Silence cast a curious glance after Shane as the bartender went off after another woman whom Silence had somehow failed to notice before spoke with her. She then turned her attention to the woman who had caused Shane's demeanor to change so abruptly. She had blue eyes and auburn hair and seemed relatively normal. But appearances were often deceiving, Silence knew from experience.

Just look at Meshach, she thought to herself. He used to be a dragon. Not that it shows, mostly.

Meshach, as if sensing that Silence's thoughts had turned toward him, glanced over his shoulder at her. He gave nominal attention the young woman who had caught the bartender's attention. She was of little interest to him, even if she did call the rather capable-seeming woman Shaney-pie.

"You don't say," Meshach said in response to Rem's statement. "I always thought insanity was the number one reason for insanity."

He said this with a completely straight face. He was still growing accustomed to making appropriate facial expressions to accompany his words, and he had found that speaking without expression when in doubt was the safest thing to be done. That, and the fact that he often forgot to grin and smile because a smirk was his natural expression.

Tiamat heaved a sigh. They'd been here too long. She was growing restless, and if Kaisa wanted to come here and sit around all day, he could damn well do it after they'd been by the big nest-building they stayed in here and he'd made sure she could get in and out of her aerie room so she wouldn't have sit here and feel her brain cells start to rot from boredom.

She picked herself up, walked over and examined the fence, and decided it would be easy enough to jump without actually having to fly over. Muscles rippled as she gathered herself to leap atop the fence and then hop off on the other side before it had a chance to take damage from her weight or raking claws and talons. Then she proceeded to the door of the bar, left slightly ajar by the departing pea-brained giant, nosed it open and inserted herself partway in the door and gave an imperious half-screech.

Kaisa's answers to comments and musing speculations about the woman from the back room were brought to an abrupt halt. "Well, Mal... seems she saved us the trouble of going out to find her." He waved nonchalantly at the red-speckled black griffon with the small crest, recieved a trilling growl, and sighed. "Seems I'm being called away. Ah well... I'm sure I can get Nyhali to help me track you two down if I don't bump into you here again first."

He slid from the stool with an easy grace and sauntered over toward Silence. Part of his arm brushed Mal as he passed, but it was impossible to tell if it was intentional or not. He pulled a small pouch full of coins out and handed it to her. "Drinks are on me for the three gentlemen and the lady I was sitting with until that's gone or they leave. If anything's left you can keep it." He didn't keep a lot of spending money on him, but it ought to get Iris, Mal, Rem, and Meshach at least four rounds of whatever. Even water for Mr. I-don't-drink. Once again he spoke directly to Silence's face, if not any slower than he would have normally. It was hard to say if he suspected her hearing loss or if he was just being polite.

Another not-quite screech sounded behind him and he rolled his eyes and waved to the four as he exited. "I'll try to visit with you all again sometime when my griffon isn't threatening to dismantle the bar."

Meshach jumped at Tiamat's screech. Neither of Silence's griffins made noises like that. She had trained Trill at an early age not to do so, apparently, and Chade was not the type to screech.

"Until then," Meshach said, still somewhat shaken by his reaction to Tiamat's utterance. He hadn't realized a mere sound could be so alarming.

Silence read the man's words carefully, noticing that either by accident or by design he spoke so that he was readily understandable to her. She wondered if he could tell that she was deaf. If he could, he apparently didn't care. Either way, he could easily become her favorite person simply because she didn't have to guess at anything that he said.

"All right. Thank you," she said.

She hadn't heard the screech, though she had noticed the patrons reacting to something, and she had chanced to turn her head in the correct direction to see a clearly impatient griffin halfway into the bar. It seemed this man was being summoned.

She waited until he had exited to examine the pouch's contents. It was not an insignificant sum of money. She found a bit of charcoal and made a note on the bar which stated the amount and whose credit it went to (the people sitting around Meshach and Meshach), and then she hooked the pouch onto her belt, being unsure where Shane kept monies acquired during the day and having nowhere else to but the funds at the moment.

She supposed she ought to let the others know that their next several rounds were paid for, and so she walked over and did so. The pleased expression on Meshach's face did not reassure her one bit. She didn't approve of him being here at all, but she didn't let that show on her face. He was a customer of the paying variety, for the moment. Until Kaisa's funds ran out.

Meschach wasn’t the only one who was surprised by the sudden screech; Mal jerked a bit too, spilling a few drops of his drink. When glaring at the drops didn’t spontaneously make them go back into the glass, he glared at the gryphon instead. But, not for long; come on… glaring at gryphons just didn’t do anything, except make them pissed. Besides, she was a beautiful gryphon, even if he could only see her head. “As beautiful as she is impatient,” he said, looking away from the gryphon and looking back towards Kaisa.

