___06/22/06 In Which Loki Learns to Fight

He was learning.

Hand gripping the bar with newfound ease, Loki pulled himself up with a bit of effort and struggling, finally perching above the team of ghost hunters, staring down with quiet, crimson eyes. Observance was the best key; he had learned that the hard way. The last few days had done him a small bit of good. Not much, but it counted for something.

"Thirty-nine seconds. Not bad, but you still have a long way to go for improvement." Blake murmured, holding up a stopwatch and glancing at the other team members. "Shall we make it a bit harder for our little trickster?" The corners of his lips curved upwards in a slight joke, and Loki's wings flexed out in slight irritation.

"I'm up for it." Farin murmured softly, the quiet one stepping up and staring at Loki with her duel colored eyes. The cat she was formerly with was now nowhere to be found... curious.

"Everyone step back," The woman murmured, raising her arms. Loki raised an eyebrow, wondering if she was going to conduct a band. Smirking and giving a small chuckle, he sat there for a moment enjoying the hilarity of it all before he felt a small trickle of blood seep down his face. Blinking, he reached up and felt a small cut there, then narrowed his eyes at her. The others were nowhere in sight, and her hair was now floating upwards like a rising fog...

Oh s**t. So that was her ability. Leaning back, Loki leapt off of the top bar and coughed as he landed on the lower bar back first, the wind getting knocked out of him. Slumping and melting over it to land haphazardly on the floor, Loki took a moment to get his breath, getting a few more scratches in the process. He couldn't see her attack, but he saw her glowing dual-colored eyes, and her body poised like a statue... grabbing his goggles, he shoved them down over his face and over his eyes, now seeing the ethereal glow around the woman, as well as the attacks she was throwing.

"I expect great things from you, trickster... but you have so far disappointed me." The statue pose of hers vanished, and within a mere second she was in front of Loki, ripping the goggles from his face and throwing them away. Nails dug into his lower chin and forced his head upwards, in which her glowing eyes met his. "A great disappointment."

Grabbing her hand and shoving it away, Loki leapt off the floor and scrambled up one of the poles, soon using them for acrobatics to avoid all of her attacks as best he could. Concentrate... concentrate!! The hyena boy chided himself, shaking his head and feeling more of her spiritlike attacks wind over his skin, slicing it and making it seem as if they were mere papercuts. Closing his eyes, Loki grit his teeth and forced himself to feel where she was, feel where the attacks were...

And then it hit him. Sensing others' auras was exactly like sensing where a spirit was. It pissed him off that it took him this long to figure it out, but another part of him was very pleased that he had, indeed, figured out the fight. Pulling himself up and winding himself around the bars expertly, Loki launched himself at the woman, whom sidestepped easily, to which the boy countered with a drop and roll, his hand brushing just past her foot.

"Is that the best you can do?" Farin grinned, raising her hands once more.

"Yeah, it is." Loki drew his legs in to sit indian-style, leaning forward to place his head on his hands. "You have a hot foot." Confused at his statement and 'battle stance', Farin glanced down to find that a flame was on her foot, and with a twitch of Loki's hand, enveloped her whole body, save for her shoulders and up. Farin slumped, the aura around her dissipating into nothing as she collapsed on the ground. Snapping his fingers, Loki opened his left palm and let the fire drift reluctantly back into himself, feeling his lavalike arm burn.

"You okay?"

"I'm good. Just tired... haven't done that in a while." Farin laughed softly, curling up and yawning, now staring at Loki. "You're... ready, I think."

"Ready for what?" Loki muttered, eyes narrowing.

"I cannot say... but you are ready, no matter what anyone else says. Just be strong, Loki. We're counting on you."

Standing up, Loki grimaced as he brushed the back of his neck, not at all liking how others depended on him. He was, after all... just a kid. And he didn't really care to change, at the moment.

Feeling a pang in his heart, Loki glanced out the window as Farin slept, frowning at the rain. All the rain brought was despair, and sadness.

And all he could think of... was Lola.

___06/23/06 In Which Loki Learns His Lesson

"Heading for the showers? Here, use this." Shoving a bottle of shampoo in his hands, Shike ambled past him, rubbing his short hair with a small towel. "All of us 'hunters use it, the scent is supposed to clear your mind." As Shike left, Loki turned his head to glare at him a slight bit, feeling he was still unnerved about the last incident.

Glancing at the seemingly harmless bottle, Loki let out a mutter as he walked into the bathroom, slinging the towel over the door and turning on the water. Shirking his clothes off (save for his shorts) and closing the shower door, Loki turned the bottle over and promptly squeezed the liquid into his hair, rubbing furiously; he hadn't had a shower in ages.

Leaning against the wall, Loki sighed as he rubbed his temples, bringing his hands down to look at them. These hands had killed a god --

Wait.

