Mathias gave William a sidelong look, feeling a bit apprehensive. He had dealt with the lower born before when his father was teaching him to solve disputes and such among his charges, but this would be the first time that Mathias would be completely the one in charge on proceedings.
Hiding his feelings with a grin, he nudged his horse forward towards the town. The townsfolk saw them coming from a ways off, but most kept on about their business. A sheperd boy tended a flock pf sheep nearby, goodwives were hanging out the wash of the day or beating carpets. Husbands could be seen going about their chores or making minor repairs to their homes. Mathias was glad they weren't making too large a stir, and was equally glad that a small delegation gathered to recieve them. The man that seemed to be in charge was a balding, slightly overweight fellow that stepped forward as Mathias and his compatriots drew closer.
"Welcome! Be welcome my lords! We knew the Citadel would send someone soon. I am Mayor Delven as it please my lords," he said with a smile and dry washing his hands. Mathias smiled in greeting in return and dimounted his horse.
"Well met sir," he said," I am Mathias. This is Kiro and William, my fellow Hunters. We understand that you have something that needs looking into... a cave of some sort?"
At the mention of the cave, the mayor paled visibly and sweat beaded on his forehead. "Best if we talk about that more privately my lord. My house is just over yon, and we'll have some of the boys take care of your horses."
Mathias nodded, and a short time later he and his friends were seated with the mayor in his home with cups of hot tea to wash the travel dust from their throats. The mayor sipped his tea and grimaced, though not at the taste,"Aye, that thrice damned cave. Uther's Deep we call it... it's an old story around these parts. Some call it fancy, though most call it true and a cursed place. It's long in the telling so I won't bore you. Just understand that it's not the sort of place upstanding folk frequent. The long and short of it, we've been seeing lights shining in the cave and strange sounds that don't sound like animals we have around these parts. My....my son Bronson went in to see if we had bandits moving in, or just some stray mountain lion or some such. Only when he went in, the lights shone brighter, the sounds got louder and....he never came back."
The mayors hand shook a little as he finished his tale, and he set down his cup before he could spill. Mathias sipped his own tea politely during the telling, and listened attentively until the mayor quieted. After a moment he looked to his friends and asked quietly," Thoughts?"

"Sounds to me like it could be a spirit-type fiend. Or maybe even just the spirit of a fiend. In their own way a dead fiend can be more dangerous than a live one. Either way, if it's some form of spirit we're dealing with here I'm going to have to prepare some seals and elixirs for our blades." William said as he set his teacup aside and set his pack in front of him.
William began to withdraw several small phials and sturdy metal canister along with his usual parchment inks and brushes. William opened the canister, which contained a clear oil and poured a small amount into three of the phials. He then tucked the phials into an inside pocket of his jacket. He also poured some ink into a phial and stoppered it before placing it, a brush, and several sheets of folded parchment into a pocket of his jacket as well. He then replaced all of the original items back into his pack.
"Mathias, have you had any experience fighting incorporeal fiends? Or fiend spirits, which are basically the same thing?" William asked.

Mathias could only shake his head," No, we always had a member that could seal the fiend we batteled immediately after death, and before now I was not handed any missions like this..."

Kiro sighed at the news of what foe they might have to deal with. "William knows I'm not very good with those types of enemies. As long as they're physically there, I can kill it. But when it comes to spirits, its a different type of disposing of..." Kiro trailed off as he found himself a place to sit.

"Well the hardest part is that if it's a spirit-type fiend then it's actually alive and we'll have to kill it before it becomes a fiend spirit and we can seal it. Confusing, I know. If that's the case then our weapons will have no effect on it unless we treat them with special liquids first. We'll prepare in case of that situation and otherwise proceed as normal." William said. "Mathias," He said and gestured for the young Hunter to continue leading their group for the time being.

Mathias listened to both Kiro and William, then nodded thoughtfully,"Alright then. William, I'm assuming you know how to prepare our weapons for a possible spirit fiend. Please get it ready for us. As soon as we can, we'll head to this Uther's Deep and see what we can find."
The mayor just nodded his head and sipped his tea, hands still shaking slightly," You boys be careful in there. No telling what might be lurking in there... if my son is still alive..." Mathias forestalled the man with sympathy in his eyes," We'll bring him out if we can."

