This sort of talk about a potential crime made Monique feel not like she was in the nurse's office of Paldea's most prestigious educational institution but huddled with her deputies in her crowded office with its overflowing pre-Dome filing cabinets, or even when Sheriff Gardenia was alive.
Team Star, on its surface, was a loosely shaped but tight-knit outfit of students, a ragtag series of points of light molded into a constellation by gravity and a shared distaste for the Academy and its traditional flavor. But every word of their conversation revealed a criminal mastermind with resources far beyond its own. This Star clearly orbited another.
Monique had heard of Ein, of course, even though she wasn't exactly around when Snagem imprisoned him. That said, by the middle of the 21st century, he was less "living memory" and more "history books". Nonetheless, the sophistication of the plot that Star was carrying out for itself or for someone else—and her lack of knowledge of this region—were apparent. Tsuki was slinging around the names of Paldean Pokémon that she hadn't even heard of yet. That was going to have to change if she was going to keep studying here.
What concerned her even more was the mention of a fairy circle. She had been around Fairy-type Pokémon and things before, but it had never caused her entire mind to play a trick on her. Was that why her allergic reaction was so acute, to the point it unnerved Miriam? That was something she was going to have to research. "My mind was messed with, and I'm a Dark-type," she reminded the group. "Obviously, my cause is different, but..."
But for now, once she got out of here, she wanted to rest, and not just in her dorm room. She wanted to get back to Mt. Silver for a day or two, regroup, and maybe settle down to being an actual student and not just the unelected Sheriff of Uva-Naranja.

"Er... what Sub said. After I found Tristen, he asked me to keep a watch on the Star member and Pokemon that were knocked out and left to join the others outside. After a while, the energy just... vanished before I stopped sensing him nearby at all. That must've been when Sub sent him back," Cera explained, grateful for the hole in what she knew being sorted out.
When she heard Reno, she'd be quick to come closeby. "Take me back, I need to know more of what's going on with Team Star and I'll just be in the way if I go back to HQ now."
"At this point... I suppose the same's in order. Give Doc the time he needs to deal with Tristen and Aden. I'll do what I can back at the Academy for now," Sol remarked. "Sub, if it's not much trouble, I'll join you in those talks soon, once things are sorted otherwise."
---
Once the two were back at the Academy, Cera would follow Reno pretty closely the whole time, finding herself back in the Nurse's offiice before long. Realizing there were far more than just Team Star seemingly affected by the mushrooms made her feel a pit in her stomach, hardly knowing anything offhand for what was being talked about. It was similar for Aile's remarks about the fairy circle; she'd reason Aden must know more to them if he'd traveled through one in the first place, but asking him wasn't going to happen any time soon.
Sol had likewise followed Reno and the others into the office himself, and though lacked any answers for Aile too, he'd fare better on the more general knowledge. "What Tsuki said, if you're narrowing it to Paldean options. As for the Nincada... Aile, you've still got that on you, right? I remember you sending a message about it when we were dealing with the titan Klawf."
"They... might?" Cera finally remarked, looking towards Aile. "I don't know anything about fairy circles, let alone tochu...kaso... the weird mushrooms on Paras."

"Hm? Oh, it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, senorita Monique." Arturo said in response to Monique, giving her a little bow of respect and a flirty smile. The man would listen to everyone, their input and own theorizing and began to consider all the information in silence. Nurse Miriam however had to get back to work as one of the students began to stir and groan, as if uncomfortable. That wasn't unusual, they occasionally did that, she compared it to like having a nightmare.
"Your friends are correct on the Pokemon native to Paldea, if your theorizing is on the right track it would likely be one of the ones listed." Arturo said to Reno after listening to Tsuki and others. "As for this Fairy Circle you speak of I only have a rudimentary knowledge of such things but I can make an educated guess considering how vastly different the two fungi are. If they are related then we must be dealing with a Grass Channeler, if not then it's a Bug Channeler. If we can unearth the source of the Fairy Circle it will confirm for us which direction to be looking in." He explained for a moment before giving it a second thought. "Or worse yet a pair of Channelers."
"You're going to need iron supplements for the foreseeable future, dear." Nurse Miriam said to Monique as she walked back and forth. "Something triggered your allergy and I doubt it will abate any time soon. May even be life long." She explained to the Zoroark hybrid.
Arturo would perk up as he noticed Wren's fingers shimmered. Cocking an eyebrow he stepped up closer to the student Wren was in front of and reached for the mushroom himself and despite his finger just an inch away, closer than Wren got, there was no shimmer. "Interesting." He said, looking to Wren and smiling. "You caught a Shiinotic not long ago, correct? I seem to remember you telling me about it. I have a feeling it may be calling to you. Release your friend for me, mi hermoso nino." He requested, the Grass Channeler having a theory to test.
"This Nincada sounds intriguing though, I would think it isn't irrelevant to the issue at hand." He said as he looked to Aile.