Why the ******** were his hands black?

Slamming the shower door open, Loki stumbled in front of the mirror, glaring at his reflection before he shook, yelling at the top of his lungs in rage.

"What the HELL, my hair is BLACK!!" Slamming the door open to the main room, his crimson eyes wide with rage as he walked over to the group lounging, the sleek black of the 'shampoo' shining in the light.

"Welcome back." Shike murmured. Blake gave him a slight glare, before Shike grinned. "You know, the longer you leave it in, the better it gets - to dye, that is."

Bolting back to the shower, Loki was gone in an instant.

---

"That was not a nice thing to do," Blake murmured, pacing in front of the team. "We're supposed to work together, not do things to set us apart."

Loki sat down, his head leaning on his hand as he shot a glare at Shike. It had taken all but twelve shampoos to get most of the color out, and even then there were still five medium-sized black strands left, which he couldn't get out no matter how much he tried - or complained, for that matter.

"Tell that to him," Shike muttered, jabbing a thumb towards Loki.

"I'm telling it to all of you." Blake said in a matter-of-fact tone, crossing his arms. "Both Tank and Farin have been cooperative, Farin especially when it comes to Loki's training, but... I'm disappointed overall."

"How can we fix it?" Tank asked, leaning back in his chair.

"By going on a mission that will only allow teamwork. We either band up, or disband altogether. This will make or break us, and I will not lose any one member to this. Or else." He gave a warning glare, and continued when no one objected.

"Our next stop... is a somewhat popular place." He then murmured, drawing up to the table rolling out a rather old parchment. His lips parted as he spoke again, taking in an unneeded breath of air. "The place... where the mythological god was poisoned." A pause. "The trickster, Loki."

Not a word was said as all eyes focused on Loki, all lips pressed firmly shut.

___07/14/06 In Which the Ghostbusters Run Into a Complication

After each of the ghostbusters had gone their own way and did their own thing, they met up within two week's time, on the pathway to the place Blake had mentioned earlier.

In a way, Loki yearned for this, but on the other side... he dreaded it. Drawing up his bandaged arm, Lue scampered to rest on the boy's shoulder, nicking his ear with his teeth. Jumping slightly, Loki turned his head to glare at the lizard, opening his mouth to speak. He was beaten to it, however, when Lue whispered, "Pay attention. You're needed."

Tank glanced back at the boy, raising an eyebrow in question but never saying a thing, waiting until he caught up before extending a hand for help. Brushing it aside, Loki ambled up the trail, looking away as he passed. Tank stared after for a moment, continuing after even as Shike gave him a disapproving look.

"Make or break..." Sighed Farin, reaching up to brush her black sweaty bangs from her forehead. "Quite a challenge."

- - - - -

It was hours before they finally reached the rock, and all of the ghostbusters sat upon it in an instant, save for Loki, whom stared out over the short cliff, down to the water below. Lue stretched his neck out to stare at the water along with Loki, then to the ghostbusters who were wiping their faces with kerchiefs. He made a sound, making the woman glance up at him with slight knowing.

"So this is the famous rock." Shike tilted his head, giving a glare to Loki, which Loki met with the same attitude. "It's a shame we don't have the real thing. We all know that Loki was a guy."

"Actually," Farin started, "Loki was a female at one time-" only to be cut off by Blake's hand, open and held up at a high angle.

"Something's coming." The leader stood, lowering his arm before getting knocked down by an unseen force, colliding with the wall and crumpling into a seemingly lifeless form.

"Hello... rogue." A feminine voice stated, and before them appeared a beautiful woman, almost all naked. Both Tank and Shike were dumbstricken, but Farin rose with her own resolve, staring down the goddess that stood in front of her. "And hello to you, Meddler." The goddess murmured, raising her hand to cover a spreading smile.

"This is it, Loki. That's Freya, the goddess of war. Now is not the time to be a kid anymore. Time to grow up, and test your new strengths."

"Lue's right, Loki. I'm here to help, no matter what she may do to my body," Farin murmured softly, giving a small smile to the boy. "You're our only hope."

"Oh, you kids are so silly!" Freya giggled, three cats entwining themselves around her ankles. "What makes you think you have it so easy? War is upon us, and you're the only thing standing between me, and revenge." Her hand pointed at Farin. "Ready yourself, Meddler! You will not find I'm so easy!"

___07/15/06 In Which There Is a Battle of Wits

"Meddler!" Freya yelled, her voice shaking the land below them. It had only taken a single moment to change the scenery, and in a way, Loki was awed.

It was a vast darkness around them, a seemingly endless array of dirt. Clouds remained overhead as if they threatened to bring forth rain, yet a dusky smell of sand filled the gap between them.

