Moody Octillery is credit to team.
When your evasiveness and Speed is randomly boosted to the point that an Excadrill can't even touch you, you're one lucky ducky.

Black Twooooooooooooooo Replaced my starter with a Vanillite egg right after I beat Cheren. (Literally the second i was able to.) BEST DECISION EVER The game immediately becomes incredibly difficult, because everything is out to get ice types and they aren't super useful for type advantages. Plus, the thing evolves at such late levels that everything else is constantly outperforming it to such a degree that it's almost useless by comparison. Which makes it even more rewarding when you beat things with it. biggrin

I need to go ahead and pick up White 2. Maybe Monday. I wish tomorrow, though.

Even on the TVTropes forums I hear others swapping out their starter for something else. Not me, though. My direction off the beaten path was choosing Tepig.

Too many weaknesses and no useful resistances.

Weaknesses don't mean s**t when you're one-shotting Garchomps. That's why most viable Ice-types are squishy and fast, imo.

I'm probably going to swap my starter for something else as well. It's actually something I've never done before, believe it or not.
Too bad I won't be able to get Black 2 for some time. I realize some people might be tired of hearing this, but seriously...I hate being broke.

Right, but you have to understand that the only things that Ice attacks are super useful for are things that are not used very often at all. I can count on my hands the number of Ground types that aren't also another type that's either resistant to Ice or super useful against it. And very few Ice types are actually fast enough to not be killed in two seconds. You're right about squishy, but most of them have 70 or less base speed. As an added bonus, I'm discovering that a whole bunch of them don't have anything more useful than Snow Veil or Ice Body for abilities. At least a Sandstorm team can get decent type coverage via Ground, Steel, and Rock (even if Rock benefits more from the extra Sp.Def).

Right, that's why you only see the ones with omgwtf2fast speed and a varied move pool used ever. Frosslass and Weavile come to mind. I haven't played the 5th gen, but I remember Weavile being my favorite pokemon ever throughout the 4th gen because he just laughs in the face of Garchomps, Gliscors, Salamences, Aerodactyls, etc. A lot of Flying types are incredibly problematic and incredibly fast - a STAB Ice Shard is basically a huge middle finger. They're far from the best type in the game, but they're definitely not the worst if you play them to their strengths. I think the Fire-type is overall less reliable - then again, I could be biased because I use a lot of water walls. Also, last gen I played Sandstorm teams were super OP. That makes it...not a very fair comparison to say the least.

The other biggest thing I have seen for the past two generations that made both Ice and Fire types unpopular was the prevalence of Stealth Rock and both types losing 25% of their health when they switch in. I do agree that Froslass and Weavile are really good because of their niches for being a super-annoying lead and being a superb revenge killer, respectively. If it wasn't for the fact that some of the most popular Pokemon to use right now have 4x Fire weaknesses (Ferrothorn, Scizor, Genesect, Forretress), Fire would probably see little to no use outside of maybe Heatran. Also, it's not just Sandstorm, weather teams in general are really dominant right now since they introduced Dream World Politoed and Ninetales to bring in permaweather. Hail teams aren't quite as common, but I've seen people getting caught unprepared while a Glaceon spams 100% accurate Blizzards and tears them apart. I think Gen 5 made rain more OP than sand, what with the combination of ridiculously hard-hitting Swift Swimmers, and the fact that Thundurus can spam 100% accurate Thunders and Hurricanes with consistent rain support.

I wouldn't know anything about the Dream World stuff. A lot of the new abilities look cool, but the new Pokemon games are just so slow - they drag on and on and on with their special effects and I fall asleep mid-battle. I don't know if I'll ever go past gen 4 unless they stop with the constant zooming in on absolutely everything you are doing oh my god this takes five times as long as it used to. Yeah, Rain Dance teams are ballin' as s**t too. I never see them, though. :C

Yeah, Rain Dance teams are ballin' as s**t too. I never see them, though. :C Rain Dance takes a turn to set up, though. Rain Teams use Politoed now because it got Drizzle from the Dream World, and Sun Teams use Ninetales because it got Drought as a Dream World ability. And honestly, I'm not focused enough to play Pokemon beyond a couple of Elite Four clears, though I might power through the World Tournament so I can put the whoopin' on a bunch of the old gym leaders, Elite Four members, and champions of other regions. If I wanna get my PvP on, Smogon recently switched to a browser-based simulator called Pokemon Showdown that's actually pretty nifty and doesn't require you to download stuff like Pokemon Online used to. They also keep the animations minimal to make battles go faster.