Kiro unsheathed his katana and handed them to William for him to prepare. "I feel like we've been doing this for ages." Kiro laughed.

(( Should we get a second group doing something? ))
PostPosted: Sat Jan 07, 2012 5:53 pm

((Since there are only three of us roleplaying here anymore if we were to do a second group it would require all 3 of us to play another character. You and I may have extra characters to choose from, but Raolain does not. Though I still have the profiles of all of the characters that various other roleplayers have abandoned. He could choose from one of them if he wanted, or make a new one. I'm all for doing a second group, but I'll leave it up to Raolain whether he wants to try to do two characters or not.))

"Hang on to those for now." William said to Kiro, gesturing to his blades. "It's best if I were to wait to treat them until just before we enter the cave. Otherwise the effectiveness of the treatment could start to wear off. If we don't have anything else to do, though, I suggest we head out now."

"Hmm, you know best." Kiro replied and sheathed his weapons. "Lets get going then, I'm feeling a bit impatient today." Kiro stated, shrugging a bit. I just need to clear my thoughts a bit. Battle helps. He thought to himself.

Mathias nodded in agreement and stood,"Yes. We'll investigate this Uther's Deep and hopefully find your son, sir. We'll need directions to this cave." The mayor nodded.
After quick preparations and a trek via the directions they had been given, Mathias and his companions found themselves at the cave mouth. Mathias dismounted from his horse and peered into the gloom of the cavern which was much in contrast to the bright sunny day.
Mathias gathered his sword belt and shield from his saddle, anf checked his armor buckled methodically," In all truth my friends.... I hope this turns out to be nothing..."

"Doubtful." William said.
Will dismounted from his horse, which he felt safe leaving untethered. He drew out the items he had stashed in his pockets earlier. Spreading out one of the sheets of paper he unstoppered his ink and dipped a brush in it. He quickly scribed a rune on the parchment then blew on it to dry. Once he was satisfied that the ink was sufficiently dry he rolled the sheet up and stuck it through the top of one of his phials of oil.
"Whip out those blades, boys." William said and did the same himself.
With his sword in his right hand and the phial in his left he carefully poured a small amount of the oil on the blade. The oil came out from the center of the rolled up paper which was stuck into the phial and ran down the length of the blade, leaving a thin coating behind.
"This'll allow us to fight any incorporeal fiends, or even a fiend spirit itself, though you can't kill the latter. Don't sheathe your blades either. This stuff'll gunk up your sheath. We'll have to wipe these blades down when we're done. Anyways..." William said, holding out the phial in an offer to treat the other two's weapons.

Mathias held out his blade to allow William to treat it with the oil. The normal grinning and laughing Mathias was replaced with a more serious and stern one now that violence was in the offing. He waited until William was finished before turning toward the cave once more and waited for Kiro to have his turn. A thought struck him then," William. Will this oil be useful on my shield as well? I mean to take point to cover you both from the front, but it would seem pointless if my shield were useless."

William was just finishing treating Kiro's blades.
"Yeah it would. I can't believe I didn't think of that myself." He said.
Will went to Mathias and used the now soaked parchment to spread the oil across Mathias's shield like a brush. When he was done he tossed the phial down on the ground.
"I'll grab that when we're done." William said and turned and started for the cave entrance. "Let's get going. The day's a wasting."

Mathias was true to his word and advanced into the cave first, his shield held before him and his sword held up and to the side in a ready position. His eyes scanned left and right as he tread ahead carefully, but not too slowly. He quickly noticed that the sunlight from outside did not penetrate too far into the cave and murmured behind him in a low voice,"Kiro... we'll need a torch."

As Mathias spoke closely behind him, Kiro whipped out a torch shaft which had flint made into the tip. Kiro skimmed it against the wall of the cave creating a spark and the torch took lite. "There." Kiro spoke bluntly and handed the torch to Mathias which gave him his free hand back to regrip his second sword.