According to Farin, the battle ground was now in their favor, and with good taste, as well. Around both gods were a barrage of spirits, all seemingly on standby, as if to await the outcome of the battle.

"It is in this world only that you have all of your former abilities," Farin explained. "Only you can do this; I cannot fight this battle for you."

"You have spoken too much." Murmured the goddess, raising her head high as her golden tresses quivered upon her shoulders. Raising her hand, she sent two spirits after Farin, but a wall of flame rose up, making the spirits halt in midair.

"Only if you win this fight will you have power over my brethren."

"Loki..." Farin murmured, sliding down until both legs of hers were splayed to either side of her body. It seemed that Loki had grown up slightly, in mind more than body. She had secretly been watching him, in the week after he had found the ghost hunters, and matured much more than she had expected in the first place. Of course, she still expected hiim to become the trickster he was supposed to be. In all the time she had been watching him, he had always been fighting for himself, but now... now, he was fighting for others, and looked well aware of it. It was true that the spirits respected him - in a sense, anyway - but if Freya won this battle, they would not know what the outcome of their future would be.

"Lantern, book, or scarf... none of those things of yours apply in this battle. For us, it shall be a battle of wit. Do you still have what it takes?"

"I guess we'll see." Glancing at his items, Loki shrugged off the book, scarf, and lantern, setting them all down together so as not to lose them later.

"And to make sure no one else interferes, your precious Lue will fight against my spirits." Once she had spoken, the cats around her ankles leapt to do her bidding, snarling with their claws outstretched to tackle the lizard spirit. "Do you know the rules of the game, rogue?" The cats halted at Loki's feet, as if afraid to touch him; Lue was still perched on his shoulders, staring down at the offending threat with silence.

"Name your rules."

"The rules are as stated, and once they are stated, everyone knows they cannot be changed. Is this agreed?" Every one of the spirit's heads nodded in agreement; they saw no harm in it.

"Very well. The game is-"

"To speak a riddle, and to answer with a riddle!" Farin yelled, standing up. The goddess turned completely red, her fingers balling up into fists.

"You fool! Do not meddle in affairs that are not your own!"

"You're the moron. We're Meddlers, remember?" She gave a grin and a thumbs up to Loki, before stepping back once more. To this, Freya had no answer, but continued onward as if nothing had happened.

"As I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives, Each wife had seven sacks, Each sack had seven cats, Each cat had seven kits. Kits, Cats, Sacks, an wives, How many were going to St. Ives?" The goddess leapt back, crouching on the ground while she glared at him.

"One." Loki answered simply, drawing up his hand and holding up one finger, giving a small smirk. "First think of the person who lives in disguise, who deals in secrets and tells naught but lies. Next, tell me what's always the last thing to mend, end, the middle of middle and end of the end? And finally give me the sound often heard... during the search for a hard-to-find word. Now string them together, and answer me this, Which creature would you be unwilling to kiss?" Leaning against the wall, Loki glanced to the side, as if looking bored.

The goddess Freya drew up and glared at him for a moment, before answering, letting out a sigh. One could tell she was already sick of this, but the game had to be played until there was a loser. "Spider," was her answer, and her reply, "At night they come without being fetched, and by day they are lost without being stolen. What are they?"

Rolling his eyes up to the sky, Loki grimaced as he felt all eyes upon him from the spirits. A wit battle was nothing, but when plenty were watching, especially those he didn't know... it unnerved him, just a bit.

"Dreams." He finally spoke, spreading his fingers out and waggling them at her, as if mocking her. She gave a sneer, drawing back further as she waited for his question.

"In a marble hall white as milk, lined with skin as soft as silk, within a fountain crystal-clear, a golden apple doth appear. No doors there are to this stronghold, Yet thieves break in to steal its gold."

"Fool!" Freya murmured, hissing as she drew closer, almost caressing his face now. "An egg, boy. Have to do better than that..."

"Hush, Freya, and deliver your next riddle."

"All about, but cannot be seen, can be captured, cannot be held, no throat, but can be heard. What is it?" Her fingers now ran down his cheek, twitching in anticipation.

"The wind." He spoke, his crimson eyes locking onto hers, his whole body poised as she stopped, drawing her hand back. Her eyes went wide, and narrowed when he gave just enough of a smirk to be noticed.

"If you break me, I do not stop working. If you touch me, I may be snared. If you lose me, nothing will matter. What am I?"

"Interesting, Loki. I would not think that you had a heart." Yanking her hand away, Freya snapped upright and turned around, fishing inside her small bit of clothing for a moment. "I am the darkest thing around, not very likely to be found. I am not sold everywhere, but I do cause quite a scare. Many I have killed in plague, mistreat me and it gets you dead."

Loki narrowed his eyes, pursing his lips in thought. Freya, agitated with his sudden silence, turned with a vial in her hands, glaring with full ferocity now.

