There's a bug.

I'm toying with the idea of adding links into some RP posts that lead the reader to a music file I think sets, enhances or otherwise improves the post it accompanies. Of course, this would require I start RPing again, but I think the idea has a lot of potential. Although it does have a lot of glitches I could use suggestions on.

1) Timing. A lot of drama garnered from music is only useful if appropriately timed. Which means that the music's effectiveness is highly based on the reader's speed. Using myself as an example, I read fairly quickly which means I might see moments in the music and the post lining up that don't line up for other readers.

Possible Solutions: Insert the exact clip of music I'd like to play at the exact point in the post I'd like it to start playing (I.e. "CLICK PLAY THEN CONTINUE TO READ") This presents another problem in disrupting the overall flow of the post itself, but it's the only viable solution I can come up with off the top of my head.

2) Music recognition. I'm not looking to use offbeat completely obscure music here, just music that gives me a feeling I think accompanies the post well. However, if you recognize the music and wherever it came from, it may unintentionally invoke the wrong emotion. For example: I happen to think that a fair deal of the Pirates and Pirates 2 Soundtracks make for excellent music to put over fight scenes between all kinds of vessels, not just seaborne ship combat. But if I try to use it in a dogfight in space, and your brain automatically links it to Pirates, then there is obviously some issue of clarity.

Possible Solutions: Tell everyone to get a more vivid imagination and get the hell over it?

3) Lyrics. I myself, have a knack for generally ignoring lyrics in a song, since I'm only there to establish a feel from the music itself, not whatever incessant crap the singer is babbling at me. I'm not so sure the rest of the world has a mind that functions as bass-ackwards as mine does. If a reader catches themselves listening to the lyrics instead of reading the post, they may end up with the wrong story altogether ("Soloist that was a wonderful post, but why was Happy McFunman thinking about slitting his wrists?")

Possible Solutions: Avoid music with lyrics altogether. This limits my selection, but it's not as if there is some shortage of absolutely fantastic music in the world that lacks a vocal line. I might also end up using songs whose lyrics are sung in a foreign language. They're remarkably easy to ignore when you don't understand them.

4) Musical Taste. As a classically trained pianist and violinist, I have a much deeper appreciation for a much wider spectrum of music than the average ear does. I enjoy a whole pile of music that everyone thinks I'm absolutely batshit ******** insane for. If I use music people have even a slight distaste for, it'll ruin not only the effect of the music, but the post altogether.

Possible Solutions: Send everyone through 12 years of rigorous piano practice. Then use the solution to problem 2.

5) Breadth of Effect. I have to be remarkably careful in how much storytelling I let the music do, because the music is not an excuse for lazy writing, it's an enhancement to an already solid post. However, this is another matter of personal preference, as some readers will more deeply invest themselves in the music, and others will favor the writing.

Possible Solutions: Replace all readers with robots. Ninja robots.