Aile shrunk slightly when the attention was put on her, though she did nod slightly. "I... Yeah, I still have it. I've only brought it out once we were back in the academy, though, and only to feed it a leaf from the Herba Mystica we found. I wasn't planning on bringing it out during this, I promise!" Aile could feel her hands shaking- well, her one flesh and blood hand, at least, so she would instead shove both of her hands into her pockets, trying to bring her nerves back down. She probably wasn't going to be ostracized because she had it with her, logically. But, she wasn't in a completely normal state of mind.

Reno would nod along as Tsuki began to list off Pokemon, quietly filing away the two less relevant ones before making sure to give himself a note to do more research on the Rellor line. I mean, another relevant Psychic type to add to the list of potentials expanded his options for what he could use to identify Mister Mushroom but also rendered the potential value of those Pokemon down due to simple dilution of the pool of interest. At this point, the only definitive thing would be a Parasect and one of three Pokemon lines across two types. He needed something new to cut down the noise in this dataset and a Shadow Nincada that happened to pop up during the Herba hunt that some of them had been undergoing under Mrs. Raifort's direction was.....PRECISELY what he needed!
Snapping his gaze to the currently mushroomed Raifort, he would run through the potentials. She had been controlled and planted the Nincada on Aile. But at what time and for what purpose? Until the big play by Team Star and having gotten to know some of these people, her being infected and collecting these mythical plants for Mister Mushroom wouldn't have even been a blip on the radar to disguise. So most likely, the Herba play had been a coincidence of timing and the Nincada was there earlier. But when? The only time her artifact had ever left her sight had been way back during that incident with the Shadow Kricketune, but that had been a Shadow Pokemon. So even if that been when, it was entirely reliant on a Pokemon that only operated on instinct and whims to somehow dictate itself exactly how you wanted. And it also required the Nincada to do similar, come to think of it. But how would you do it? Commands would be unreliable at best and even if they were channeling partners pre-virus, it would render that connection moot once they were infected.
So it had to be indirect, able to last for a long time, and manage to control someone in such a way to make it feel like it was a natural thought pattern for them no matter their state. Now why did such specific parameters, involving Bugs, sound so familiar?
So Mister Mushroom had been around a lot longer than just this trip to Paldea, if this train of thought was correct. And he either had to have the proximity or knowledge to know when to wake up the thing for the Herba stuff, or have it somehow set up to react to any major energy sources. Except, despite being in the same area before, the Nincada only activated on the second trip, once Raifort and some of the school knew that the Herba was likely to exist.
As long as none of this was just rampant undue correlation of completely separate events, Reno felt very confident that Mister Mushroom was a Bug Channeler of some variety based off his selection of agents and abilities used. "Aile, I don't want to alarm you but we might need to get that Nincada examined for fungal infection." Reno told the woman, "I think our current mycelium infection and what its done explains how a Shadow Pokemon would only go Shadow after it had managed to do something specific."

"Two channelers possibly, excelente." Exasperation was evident in Sol's words, painted heavily by the stress of what happened only moments prior. "We can lead you to the basement where we found the circle, though I feel Aile would be more effective in any unearthing... that said, if I'm remembering certain details from your message about that Nincada, having them checked out won't hurt."
As soon as Cera started hearing words about a Shadow Pokemon being sent out, she'd get a Vivid Scent put into the Immunizer of her Snag Machine and let it go to work. "If you're sending that out, let me do this first. The last thing we need is the Shadow Virus spreading because of us. That scent should last long enough for our needs."
"Good thinking, I was about to add about having an Immunizer among us first. Or at least recalling as many Pokemon as possible to limit the spread. You should be safe to send them out now, Aile."