"Poison," He suddenly murmured, drawing back.

"Not just any poison, Loki... it's your favorite." In the blink of an eye, she dashed forward and drew cuts on his unmarked arm, then with the other hand drew poison across it.

Loki, now quite weak, fell to the ground and writhed, letting out a shriek of pain before clamping his mouth shut, gaining his emotions under control.

"Your turn... if you are able, rogue."

"Not everything can go through the... green glass... door," Loki breathed, forcing himself to sit up and grip his arm tightly, trying to squeeze out the poison, to no avail. Freya's eyes widened as she took a staggering step back, mouth opening wide. Ignoring her look, he continued on.

"A god cannot go through the green glass door... but a goddess can." He closed his eyes, unable to continue, as he was clamping his teeth shut tenfold.

"It seems I have an advantage over you, Loki." Freya murmured, drawing up close and chuckling. "I can go through the green glass door, but... you cannot. The answer is life, something you will not survive." Grabbing him by the belt around his neck which had been under his scarf, she glared at him face to face.

"Wrong." Loki murmured softly, forcing a grin on his face. "You lose."

"What...?!" Freya screamed, letting go to watch Loki drop to the ground.

"Take her, spirits. It's... over..." Loki grinned, watching his brethren overtake the goddess, slowly eating away her skin, and making her body grow cold... it was a grand feast, for them.

He felt warm arms wrap around him, and glanced to see Farin smiling in an almost good way, and provided a smile of his own. He felt that it wasn't Farin, and he knew the entity inside that body all too well.

"Lola..." He whispered, curling up in her arms as she used to do in his, his half-lidded eyes slowly glancing around to see Lue laying on all three very unhappy cats.

"Lue..."

"Good job, trickster." Lue said appreciatively, smiling and showing all of his pointy teeth. "They'll come to respect you in time, but as of now... Loki?" Frowning, Lue glanced worriedly at Lola whom was currently possessing Farin's body. Neither knew what to do, and were at a loss for when Loki finally went unconscious.

He had won, but why did they feel that this battle had been lost...?

___07/15/06 In Which Kanth Goes Shopping

It had taken the female shifter a lot of goading into going to the store (of which to goad her took pointing out the empty cupboards), and as she rolled her cart down the aisle, she eyed the bottle of already made iced tea. Unsweetened, it said, as she picked it up, opening the cap and taking a drink to see how it tasted.

The face she made was priceless. Throwing the now opened bottle into the cart, Kanth stuck her tongue out at it and continued on to shop for other things. She never was one to break the rules and not buy something after she had purposefully done something to it. It wasn't fair - you drank it, you bought it. It was morals she had had to teach herself.

It wasn't long before she finished her shopping, having picked up everything under the sun; no matter how many came and went, she still had many mouths to feed, and had to smile at the memory.

But with that smile, came a frown. Her fingers paused on the cash she had slid forward for the clerk, making the clerk c**k her head quizzically to the side.

"Um... miss?"

Kanth was as lost as Loki.

___07/28/06 In Which There Is ..... Nothing .....

Ergo, oceanus, maritimus, ergo, opacare, matutinus, ergo, septentrio, meridies, ergo, occidens et orientis...

The voices around him echoed with sound as a flute played, and he found that he was floating in darkness, even with his eyes open. There was no source of light, and therefore no rescue for him.

They were all gone.

Lola was gone. Lue was gone. Farin was gone. Kanth was gone.

... Ruri was gone.

He was alone. Floating in the black abyss of his turmoil, he refused to admit that he felt pain, no matter how bad it felt along his arms. His arms were on fire, and it wasn't the kind of fire he was immune to...

It was the poison. The poison was what was tainting him, making him mad, making him out of control... that was why he had started Ragnarok. It was all the poison's fault, what made him start the huge war...

And now, again, was it repeating itself? Was he in Hel's domain again, atoning for the sins he had committed in this lifetime, as he had the former?

Gasping for breath, Loki let out a long scream as he felt his insides being torn asunder, though he could feel no skin parted, nor any blood that poured...

... was it all in his mind?

Maybe his spirit had finally decided it was all over... and then he felt the warmth. The ripping apart, the warmth, the soothing feeling...

It was then that he opened his eyes truly, and grimaced at the light in the room. Kanth was curled up on his chest, her palms caked with blood as she slept, though it didn't seem to affect her any.

"It's about damn time you woke up, kid." Blake murmured sadly, not having the strength to rise from his chair. He, too, looked tired. "Your guardian nearly ripped us all apart. Thought she was a spirit at first, but she didn't bleed like one."

Not answering, Loki stared down at Kanth for a moment, before noticing the bandages around his upper chest. So they had finally found out he WAS a guy, and hadn't made a big deal about it. But he did wonder about the wound on his chest...

