The marching band at my high school has almost 300 members, but our sax section has only about 25, maybe 30 members. (including both alto and tenor, no bari since we don't need to march bari). 7 is how many you're supposed to have in concert band so we have 7 in our top band, 9 in our second, 10 or 11 in our third and as many as want to be in in our forth. We have 4 concert bands so in all, we're kinda big. sweatdrop

maruko-cadu I have problems when I play saxophone, I play an octive higher than i should, and everyone always says lossen up, what exactly do they mean by that? It means to loosen up your mouth. You're trying harder than you need to. First relax the rest of your body so you aren't stiff then loosen the muscles on the corners of your mouth and maybe drop your jaw down some so you aren't holding onto the mouthpiece for dear life. If you aren't sure which muscles I'm talking about try making a kissy face with you lips push down hard on the very corners of your mouth with your fingers toward your teeth. The muscles should tense up some. Those are the muscles you need to loosen.

Alto sax, have played it for going on five years....I'm the only person in my class who stuck with playing saxophone! crying There used to be four others in my class at my school, and they either just quit or switched instruments (Only one switched instruments)

You know whats depressing? In concert band when i got my part for a certain piece, and at the top it says "Baritone Saxophone (Optional)" The bari sax is much more than a tuba!

I play alto sax. Same horn for four years. I love Carl (my sax) and I also have problems with him. Or rather, the reed. Whenever I get a new reed, my horn sounds "airy" and doesn't play as easily as it should. I have to blow realy hard to get any sound out of it. And my octive key is messed up too. The low notes play higher than they should.

I've played Saxophone for about 6 years. Bari for 2 of those 6, alto for all 6, and tenor this year. I also played Soprano for a stint in jazz band.
Holy crap? That long already? sad I feel old.
Anyway, I love my horn and I wouldnt trade it for anything in the world.
I have a brand spankin' new Tenor Sax ^^ It has pretty floral designs on the bell. Selmer! Beats my old rusty Alto Sax.
Any marching advice for a tenor sax? I know to watch it when my knee goes up because I might just start bleeding from my mouth. Anything else?

you know wat kinda bugs me:
whenever my director or someone in the class hands out parts to music the people in front of me always get the 1st parts first. (im not last chair, but i am on the end of our sax row.((our directer divides us into parts, not chairs anymore because he thinks its degrading))) anyway, we have 5 peple in our section(not including tenor or bari) and 3 people are supposed to be on 2nd while two are on first. but the guys in my section always try to cheat and make it so that they all have first, while little ol me is playing second by myself!
^isnt that awful?

Sounds like you have people jealous of you wink
I'd take it as a compliment, people want your part.
But if it does happen enough tell the band director. Sure it sounds like snitching, but so is telling a mod something so there. razz

That really stinks...over here in Wayne Hills. We get parts according to age...and although I hate to brag, I'm as good as the section leader in our band. But I end up all the way at the end, playing 2nd part... Proud owner of a Selmer Super Balanced Action alto saxophone. Serial number 53006.

I switched to tenor in the concert season of my sophomore year from alto, and I've been playing it ever since, and I love it so much more.
Um, does anyone else play their reeds out WAAAY past the extent of their lifespan? Cuz, I kinda do. redface As in, that sucker's cracked halfway down with some chips at the end, but I still get a pretty good sound out.
...LOL...