Wren was distracted for the moment as he stared at his hand, wondering just what he was reacting to, but when Arturo asked about his Shiinotic, he nodded absently and looked to his waist at the only Ball there that wasn't of the Nest variety. Grabbing the Heavy Ball he'd used on Shiinotic, he held it out in front of him and popped it open. "Destro, come on out."
As the Illuminating Pokemon materialized, he stretched out his arms and yawned before giving a vigorous shake. "Watch the spores, Destro." Wren warned, Pulling branch-like object covered in flowering plants from his hip and holding it in the cloud of spores the mushroom Pokemon had unintentionally released. The flytrap on top of the thing began to open and shut, the spore cloud rapidly shrinking as the plant "consumed" the spores.
"That's better." Wren decided, hanging the branch back on his hip for the moment. "Any particular reason you wanted Destro out?" He asked Arturo as he began to consider what they might be able to use here. "Have you considered non-medicinal antifungals? They're generally not the safest things to use around people or Pokemon but if nothing else has worked, the only options left are to consider the least harmful landscaping grade treatments and try treating from the outside first or-" He paused, looking back at Arturo for a moment. "Or Channeling." He realized.
Looking down at Destro for a split second before casting his look back to the commune leader, he gave the man a curious look. "You think I can do something about this?" He wondered aloud, wondering just what Arturo thought he could do here.

At this point, it was taking everything Aile had to not just break down in a panic attack. First, she tripped into the worst trap ever, one that she could not have foreseen pretty much ever, and wound up becoming a toy for the Ziton to manipulate, stabbing Aden multiple times in the process. Now, it might be that even by stepping foot into Paldea may have started up this whole process, or at least deciding to join the group going after the Herba Mysticas. She was just hitting it out of the park, wasn’t she? Great performance Aile, ten out of ten. That is, at least, if they were talking about bringing misfortune to a group of people. Arceus, what else was she going to trip into and cause?
Aile turned to look at Tatooine, who nodded at her. With a long sigh, she’d take her right hand out and grab the Nincada’s Pokéball. “I-It can be an active little thing, just so you know.” Another look was given to Tati, who moved in behind her as she entered the room, standing in front of the doorway now. And with a hand that was shaking like she was in an Earthquake, she’d press the button, now anticipating something else bad to happen because of this. “Come on out, you harbinger of chaos,” she muttered, eyes narrowing.

"Feeding the...Herba Mystica? That's...that's real!?" Arturo almost shouted in surprise at Aile's comments, his cool and calm composure cracking slightly in that moment. "I-I thought they were long since extinct at best. I can't believe you found them. You'll have to tell me more about them later, for now we have more pressing matters than my curiosity." He continued. At Aile's comments Arturo was quick to release his own Pokemon first, a strange little bundle of thorns that seemed to float just off the ground. If anyone recognized it they would know its name to be Brambleghast.
As soon as the Shadow Nincada appeared it would instantly go on the attack, lunging out of the ball but Arturo was quicker and more prepared as with a wave of his hand his Brambleghast 'unraveled' into a single thorny vine-like form that quickly snatched up the Shadow Nincada, wrapped around it, and then reestablished its original Brambleghast form which now served a cage for the Shadow Nincada. The bug would attempt to slip out only for some sort of barrier to flash into existence with a shimmer causing the bug to bounce off it. It wasn't escaping the Brambleghast's confines.
"Do not fret miss, no harm will come to you or any others." He said with a smile at Aile, trying to reassure her. He'd then look to Wren and motion for him to come over. "Your friend-" Meaning Reno. "-is correct, this little monster might have a connection to this mystery and I believe using it as the test subject first would be beneficial. With it ensnared in my Pokemon you should be able to draw from our own bond and feel the spores inside it, should there be any, more easily and figure out what you're looking for before you work on the students." He explained to Wren.
"Oh, I didn't say what I expect of you, did I? Yes, I think you can do something about this, all of this. Call it a hunch or drawing on my experience but I feel like your Channeling bond will allow you to touch the spores inside all of them, to grip them even, and draw them out." Arturo explained. "I've seen an ability similar once before, you know." He said, commanding his Brambleghast to float closer to Wren, carrying the Shadow Nincada inside of it. Thankfully they were in the limits of Cera's Immunizer. "Shiinotic will help you, won't you my friend?" He said, smiling at the mushroom Pokemon.