"You're healed now." Farin's voice said, and she walked through the room, not even sparing a glance. Blake looked at her with an irritable face. Farin merely gave a shrug, the corners of her lips twitching. "I did not expect this result."

"You're not who you say you are, are you?" Blake muttered.

"I'm exactly who I said I was. Just a little bit more." Farin shot back, entirely not in the mood for argument at this point. "You were lost, Loki, and then you were found. And now you have to learn a little bit more. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, after all."

Grunting, Loki turned on his side, a look of sadness on his face. So it hadn't been a dream. Lola was really gone... and it was then that he knew what had happened to her.

She was... really gone. And would never be coming back. With her loss, he had gained... something more. Teamwork... but she had crossed over. Hadn't she? Lola had crossed over...

He didn't think it was worth it.

Nothing... was worth it anymore...

___09/10/06 In Which Loki Returns Home

(( Roleplay; Vavalion and Loki ))

I'm gonna break... the cycle...
I'm gonna shake up... the system...
I'm gonna destroy... my ego...
I'm gonna close... my body now...

Io stood, letting out a well-deserved sigh, then straightened and grinned, observing her work.

The living room was now thoroughly barricaded with a number of baby gates, all hard furniture corners were cushioned, and all cupboard doors of questionable safety firmly affixed with childproof locks. The rug was strewn with various toys, and her three small charges were playing among them.

Well, "playing" was a relative term, really. Noah, disappointed at the lack of monster-shaped things that fell apart easily, was determined to play Godzilla and vehemently knock down every structure Shino attempted to build with his large plastic blocks. Shino was just patiently rebuilding his structures as soon as they were knocked over, and Vavalion was watching them with something between curiosity and confusion, quietly sucking on the ear of a plush rabbit.

"Finally," Io sighed, smiling as she headed for the couch. "With all of you in the same room for once, I can keep an eye out without feeling like I'm running a marathon."

Naturally, a large moth chose that moment to flutter across the room.

Shino saw it, and, immediately entranced, forgot about the blocks and started crawling after it. It flew clumsily over the gate, which the child merely started clamboring over as well.

Noticing the movement, the small white dragon on Io's shoulder nudged her chin urgently, lifting into the air and hovering next to her as she blinked and turned to see what Cynder was alerting her to.

"Aack! No, Shino, no pretty moths right now! For heaven's sake, you guys are like a herd of kittens!" She darted over to the gate to stop him, catching the moth with an easy swipe of her hand and moving to a window to let it out. Shino seemed satisfied with that, staring out the window for a moment before going back to the blocks.

The large, catlike creature taking up Io's favorite half of the couch looked up at them for a moment before going back to washing its paws and acting like it had always been there. Io, having been about to sit there, just gave Encinare a tired, half-assed glare.

Having been hiding under the chair, Kefka decided to make his appearance at that moment she was near by launching out from underneath, his entire body wrapping around Io's ankles as his teeth bit into her skin, and he gnawed rather happily while looking at her to see some sort of reaction.

"Gnaaah!" But, rather used to Kefka attacks by this point, the height of Io's reaction was to scowl, reach down, pry him off (Kefka chewing on her arms wasn't much better than Kefka chewing on her legs, but at least she had a slightly higher pain tolerance there), and then shake her arm vigorously over the couch in hopes that he'd get dizzy and relent.

Vavalion, however, just edged away from the crazed little hellion with a slightly pained expression. He hadn't liked Kefka from the moment he'd met him. Something about the crackling knot of cruelty and sadistic glee made him feel nauseous. He wasn't quite sure what.

It was at that moment the door was flung open, and amidst the torrent of rain trodded in Kanth, who paused and shut the door with her leg.

A large slam echoed in the room, and it wasn't long before she slid down to the floor, slowly lowering the sopping mess that was Loki.

Letting out a muffled sound, Loki glanced around and seemed to sulk under the gazes, before turning his head away, clutching the little lizard he owned with a small squeak of protest from him.

"Long time no see..." Kanth muttered, providing a small but very tired smile as she looked at Io.

Kefka, having seen Kanth the moment she came in, stopped immediately what he was doing and actually behaved, zooming over to her in an instant and checking her over as a mother would its child.

Strange, he was.

"Ara...?" Hearing the door open, Io peered over the gate towards it, and started as she saw who it was. "Kanth!" In an instant she was over the gate and by her side as well, peering worriedly down at her and Loki. "Are you all right? Is Loki all right? What happened? Oh, hold on, I'll get you a -" A large towel abruptly dropped onto her head. "-towel. Thanks, Cynder." She started to wrap it around Kanth as the small dragon zipped back with another for Loki, giving a few chiding trills to the soaked vagrants.

