pay attention the ominous, dark warning floating through the class. She shivered, sinking into her chair. Death...? Danger. She didn't want any of this. Why couldn't she have come to be in a time with no strife?

Elanin leaned over to Biwa, talking in a bit of a hushed tone. "Did I miss much?"

Biwa pointed to what little was written on her page:

State of War - Laws unstable
Dangerous now

Of course, the notes were ringed with doodles of feathers and eyes.

Antigone cringed just a bit when Barden's class was mentioned. She would need to talk to him soon, after catching up with her other classes... She knew that his class was crucial for her bid for Transcendence. Taking down notes, she focused on the words of the elderly History professor. Talk of war, states of suspended law... It all was very serious, and troubled the Sanguine greatly.

At that, Mat sat up straighter, suddenly looking interested. Sure, it would probably be dangerous or whatever but... that actually sounded exciting. Raising his hand after scribbling down a note or two, he asked, "So what can we do about it?" without really waiting to be called on.

Morrow glanced up as well at the mention of Laws being suspended and blinked. He'd missed Bardane's class, so he really didn't know what Laws they were talking about here, but still ...

Glancing over at Mat as the Sanguine spoke, Morrow rolled his eyes just slightly. He was going to get into trouble for just piping up like that.

At Tamerind's next words and Mat's question, Emrys slowly raised his head from his own notes, eyes a bit wide. Dangerous? He ... really didnt' like the sound of that. And Mat sounded way too excited about it too. The little Phlegm would rather just hide somewhere... if it was up to him.

User ImageJotting down the answer, Astaroth smiled slightly. A suspension of the laws would result in freer movement by all members of the city. Those who were capable of fighting would be diverted to those tasks while those left behind would tend to abandoned posts - it made sense and he approved. Glancing at Matt, the melancholy and replied, "One would think that we would prepare ourselves in any way we can, playing to our strengths." He glanced at Tamerind, "Which for now I would assume is completing our studies and working towards our desired positions in the city."

Tamerind squared her heels and ruffled her wings just a little as her gaze moved over the students to find the one who had spoken. Mathiaz.

"What can we do, young Mathiaz?" Tamerind repeated his question, in case the students at the back hadn't heard. "Well, to start, supplies need to be stocked, equipment maintained, provisions prepared and properly readied. There is an endless amount of work to be done by Empyreans and by their Hybrids, Cicus pets, Golems and the like. We must all work together." She paused as Astaroth but in his two cents and nodded. "As Astaroth has aptly surmised, the best thing the Zeroes can do in this situation is attend to their studies. Not only in the book-learning sense to better understand their world, and more swiftly transcend, but also in practise and perfection of skills and crafts which can be more immediately put to you."

Tamerind raised the volume of her voice yet further and made sure the echoes of it bounded about the walls. "If any of you has discovered an aptitude, a calling, an affinity with a section of or direction in this City, my advice to you is to explore these talents. To not humble yourselves by thinking you are only Zeroes. You are Empyreans! no matter how young or how small! You have been chosen because you had promising worth! Now is the time to unravel your own hearts and find out what lies in at the centre of your being."

There was a long pause, and then slowly Tamerind paced the length of the floor and returned to her spot at centre stage. "No then. It is time to learn where your City came from, and why we fight for it, body and soul..."

Ubel had bee silent throughout class, just watching and listening, gathering up notes as words were given to him. This was all so... disheartening, in a sense. It made him frown and feel sparks of worry and fires of wonder, why, what, how, who? What could they do, what would happen? He sighed shakily and stopped writing, giving himself a momentary break. But now something new was happening... To learn about where the City came from? This was something he was definitely interested in. What had Empyrean City started as? And why was he, why were all of them, chosen to live there?

Lior hadn't been able to write, as opposed to Ubel. He bit his bottom lip and listened intently to what all was told to them, shivering with each word. What more could they learn...? He was sure his head was going to pop with all of this information...

Antigone shivered, just a bit, at Tamerind's words. They rang so incredibly true with her. No matter what stage, Zero or Three, they were all Empyreans. They were all the chosen defenders this City... And now they were to learn their origins. With an excited wiggle of her bottom in the chair, she flipped to a fresh page in her notes, waiting for the Professora to start speaking again.

Cashimer reached over to Lior, touching the back of his hand lightly. "Are you alright?" he asked softly, concern in his voice and eyes, noticing the way his lover wasn't even bothering to take notes. Did he not feel well...? Or was the idea of war unsettling him so?

An affinity? He had a certain affinity for plants and perhaps even alchemy, were he to try it. Frowning slightly, Yambati wrote himself notes in the margins of where he would record what Tamerind would say. Notes of botany and looking more into the crafting of hybrids and harvesting of alchemical ingredients.. he could do all of those things. He knew he could! He had even started learning how.

Yes, he didn't fell all that useless, thinking of it like that. He would have to speak to Quenda the next chance he got, as well as show her the hybrid design that he had worked out.

--

An affinity? Biwa shrunk into her seat. She wasn't smart, wasn't attentive, wasn't strong. All she could do was sing and play music and paint. But... there were classes in art and music, weren't there? Though she hadn't had them... that meant that art and music had their place in the City. At the very least, she could provide relief from all the stress the others were going to.

And maybe she could apply herself just a little more. She sat up a little straighter, telling herself to be attentive and record her notes with more enthusiasm.

Astaroth sat up straighter in his chair as a pleased look settled into his features. He knew what he wanted to do, where his strengths lay. He was no physically strong but every time he'd come up against some new magical concept he'd learned quickly and efficiently. As he had been doing, Astaroth would delve into the magical arts and see where his interests took him.

-----

Daggart perked at Tamerind's stirring speech and his grin widened as images of adventure and glory flashed before his mind's eye. He wanted to be active... to stand between the monster and his weaker fellows. Daggart would be a warrior and protector. He could do his part like that, right? No being cooped up with your nose in a book or toiling away in the gardens.

He would do something. Maybe even craft... he rather enjoyed crafting. Making things that others could then use to speed up their work.