Wren watched as Arturo and his partner ensnared the Shadow Nincada Aile had released, instantly trying to attack. “That reminds me a bit of a technique Odd employs… Is that Pokemon a Ghost-type, by any chance?” He asked Arturo, recognizing its ability being similar to Odd’s Guardian Halo. He was wary of the Nincada as it thrashed about, but was more impressed by Arturo and his Pokemon’s ability to resist its attacks, listening to the man’s explanation of what he wanted. “I have a feeling I know what you’re talking about. I got a strange feeling in my fingers when I tried to touch that mushroom a moment ago, right before they started glowing. Like touching a soft fabric, almost?” He replied, trying to find the words to describe what he felt.
As Nincada thrashed, he looked down to Destro and gave the Iluminating Pokemon a smile. “I’m sure he will. We haven’t done much together yet but I’m sure we’ll be excellent partners.” Destro nodded and gave a somewhat excited shake, releasing a cloud of spores once again. These ones were different than the last, however, moving toward Nincada but seemingly not carrying any kind of effects of their own. As they settled over the Pokemon, Wren reached toward it, finding that feeling coming back that he’d felt before. It did feel like a soft fabric waiting for him to lay his hands on it. His fingers began to shimmer as he reached for the fabric and as he took hold, pulling his hand away, several thin threads would pull away from Nincada.
“Uh… I think… this is it.” Wren muttered, reaching out with his other hand and beginning to pull the threads hand over fist. “I think I know a faster way to do this…” Grabbing a Nest Ball from his belt, he released a Pokemon that hadn’t been seen since Kartana had unintentionally whisked several of the Snagems through Ultra Space. “Ginseng, hold this and use Gyro Ball in place.” He directed the Hisuian Voltorb, handing them the end of the bundle of threads. Ginseng nodded with their full body and took the bundle of threads in their mouth before beginning to spin in place, picking up speed as they went. Wren’s fingers continued to shimmer as he held the threads, pulling with one hand and carefully spinning the bundle as it was drawn toward Ginseng. Arturo would be able to tell what he was doing immediately, most likely, spinning the mycelium into a strange thread, unlike any other. It would take several long moments to complete the task but by the time it was done, Wren had managed to extract all of the mycelium and foreign spores that had infested the Bug-type and had enough thread to make a small bobbin out of it. “That… was interesting.” He said to himself, wiping a bit of sweat from his brow with the back of his hand as he pet Ginseng’s head with the other. “Great job. Both of you.” He praised his Pokemon.
It took him a moment to rest before he was ready to try again. “I’m pretty sure I can do that to everyone that’s affected, it just might take some time.” He asserted, walking to the first of the students and seeing how he reacted to them. Reaching toward the mushroom sprouting from them, he’d find his fingers shimmering just as they had before. “Destro… Try using those spores again.” He instructed the Shiinotic. The mushroom Pokemon waddled over to the bedside and gave a violent shake, releasing a cloud of spores just as he had before. As the spores settled over the student, Wren found the feeling of soft fabric under his touch once again. He could remove the spores but only after Destro applied a coating of his own, it seemed. Was that a feature of his channeling or just a strange bug in the channeling of whoever had done this in the first place? It didn’t matter, really, he realized as he closed his fingers and pulled, the infested student groaning quietly as Wren pulled the spores within them into the same silvery threads as he had with Nincada. “Ginseng, you ready to use Gyro Ball again?” He asked the Voltorb at his feet. “Volt!” Ginseng replied, quickly hopping up and grabbing the bundle of threads in Wren’s hands, beginning to whirl around in place with Gyro Ball the moment they hit the ground once again. As Ginseng spun, the threads gathered around them and Wren continued to twist the bundle between his fingers. With every second that passed, the infested student’s groaning lessened.
It would take a while but with each person he worked on, he would show improving skill and speed at the process, learning as he went how to focus more energy into refining the thread and how to use his energy to pull more of the spores at once, but each and every one had to begin with a cloud of spores from Destro. By the time he had reached the last of the infested several long and tedious hours later, he was taking around a minute for each person and had collected several large spools worth of thread. It had taken nearly 20 minutes for the first person so this was a massive improvement in a short amount of time. “I think that’s everyone?” He questioned as he looked over the nurse’s room, the various students and faculty beginning to stir after his efforts at extracting the fungal infection. He just hoped he’d gotten it all. This was a very new experience for him and that fabric-like feeling under his fingers was what told him there was something there that he could grab. It wasn’t like a direct sensing of the individual particles he was sure a more skilled channeler could possibly have but, perhaps, it was enough to save these people from whatever had happened.

