Sacrifice all that you speak.Jordan opened his mouth to try asking Ferros a question, but though he could breathe, his voice had simply stopped working. His mouth had forgotten the shape of language. He stood for a moment, pushing down a rising tide of fury at being controlled like this. Then he began to climb again. Ferros followed more calmly. He was more accustomed to being unable to speak. He wished he could hear his human's thoughts; Jordan was obviously upset, and Ferros wanted to comfort him, soothe away the jagged edges of distress. There were other figures moving up the stairs, but he recognized none of them; they seemed shadowy, indistinct. It reminded Jordan that this was a dream. None of it was real. He wanted to shout, scream, anything to relieve the endless silence and the monotony of the stairs. He jumped violently when Ferros's hand settled on his back, between his shoulderblades. When he looked back, the weapon was looking down at him, worried, sympathetic. Always taking care of me, he thought. Even like this.He couldn't say thank you, but he nodded and kept plodding onwards up the stairs. He jumped again when the Voice decided to make its presence known once more. Playing God, a*****e? he thought at it, and looked up towards the indistinct ceiling to raise his middle finger at it. Whisper took in a deep breath, wish that the goal was to get down the stairs instead of up. She was pretty good at getting down them, even if they were rickety and dangerous. Unfortunately it wouldn't e much of a tower if it just went deep into the ground. Climbing became harder as they made their way upwards, like a slow, dragging weight added to their every step. Jordan watched his feet, stubbornly climbing, step after soundless step. Moving upwards was beginning to hurt, a heavy, creaking ache in all his joints. Jordan held the railing and grimly kept going. They could rest after this. After it was all over. She could feel it. She was close. So close. Perseverance was the most important thing for her right now. Whisper just kept repeating positive things in her mind, trying her best to not let her exhaustion take over. When the voice spoke again, it sounded as fed up as she was. It didn't matter if she knew everything there ever was to know, she wasn't giving up. Clearly it was hiding something fairly big and she needed to know what it was. She'd come too far not to. What are you so afraid of?Ferros paused with his foot on the next step, his heart aching with longing. It was a lie, he reminded himself. This wasn't real. It couldn't give him anything. The Voice didn't respond. It had never really responded. Maybe it was just sending blindly, hoping to discourage him. Jordan dragged himself onwards. Reach the end. Find Harrison. This would be over soon, and they could go home. Each step was so hard to take, and every one she successfully took was a miracle to her. In all honesty how anyone was doing this was pretty miraculous. One by one, that was the only way to do it. It was painfully difficult to continue, but they had come so far, and they had so much to lose. Jordan looked up along the twisting line of the stairs. They had to be close to the top. And then the archway loomed suddenly in front of them. Jordan looked back to Ferros, meeting his eyes, and was startled by what he saw there: sorrow, a strange reluctance half-hidden beneath patient determination. He reached out to the weapon, worried. Ferros hugged him briefly, then let go and shook his head, giving him a tiny, rueful smile. Jordan looked up at Ferros a moment more. He couldn't ask, and Ferros couldn't tell him.
