I didn't get checked till 38 weeks. They said they would have at the 37 week appointment if they had reason to believe I would actually be dilated.

Checking for dialation honestly doesn't tell them anything, so it is an unneeded procedure. You can start dialating up to a month ahead of time and it means squat. sweatdrop It *used* to be common procedure, it isn't anymore because it's been found to be worthless.

Most of the CNMs at my clinic wouldn't do it; honestly, the only one who did was the one who treated me horridly and was convinced I was going to die THAT MINUTE from HBP, which wasn't even that high, and that I'd have to be induced. rolleyes I was 39 weeks at the time, and there was honestly no reason to check me like that.

Yeah, my doctor said the only purpose for checking my dilation would be bragging rights at this point. My mom, grandma, my husband's mom, and sister-in-law all said they got checked and I should have, but I, however, was perfectly okay with not having the doctor sticking his hands in foreign places. xp

Is a little bit of spotting this late in pregnancy normal? I'm 39 weeks.
I haven't had a recent exam or intercourse, so neither would be the cause.

I *thought* I'd read something about pink- or brown-tinged discharge this late being a possible sign of labor starting soon, but I can't seem to find anything about it now.

What you're describing is bloody show. Does it look like a blob of mucus tinged with blood? I started to have mine 4 days--if I'm remembering correctly--before I went into labor. It is a sign you'll be going soon, how soon, you can't tell. It can start right before labor, it can start up to a week before. So try not to get overly excited about it like I did, it was a long 4 days. xd

Loves: Heh, yeah, their experiences are a bit out of date and not common practice anymore. rofl

I wouldn't call checking for dilation unneccesary. It doesn't give them anymore of an accurate date, but it does tell them that atleast your body is preparing. If you're going from 1cm to 2cm dilation then it shows you're making progress.

Don't forget that you can't quantify a lot of things in pregnancy. Unfortunately science doesn't know a lot about the labor process, or atleast the big triggers so doctors have to just go with what nature gives them to make sure you're coming along nicely.

Yeah, that does sound like bloody show/losing your mucus plug. I never noticed mine, but knew about it.

Good luck to you heaven and loves in your upcoming deliveries! How exciting!

Oh please let me modify that statement then: unless you're in ACTIVE labor, checking for dialation is useless. biggrin Some women slowly dialate starting a good month before labor begins, others are rock hard and nothing until it actually starts. It doesn't tell a thing unless you're in labor.

It's not needed, it's uncomfortable and because it doesn't tell the OB/midwife anything, it's quickly falling out of common practice.

Thank you! heart I can't wait to have my wee-one! I really think he's starting to think he's ready to come out, because I SWEAR the other night while I was laying down, I could feel him trying to squirm his way downwards and could feel his head moving around between my hips! It was extremely uncomfortable, and he gave up after about 10 minutes or so. stare He's just like his Daddy; procrastinator with little patience for things that take effort.

I second this! I went to a midwife who did check me at each appointment. It did nothing but get me all excited because two weeks before my due date I was 3 cm and like 80% effaced. My due date came and went and I had to be induced. So it was pretty much a waste!

Sidenote: Hopefully soon I will belong in thread again! The hubby and I have been talking about trying for another little bundle this year!!

So, does your mucus plug have to be somewhat bloody? Because, for the past two days, I've been discharging this really thick, boogery-like gunk. It usually happens a little after having sex, but it's been about three days since the last time my husband and I even had sex. confused

I've also been having tightenings in my abdomen that aren't painful, but my muscles get hard as a rock and last for half a minute or so. I'm wondering more-so about the plug, though. 'Cuz, the day after sex, I discharge a little the day after and that's it, but these have been fairly good-sized and much more frequent than usual.

Well, I just got back from the doctor. He stripped my membranes, he says that might cause me to go into labor within the next 24 hours.
If not, I'm scheduled for an induction on Wednesday.

Nope, you don't have to be having bloody show when losing your plug. whee

Heaven, why are they inducing you early?

I saw some of the latest statistics on inductions and frankly, they scare me. They're happening way too often.

Is it early? It's six days after I'm due (that's today. xp )

The OB said he doesn't let women go longer than one week past their due date.