Tsuki nodded along as Reno, Sol, and Cera pieced together who they were potentially dealing with. The prospect of it being a duo wasn’t out of the question but if Arturo was right then they had a surefire way to narrow down their analysis of this person. He perked up at hearing it was Aile who had caught the Shadow Pokemon, interested in seeing one for the first time. Even in the chaos of his time with the team before, he had never encountered one. Though, hearing about bringing the Nincada out right then and there, Tsuki decided to return the Magby on his shoulder back to her Pokeball. Immunizer or no, he was NOT taking any risks. Not with Maggie.
All of the channeling talk made Tsuki want to look into learning about that himself. If one or two channelers were able to make this kind of puzzle for them, it’d take something in that realm to be able to solve it. “So, are you guys all channelers?” He asked, looking around. Clearly Sol and Cera weren’t, but Reno, Arturo, Wren and Aile? Yeah, he really needed to look into that. Grampa Takashi’s ‘Boy’s Only Training Camp’ once again reared its ugly head in his mind.
“Hey, you’re good Aile!” Tsuki said, hesitating to pat her on the back before deciding to do that to try and comfort the stressed looking lady. “Somebody needed to keep that critter from hurting people and feeding it the Herba Mystica was… uh. Did you notice any changes in it after it ate them?” That was an interesting if potentially dangerous experiment. On one hand, the plants were supposed to be good for bodily health so maybe it could help with the purifying process. On the other? Titan Shadow Nicada. Well, as long as that didn’t actually happen…. “Besides, how bad can it b- oH CRAP!” Tsuki jumped back when the Shadow Nincada immediately leapt to attack the people surrounding it, having a sigh of relief when Arturo handled it quickly.
Yeah, maybe not meeting Shadow Pokemon was the right idea. That was one downright hateful little Bug type Pokemon. Tsuki glanced at Cera, one question nagging at him that he thought if anyone could answer from experience it’d be her. Even if they couldn’t be understood, he knew that Pokemon were as intelligent as people (even moreso, depending on the people). What was the Nincada thinking, he wondered.
But Wren’s channeling was eye catching enough to divert his attention back to it. With just a, granted unknown Pokemon that Tsuki was SO curious about, Pokemon he could draw out the spores of the affected victims. Even after twenty minutes, it was clear that he hadn’t peeled his eyes away from the demonstration.

Monique had hardly expected to become a spectator in the middle of the most unlikely of venues to a Pokémon encounter, especially with a Shadow Pokémon. But that's what happened as she tucked the prescription for iron supplements—looks like a visit to Doc Owl, she thought—into her bra.
It was a fascinating experience and one that was at times fur-raising, given the encounters she had had with Shadows (a certain Starmie came back to mind). Though a recent hybrid, she was not versed in what made Channelers tick, and watching them work was as educational as any class at Uva-Naranja.
Monique dedicated herself to helping the newly de-mushroomed Trainers wake up and get oriented while Wren and Arturo brought around the traveling Nincada-and-whatever that other Pokémon was show. Will we ever get Paldean Pokémon in the Pokédex? she thought to herself. Seeing what it took to remove the fungus, she felt lucky not to have been infected herself. That allergy, though, was going to take some careful managing on her part.

