hello everyone, some of you might have seen me in the clarinet section. I'm seriously thinking about playing the trumpet as my third instrument. I only played the trumpet for 5 minutes, but I like it already. I don't plan on playing it for band, I'm going to play it just for fun, or maybe in Orchestra or something if I get good enough. But anyway, how do you like put your mouth on and blow into the trumpet? I could play some of the low notes, like the first finger C i think and the one above that with the same fingering, but I had to struggle for that. How do I get higher than that? and how am I supposed to hold the trumpet? How much would a trumpet cost? (I'm not talking about a really good or expensive trumpet, just one that works and plays notes, even if they don't sound very good.) And any reccomendations of beginner's lesson books?
thanks in advance for any help.

YOu might be talking bout an F. and the sound =is like if you are trying to make a motor noise with a toy boat, I guess. I don't really think about it.

You'd probably be better off asking someone in your band about fingerings and how to hold it and such, it'd be easier than via the internet.

I have one trumpet...it's a no-name brand and not really the highest quality, but I usually switch instruments so frequently that I figured I wouldn't need a thousand dollar trumpet...doesn't it figure that I got attached to trumpet?

Okay...I'm still relatively new to trumpet too (well, I've been teaching myself for the last 4 years, but I'm self-taught...) but I'll try to help. First finger has nothing to do with a C...you're probably talking either a B flat or an F natural...(the next note up from that would be a B flat in the staff). To get higher you tuck the corners of your mouth in so you blow through the instrument with a smaller, tighter stream of air. You can find fingering charts all over the place online to show the fingerings for higher notes. To hold your trumpet, well...that's kinda tricky to explain without showing you, so I'll just direct you to this site: http://www.trumpetguild.org/itgyouth/masterclass/Hickman.htmIf you're not concerned about quality, you can find a passable trumpet pretty much anywhere. I got the one I use now off of Ebay. Lesson books? Well, if you're a raw beginner I'd recommend "Standard of Excellence" it goes step by step and has short songs at the beginning and harder music that could be played by whole beginning ensembles toward the end. Since you probably already know how to read music you'd be able to go through it quite quickly.

zomg. I'm a huge trumpet geek. I've only been playing it for 5 years too. 3nodding I own one trumpet, 2005 Bach Stradivarious with a 3c mouthpiece for those high notes, and I'm getting a jazz trumpet ASAP. I clean my trumpet before every performance...and if it's really dusty, after as well. I always tune. I practice with a metronome.... And I have the oppurtunity to become drum major...or switch over to french horn, cause I'm hella good at that, But I love playing my trumpet so much I don't want to do it. rofl My summer job is going to the local racetrack and playing the Star Spangled Banner before every race. .. I'm also about to have three summer jobs...Cause I am getting a job at a local restaraunt and I am going to open up some baseball games with the SSB. 3nodding My Bf is a trombone/baritone player and we often have our quarrels about which section is better. rofl But I still lurve him.

I have two trumpets, the student Bach (or, as I now call it, "The Trumpet That Was," poor thing just barely survived last band season) and my Bach Stradivarius, which is the most amazing thing ever.