"They weren't happy when I took him away, but he's under my care," Kanth snapped, starting to dry herself off, then stopping, catching her breath. "Sorry, can't overdo it anymore..."

"Is he here?" Loki muttered, glancing around for Vavalion, but failing due to the hair in his eyes.

Io shrugged. "Screw them; you care about him, right?" She took the second towel and plopped it down on top of Loki, ruffling up his hair a bit as she started to dry him.

Vavalion, meanwhile, had actually managed to get over the gate by using his tail for leverage. He knew it was Loki, even though he didn't feel the way Loki usually did, and he inched carefully up to him, tugging worriedly at Loki's clothes. Loki felt... worried and confused and kind of sad, and maybe even scared. Or maybe is was Vava who was confused and scared. It was hard to tell, but still, it wasn't like Loki! Loki was supposed to be mischievous and strong, with a heavy dose of snark! At least the subtle undertone of caring was still there...

Glancing up, Loki stared at Vava for a moment before pulling him into his arms, giving a small sound as he grit his teeth together. You're still here...

"Yeah, but I'm worried more for him now. He's got a shitload more to deal with now, thanks to my interference. The Ghostbusters taught him s**t. They doubted the whole way through he was the actual God. Well, reincarnation anyway." Kanth sighed, putting a hand to her head. "And this damn headache won't go away..."

"Want me to get you something? You know I keep a truckload of ibuprofen around at all times..." Io bit her lip, obviously concerned and not sure if she wanted to try to show it or not. "I guess I'll have to ask for the whole story later... but honestly, Kanth, I'm crazy impressed by how dedicated you've been to Loki. I'd eat my own tail if he was ever worse off because of you." She glanced down at the two Legends, giving a tiny smile. Cynder alighted on Loki's shoulder, nudging the towel against him and nipping lightly at his ear as if to say he ought to be more worried about drying off before he catches pneumonia.

Vavalion gave a small noise, startled for a moment before snuggling into Loki's hug. His tail wrapped tightly around the older Legend's wrist, almost cutting off the circulation as Vava's eyes watered. He sniffled, batting his hand against Loki as if that would help make him feel better. He wouldn't rest easy until he knew for sure that his "older brother" was okay, and Vava had certainly shown to be something of a worrywart.

"Io... I'm not a shifter anymore." She stared at him. "But he is. Tell me, how is he better off with what I had to deal with...?" Her eyes shifted to the floor, and stayed there, glued to a single spot.

Loki said nothing, nor did nothing. The pain, to him, was rather welcoming... it meant that he was alive. He was still living, and very much still there. His realization was that he still had people, but would they want him? He glanced up at Io, doubt in his crimson eyes.

Io blinked, rubbing the back of her neck as she thought about that one. "Eeeeh... well, from what I gathered, the family relations were the worst part, right? He won't have THAT to deal with." She paused, glancing back and forth between them, and folding her arms about herself. "Um, but isn't a shapeshifter what you... were, genetically? It's an amazing act to give such a thing up to someone you love, but what does that mean for you? What do you become without it...?" Starting, she cut herself off and backed down. "Erk, no, nevermind. I'm being stupid, asking something like that. I think like such a goddamn robot sometimes... come on, you two look like you could use some dry clothes. No sense in prolonging the misery here..." She smiled, looking back down to Loki with a welcoming, warm, and unconditionally open heart as she stood and offered her hand.

Vavalion flinched suddenly, getting a flash of the pain, and instantly loosened his tail, trying hard not to grip it again. He stared up at Loki with his wide, unblinking eyes, not comprehending the small storm he felt from him.

What do children know of doubt?

Kanth's eyes darkened, and she looked away, not really wanting to say. "I... don't know." She lied, and both of them knew that she was lying. Which meant that something bad was going to happen.

Satisfied with Kanth and giving a feral grin, Kefka soon jetted out of there, cackling madly. He heard death, and he was in glee!

It was then that Loki noticed the dragon at his shoulder, glancing up to her and lifting up Lue to meet her. His arms were still wrapped around Vava, and slowly he turned to look back at the kid, curiosity ebbing everything else away. How long since he had last acted like a kid...? He couldn't even remember.

Lue, eyes widening, flicked out his tongue in slight greeting to the Velvet.

Io's eyes saddened a bit, but she wasn't going to pressure her friend further. "Well, in any case, come upstairs with me. I just finished drying a load of laundry; you can wear some of those even though they're mine... they're nice and warm."

Cynder pulled her head back a bit as she was faced with Lue, unsure what to make of the lizard. She wasn't entirely certain she liked the look of him, he being a fire elemental and she of the water element, but at the moment he was being harmless enough. She gave him a curt nod and took to the air again, settling back on Io's shoulder.

