~Vahe swooped down to touch his master- and his father's- hand. Something stirred in him, and the meij expressed itself through the bird's will. To this, he gave to the man who knew the meij- and the Banyas- better than perhaps any other.

Taniel was just about to sing for Anezka's Banya when Vahe sang his fortune. Taniel smiled at him, as he always did when fortunes came, and stroked Vahe's head before the Banya regained enough of itself from the Meij to become snippy again.
He closed his eyes and repeated his fortune, as it would be some time before he could record it. But the words fit to a tune easily, and so stayed in his memory.
When he was sure he understood the fortune, he smiled at Anezka.
"Sorry for the delay..." he murmured, before singing out in search of Hadassah.

Taniel frowned. "I wonder if perhaps my voice is not quite as strong as it once was," he said, sadly. "The next step, as I told your sisters-of-the-caravan, is to bring a needle and thread. As well, ask a tree for permission and bring me nuts, berries, something of the sort. And we will try again."
He turned to Heather now, accepting her items. This would be trying, doing so many of these callings so close together. He smiled at her, then knelt. With the needle and thread, he sewed the berries together - they were soft enough that the metal slipped through easily. Tying the thread into a knot (creating a loop), he held the berries between his hands and closed his eyes. Deep breaths later, he sung out, and there was more power this time.

((*glares at the random number generator*))
When no response came from the Banya, Taniel frowned once more. Was his voice beginning to fail him? He looked apologetically at Heather, before shifting the berries in his palm. She had one more he was looking for.
And so he tried again.

Taniel let out a sigh of relief as Secra came fluttering back. Perhaps it was not his voice, after all! He turned a relieved look at Heather, before approaching Marissa. Smiling down at Kale, he took the thread and needle from his mother, then accepted the acorns and charcoal pencil. The other items, he told Kale to keep - they may come in useful one day.
Kneeling again, he tied fancy knots around the acorns, then pierced the tops of each acorn. He marked each seed with the charcoal, then closed his hands around them.
He began to sing once more.

Lucia came soaring back, and Taniel let out another contented sigh. He rose, now slightly unsteady from exhaustion, and took both the acorns and the berries to the forest, where he hung the berry loop upon a branch and settled the acorns at the foot of the tree. Then he returned.
"Miss Heather," he said, softly, "your remaining Banya must have flown far. If you still want me to retrieve him... it will take much more work. This time, I dropped into a small trance. But for my voice to reach farther... I must open myself to the Meij. It can be dangerous - I may not wake. However, I have one-use charms that can keep that for happening. To continue offering my services, though, I'm afraid I must ask for money. Fifty couplets, to be exact, so that I might purchase another charm when next I can."

Heather was relieved when Secra came back, she smiled as the bird landed on her shoulder. "Don't fly off again, please!" She smiled happily though as she turned back to the banya man.
After listening she handed over the 50 couplets, she only had 80 to begin with but it would be worth it, she would just have to do some work around the caravans to gain some more.
"Thank you so much for all your help!"

Kale was ecstatic as Lucia, flying back to them, begrudgingly bypassed his mother and landed heavily on his own shoulder. "Thank you, mister!" He cried, grinning from ear to ear an Taniel. Marissa smirked at her stubborn bird's antics but paid them no mind. She too turned to Taniel and bestowed upon him deepest thanks. "Your kindness is invaluable," she told him, and then took Kale by the hand and returned to her wagon.

Taniel hadn't expected for Heather to pay him so soon. He'd been hoping for at least a night of rest, but the look on her face... he couldn't exactly deny her. So he smiled weakly, taking the couplets into his wagon. He quickly got a drink of water to soothe his throat, and one of the charms, and made his way back out. He made sure his visitors stood away from him enough that he could settle down on the ground without feeling crowded.
"This is the last thing I'll be able to try today," he said, softly. "I'm growing tired - the Meij can take its toll. I need rest after this, or else I won't be able to offer my best for you."
Murmuring something over the charm, he closed his eyes. He began to hum, to sway back and forth, and when his eyes slid open half-way, they were glazed and distant. This time, when he sung, there was something even more powerful behind it. It touched upon notes strange and new to human ears. It wasn't overly loud, but one could feel it reaching, reaching so far.

When the trance faded, and there was no sound of Banya wings, Taniel groaned, sagging forward, head touching the ground for a moment. He had so rarely gone into those trances lately... it left him exhausted. Slowly, slowly, he rose.
Turning to Heather, he glanced at the ground shamefully. "Your remaining Banya must have flown far," he murmured, clearly tired. "There is one last thing... but it can't be done now. Or soon, as I hear we'll be on a ferry in due time. I will come to you when we can try one last time. I'm... I'm sorry."
He had expected this to work - very few Banya ever flew so far.
Then he turned to Ro, who had been waiting so very patiently. "I'm sorry for the wait, my child. I just wanted to ask - if you haven't gathered it already - whether or not you would like to be my assistant. When we get new Banya chicks, they will need tending before they're sold, and you have a natural touch with them. I'll teach you everything I can about them, if you'd like." He smiled, but swayed on his feet.
"But I need to sleep, now. When your friend comes back, please tell her to return in a day or two?"
And after waiting just a moment to hear her answer, he trudged back into his wagon, feeling tired, and betrayed by his voice.

Heather watched intrigued by what he was doing but she did not return. "It's so odd, out of the two I would have expected her to have come back, she is such a sweetheart. Thank you anyway, you have at least got our grumpy one back." She smiled and lowered her head in thanks, before heading out the door with the one Banya that did decide to come back.
She then left to go back to her caravan, feeling slightly bad for the Banya man, he had tried so hard.

Rojiza smiles and nods gleefully. A chance to spend more time with the Banya and learn from the man who seems to know everything about him. She feels awful for him, since three times Heather's other Banya had refused to come home. She writes on her notepad with her pencil: I would be honored to study under you. I'll help you in any way I can. She offers the notepad to him with a broad, youthful smile.

Anezka nodded to Taniel and left. She was saddened the lose of the banyas and the trouble it was taking for them to return. Walking with slumped shoulders, she strolled quietly through the nearby wooded areas in search of what Taniel had said. Speaking in a hushed voice, she knelt down and spoke to a small bush as she removed some of its berries, then headed back to her wagon. Within Varekai, her mother searched out her sewing box and retrieved the needle and string that Ani needed. With everything in hand, she returned to Taniel's wagon.

Rojiza heads toward the Banya man's wagon with two of her precious birds. Taog, perched contentedly on her shoulder, and Aurelia nestled in her arms. She's still rather wary of Aurelia flying away again, and keeps a firm, but gentle hold on the neon-colored fowl. Ro knocks on Taniel's wagon door. She'd puzzled it out in her head, what Iagan had said, and thinks she knows what he'd meant.