Aile looked at everyone trying to reassure her, personally thankful that Arturo took action immediately with the Nincada. Tatooine was out in case things went completely Aspear shaped, since she was purified, but thankfully, that wasn’t needed, thanks to Cera. She jumped when Tsuki gave her a pat on the back, doing her best to keep herself from just breaking out into an ugly cry. Instead, she would bring her left arm up, using the sleeve to cover her eyes, which would give Tsuki, and anyone else there, time to notice that she finally had a left arm again, if anyone was there that didn’t know that. Also that said hand on her arm was nowhere near the same color as her normal skin, pretty much spelling out that yes, Aile at least was a channeller.
“I… Appreciate it.” Moving her hand, she pinched the bridge of her nose, taking another deep breath. “It’s been one hell of a day,” she stated quietly. Aile would then patiently watch as Wren worked his particular type of Pokemagic, getting the infection out of the Nincada first. The fact that it was there at all made her heart sink, once again feeling responsible for this debacle getting started. Once Wren finished with his work on the Pokémon, she would quickly recall the insect, letting out a long sigh. “To answer your questions, sort of… Nincada actually started off incredibly small. I didn’t even realize what I was chasing until it popped out and ate a leaf from the first Herba. Then it grew into normal size. I was able to give it a leaf from the other two Herbas, and maybe it got more aggressive. Maybe. I’m not one hundred percent sure.” She sighed again as she stared at the Pokeball. If she remembered correctly, there was one more Herba people had found and she’d like to get one of the leaves from that one… Where was that last one, though? She’d like to find that one as well. Thinking about it now, it was slightly annoying her that they couldn’t find that last one.
As she thought about the Herbas, that seemed to be a decent enough distraction that she looked like she was calming down. She drummed her fingers on the ball, tilting her head. “Uh… Anyone know who went to find that fourth Herba? I wouldn’t mind asking if someone kept some of it.”

Sol and Cera barely jumped, keeping themselves ready as Aile's Nincada tried to attack, both of them easing up once Arturo's Brambleghast managed to confine them. And, thanks to the Immunizer, there was no fear of the virus spreading for now.
"I'm obviously not," Sol replied to Tsuki after his question. "A hybrid can't be, at least not in the same way as proper channelers. Even wielding an artifact's dangerous for us, since in lieu of the link between channeler and Pokemon, the artifact will draw from the hybrid using it. It's an easy, fast way to deplete your very life force if one isn't very careful, even with the sort of power it can grant." As he spoke, it might be noticed that his eyes shifted to his left, his sword sheathed since he hadn't had the chance to put it away.
"What he said... in that I'm not one either. I don't think a Pokemon can even channel with another Pokemon." Cera added, watching as Wren channeled with his Shiinotic, curious if what Arturo suggested would work.

After Wren extracted the fungus from the Shadow Nincada the bug type would appear briefly confused, stopping its thrashing for a few seconds, as if disoriented. However once it remembered its was still contained it would begin to resume its wild thrashing, it was still a Shadow Pokemon after. "You can recall your Pokemon now, chica." Arturo said to Aile and once she did he too would recall his Pokemon. "So that confirms one thing, that whoever is responsible for for infecting the students is likely the same person that infected your Nincada, for some reason or another. Look, the fungus is identical to the rest Wren is pulling out." Arturo said, turning attention to the novice Grass Channeler.
Arturo would watch as Wren went around removing the fungus from the students, each one proving to be easier than the next as he and Shiinotic got a handle on how to go about the procedure. One by one the students sat up straight and looked around confused. Matteo was one noteworthy to snap up as he looked around ready to fight, embers flickering from his nostrils before he realized where he was and there was no fight to be had. "W-where is he...?" He gently growled.
Then there was Ms. Raifort who sat up more slowly and let out a sigh, as if she wasn't surprised by this but instead just relieved it was over. When she spoke her words would confirm this. "It's finally over...what a strange sensation." She said aloud to no one in particular.
"I believe Beau has the Spicy Herba Mystica in his possession. If you can track down the explosive mad man you might be able to get a piece off of him." GRAY responded to Aile through her SNAG.