Vava felt the tight knot unwind, and in relief, smiled. He tugged at Loki's clothes again, and, finding them uncomfortably wet, made a disapproving face. Loki needed to get new clothes too! Being cold and wet couldn't be much fun! Slithering out of Loki's grasp, Vava tugged him in Io's direction, waving a hand up at her. "Lo'i..."

Nodding, Kanth stood and walked after Io silently, but stopped as she looked at Loki, frowning. "Come dry off, kid..." She ordered sternly, but softly.

Lowering his head in reply, Loki rose with Vavalion in his arms, heading upstairs and passing the two easily, not giving them a second glance. It wasn't long before he found his own room, setting Vavalion on the bed, the lizard tumbling off beside the kid.

Walking away from the snake-boy, Loki stood in the middle of the room and stripped off his tattered and wet clothing, throwing it into a heap at his feet.

It wasn't long before Kanth was at the doorway, sighing in slight frustration, though she couldn't really blame him. She was cold herself, but unlike him, kept her clothes on. Her worry for him outweighed herself.

User Image Two months.

It had been two months without Kanth, without a guardian... just him and Lue, on their own, taking life as it came.

"What do you wanna do now, Lue?" Loki muttered, hands shoved in his pockets as he wore his patchwork coat around his figure, his lantern carried by the lizard that sat upon his shoulder. A shrug came from the small lizard, tail flicking as he turned to look around at the area. Why had Loki wandered here?

"Lo'ee?" Lue asked around the bar in his mouth, tilting his head. Loki shifted his gaze to the side, glancing up at the old sign that now read 'Ghost Hunters'. They had fixed it.

"Yeah. I'm curious..." Turning, Loki walked in and glanced around, mouth forming a small 'o' of distaste. The area was completely empty, no life found whatsoever. The couch was covered with a light film of dust, and the table in which the equipment was on lay untouched, the batteries having long ago died.

"Nu'one hear." Lue seethed, sucking in saliva that had drooled over the handle. He didn't complain; Loki had other matters to figure out.

"No, it doesn't feel right... guk!" He jerked forward as a hard object collided with his skull, making him reel back, reaching up to feel a fresh bump beginning to form under his fingers. That would smart later. "What..." His sight slowly began to blacken as he was hit again, hitting the floor hard...

He didn't even feel the impact.

-----

Groaning, Loki woke, instincts instantly alert and onguard as he froze, glancing around. He was in a closet - no... it was bigger than a closet. Moving his hand to brush his blonde and black-highlighted hair from his face, he hissed as he found out they were shackled to the wall.

"Just what the hell is the meaning of this?! Lue!" He jerked a bit more, trying to loosen the shackles to no avail, unable to see his fire spirit anywhere. His lantern was nowhere to be found, either.

"It's about time you woke up." Murmured a cool voice, and in stepped Farin, her long raven hair cascading over her shoulders. "I have a prospect for you... shapeshifter Loki." She gave a wry grin.

"What..." Loki started, looking at himself. This was far too familiar, yet he couldn't place his mind on it; it was almost as if the memory was dancing just out of his reach.

"Valkyrie Armor. I figured it would trigger all of your memories or your ability to shift, but... so far, it hasn't worked." She gave a shrug, seeming unintrigued. "Anyway, my prospect... is for you..."

"Whatever you're going to say, you can take it and shove it. You're not Farin."

"So, the great trickster still has spark..." Farin seemed amused now as she ignored his comment completely. Reaching down to brush his hair from his face, Farin watched as the trickster winced and jerked, raking his teeth across her fingers, though not getting enough distance to get a good hold to bite. "You little..."

"Hold." Blake walked in, an eyebrow raised as he glanced from Loki to Farin. Farin stepped back and clutched her bleeding hand to her chest, though her eyes were wide with hatred as she continued to stare at Loki.

"Meddlers... you explained this to me before, but you never explained what your purpose was."

"All in due time, Blake." Farin muttered, glancing to the side and thinking for a moment, before sighing. "I'll leave you two be." She moved out the doorway, leaving the two to themselves.

Loki and Blake remained silent for a long moment, until it was the blonde that broke it. In a soft voice, he gave a sound, then cleared his throat. "... why?"

"... you'll understand when you're older." Blake murmured his reply, turning to leave.

"Everyone always SAYS that! Why can't they just ******** explain?! I'm not stupid, when everyone thinks I am!" Loki hissed, jerking against the chains on the wall. Oh, where was his fire when he needed it? He couldn't use anything. Blake stopped in the doorway, his hand reaching out to steady himself on the sides.

"I... wanted you to be something more. I wanted you to stay here... forever. I still do." Loki shut his mouth at this, hanging his head. He couldn't stay. He had other people to care for. Couldn't they get that? They couldn't hold him here forever.

He had to care for Vavalion... since he didn't have Lola anymore.

