Children Of The Flame

Gion shook his head slowly.

I'm sure that if we went back enough in history, the elves are equally to blame, he assured Daemon. I mean, look at the way things are today ... the land is three countries of elves, one country of humans, and a small spattering of dwarfs. Doesn't that say anything?

He stepped up onto the porch and let himself into the house.

True, but it's no excuse for them to act just as poorly.

Daemon replied back.

Every race, every nation has a history that they are not proud of. We are... not all knowing, we will always make mistakes and as a group we just tend to make bigger mistakes.

Ulrich was surprised to hear someone come into the house: it was still midsummer, and far from the time when Gion would be coming to stay for the winter. So he was wary when he left the kitchen to see who it was exactly who had entered.

As surprised as he was to hear someone come in, he was even more surprised to see that it was indeed Gion.

"Gion," he said in a very surprised tone. "What a surprise! What brings you here at this time of year? Passing through?"

Gion nodded, then brought his hands up to sign, Heading south for a while, thought I'd say hello, stock up on food, and see if Mother was around ... I know she normally is around this time of year. It's the time of year for Daeron's visit, isn't it?

Inwardly, he was chuckling. Always good to know I can still surprise people, he thought to Daemon.

You make it sound like you've run out of tricks.

Daemon replied back colouring his thoughts as if he were grinning if he could. He had learnt better in expressing himself like this.

Ulrich nodded, looking at Gion warily, knowing that he was probably sharing a joke with Daemon at Ulrich's expense.

"Food, we can get you," he nodded. "But Daeron's visit has come and gone ... it was just a few weeks ago, actually. As for Serenity ... sorry ... she's ..."

He coughed a bit.

"... disappeared."

Just then, Ulani popped her head out of the kitchen to see what they were talking about.

Gion could have swore his heart stopped for a minute upon hearing Ulrich's words - and it was obvious that his breathing did. His mind ran through endless possibilities of what might have happened, and his fingers flickered frantically as he demanded of Ulrich, What happened to her? Where did she go? When did she disappear?

His heart was racing now, panicking as he had never panicked before. Had the humans finally caught up to her? If so, how could they have overpowered her?

Gion calm down.
Daemon tried to make his friend feel better, but it was hard when he was thrown for a loop. People don't just disappear like that after all, and he knew it.

Ulrich nodded, shrugged. "Sorry, Gion ... I mean, one day she was here, and the next ... poof! Just disappeared, right into thin air ..."

He did his best to appear worried, but wasn't quite sure how well it was working.

Easy for you to say, Gion retorted silently to Daemon. It's not your mother, and who knows what might have happened to her!

He looked up at Ulrich, a determined expression on his face. Tell me where she disappeared, he signed seriously. I'll see if I can find her, find out if she's okay.

Well yes... but it isn't going help matters if you panick.

Daemon tried to point out, and yet he couldn't help feel that there was something really fishy about this.

A look of anger crossed Ulani's face, and she reached out and hit Ulrich upside the head - hard.

"You are absolutely horrible!" she lectured him. "Don't torture him like that!" She turned to Gion and crossed her arms (Ulrich was rubbing the back of his head and looking rather sheepish).

"Your mother was here and left through a portal to go visit Elnara and the Winters family," she said shortly. "So to be technical, yes, she disappeared into thin air - but we do know where she went."

She shot Ulrich the look. "She's hoping to be back by next year before Daeron comes to visit again, and she's fine."

At that moment, Gion went through a myriad of emotions. Confusion, anger, relief, and again - anger.

If he had a voice, he would have been using it at that moment. As it was, he did his best to keep his hands steady as he signed, Thank you, Ulani.

And then it sank it. She was visiting ... Elnara. His eyes grew bright, and he signed, more eagerly now, Does that mean someone from there came here? You've had word about how she is? How is she? Who was here? What's happened? What's been going on?

Daemon groaned at that.

That was a horrible joke, though I'm interested to hear about this. Gaia right? Is where she went.

There was slight hope in that, even though it had been so long since he had be here it would be interesting to hear about the world he left behind.

Ulani snapped her fingers suddenly. "That reminds me," she laughed. "Daemon - the name Kara Winters mean anything to you? Donovan Lau?"

The expression on her face was one of pure enjoyment. Not the teasing kind, but the kind that said she was about to tell someone the best news they could ever hear.