Not another word was said as Blake walked out, shutting the door behind him and making all light dissipate, leaving Loki in the dark. The only light source were the orbs in the armored shoulderpads on the clothing Loki wore, eminating a kind of magic that, if Loki had realized it, was preventing him from using any of his powers.

And, if Loki had listened hard enough, he would hear the dripping of water in the faint distance... those slow and steady droplets spiralling down into a puddle on the floor.

___01/02/07; A Brisk Snow, and Fire's Flow

Mayu's Rescue had been perfect timing for Loki. He was a lot more relaxed than he had been (mostly due to the kidnapping, but he'd never admit that out loud), and it made his eyes open a slight bit to occurrances that were happening around him.

The Meddlers. They kept interfering with what he was doing, and that forced Loki to actually think about them. Reaching up, Loki pulled the coat around him, wincing at the way it felt against his shredded shirt and bare skin. He hadn't exorcised in months, and his arm had ebbed to a dull thrum of pain, which made it slightly bearable.

When he had gotten out, a veil was lifted that made him a bit more lighthearted - especially when Mayu was the one that had done it... but, as usual, he had other things to tend to.

But, first things came first. Kanth... she was most likely worried. Biting his lower lip, Loki shook his head and started off towards a place he didn't think he'd return to.

Home.

___01/18/07 In Which the Meddlers Recover Themselves

"WHY did I help him? He could have lost to Freya's battle, but that damned woman had to interfere--!" A long grey-haired woman was calmed instantly as a man's hands pressed onto her shoulders with ease, his face coming into view as he smiled rather coldly.

"Patience, my pet." Murmured the other, reaching up to pull her grey hair back with ease. "We have spies all around..." He paused as he nipped her ear yearningly, pulling away before she could respond. "You got his book, yes...? After you posed as Farin..."

"Right here... my love." She smiled as she produced the book, opening up the blank pages to his scrutinizing eyes. The man narrowed his eyes, grabbing the book and ripping out a few pages, hissing softly at them.

"These... are useless. What is this, mere child's play?" He raised his hands and burned the book, letting the thing turn to ashes as he stared at the smouldering leftovers in his palm. "Hnnn... I am disappointed in this Loki. He is a God, is he not?"

"He is, my love." The woman bowed low, keeping her head down.

"Then why does he not act like a God? Tell me, Uin..."

"I... I don't know, my love. But Farin... Farin is protecting him... she never protects anyone. One of Amadeus' followers trained her... so she is one of the old. One of the few that follows Tiresius' old laws..." She gasped as a hand was clutched around her throat, slamming her against the wall as dark eyes glared.

"I do not want to hear that name ever again? Is that clear?!" The man hissed, gaining a silent nod from her as she trembled. He sighed and let her fall unceremoniously to the ground, turning to leave. "Find out more about Loki. Find out why he isn't attacking more Gods. Find out... what his weaknesses are." He halted in his steps, turning to glare more darkly now. "Go now." Trembling even more, the old woman stood up and rushed out, her mind set intently on Loki.

Her orders were clear, and she'd make damn sure to serve her master - her lover - very well.

It had been some time since Loki had returned home... nearly a year, or was it less? It could have been more... Loki didn't know. The only thing he knew was the smell of food when he had stepped into the house, and the feeling was strange; there were no ghosts around, though a faint aura came from the library.

He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. He'd been gone for so long that... he didn't know what to say anymore.

Io had fallen asleep on the library couch, Vavalion atop her and Cynder curled around her neck. It looked as though she'd been in the middle of reading a bedtime story that had worked a bit too well.

Loki winced as Lue ran across his shoulders, curling there as he approached cautiously, reaching out to ghost fingers over Vavalion's face. After so long... after so much time... he finally got to see the one he wanted to.

It had been worth it.

"Vvvvava." He smiled, crouching to get a better look.

The child yawned in his sleep, turning and murmuring something with a soft smile.

"Vvvv." Loki tried again, ears flicking back as he moved to pick up the child, falling into a sitting position and turning Vavalion so he could trace the jawline.

He babbled something more, drooling a bit this time and snuggling into Loki's warmth.

"Mmmmbvlvvlghhglg-ki."

"Heh." Loki curled his tail about himself, reaching up to grab Lue (the poor lizard flame-spirit squeaked) and drop him onto Vavalion's stomach.

Well, since Lue was good, Vavalion wouldn't react, right? He half glared at Lue before chuckling.

Vava wriggled a bit uncomfortably - lizards on your tummy feel funny! - and batted blindly at the air a bit, looking about to wake up.

Lue turned to flick his tongue out at Loki, before curling up on Vavalion's stomach, avoiding the hands as best he could. Loki stood a bit wobbily, heading towards his room and shutting the door behind him, sitting on the bed and curling up next to the other in a gentle fashion.