Come on, the man couldn’t walk like that---all suave grace and elegance---and not expect to be watched. Besides, he had brushed against Mal; as far as he was concerned, that meant ‘meet you later’. Or something. Ah well, Kaisa earned some points by paying for the next few rounds of drinks.

“See, that’s why I left Aeron at home. See you later, Kaisa.”

Rem waved as well, although he had a horrible feeling about this. “You can stop staring now, Mal. He’s gone,” he said, deciding that it was about time for him to poke some fun at Mal for once.

Since he couldn’t think of a decent reply, Mal retaliated by sticking his tongue out instead. “Shut up, Rem. Don’t blame me just ‘cause you’ve got no taste for aesthetic values.”

Rem briefly considered bringing up the fact that their tastes clearly differed, but decided not to go down that path. Chances are, Mal would somehow bring the conversation around and make him blush or something. He always did anyway.

“Drink your damn booze,” he said, although it was kind of pointless as Mal would do that anyway. Being the type of person he was (and since he wasn’t distracted by manmeat like Mal was), he hadn’t missed out on Silence’s reaction---or lack thereof---to the gryphon’s shriek. That was a little weird… even Rem had jumped a little.

Pardon me, while I burst...
Iris had slipped out quietly before the 'festivities' - or, near brawls - had begun. Hey, everyone had to use the ladies' room at some point. When she entered again, though...something had, quite obviously, happened. She stood in the doorway for a moment, watching as Kaisa used a gold chain to interrupt what was promising to be the Penguin's first bar brawl. Awww, those were always fun to watch! As long as she wasn't involved. Oh, 'Little Miss' wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty, but if someone left some sort of scar on her? Or left a stain on her clothes? Or broke jewelry? Yeah. Shane probably wouldn't be too happy with the sort of hell that the Nefretiri daughter would unleash on the bar. Especially after her drink had already been stolen.

Blinking, and remaining silent, she watched until Kaisa decided to leave.....before deciding to enter back into the company of the other two. Mmmm, considering she was absent for what led up to a potential brawl, best to not ask. Not that Mal or Rem would do anything amongst themselves, but still. Striding confidently up to the bar again, she sighed and flicked her hair out of her face rather dramatically as an idea came to her. She carried through with that idea when she sat down next to Mal, grabbed his drink, and downed it like a professional. Hey, fruity though her drink may have been, she could handle the more serious stuff.

A smirk graced her lips when she set the glass back down. "Damn, Mal, you're right. That is good."
And rise above the flame.

Meshach listened to the interactions between Rem and Mal, and then Mal and the young woman. It was clear that they knew each other, and had for some time. In a way, if he were given to bouts of human feeling, it would have made him feel left out, but he was not given to such feelings. He was too accustomed to being unique and without anyone to talk to at all. He was quite able to take pleasure in a person's company while barely knowing them at all.

He directed a less-toothy-than-normal smile at the woman who had just stolen Mal's drink. One could almost have called it an approving smile, but he didn't want to push his luck. He wasn't, after all, friends with these men. They'd just gotten him out of an unpleasant situation. Jokes at their expense might not yet be appropriate.

"I don't believe we've met," he said to the dark-skinned woman, excercising a great deal more courtesy than he usually displayed. "I'm Meshach Draconne."

Silence watched the effeminate young man leave with his griffin. The griffin, of which she had only caught a glimpse, was stunning. And large, though she couldn't have said whether it was male or female from the brief look she was afforded. When the young woman joined Meshach's group she nodded to herself. That was who the young man who had just left had meant.

Mishu pushed open the door to the bar and cautiously stepped inside. It didn't look like the kind of bar she normally would frequent. It appeared less... upscale. Still, it was apparently the best place to drink in the city, and she'd gotten drunk in less respectable places.

She looked around, her eyes adjusting to the difference in the light. She stepped to the bar when she could see and ordered a whiskey. While she waited she turned to see who else was there.

Heh. Mal had yet to respond. That was amusing.

Iris gave a nod and a kind smile to Meshach. Whoever he was, he was part of whatever just happened that she missed...ah, well. Maybe asking for a story would not be a good idea. Didn't seem like anyone was in a good mood.

"Hello, Meshach. I am Iris Nefretiri...my apologies for just appearing out of nowhere, but...well, I have no excuse."

Her eyes flicked momentarily to the newcomer, but she did not yet speak to her. That would be rude to Meshach.

Silence was relieved that the order for whiskey was a simple order to fill and did so quickly While she was at it, she stopped by where Meshach and the others were seated and asked, "Can I get any of you anything more to drink?"

Meshach, before Silence's approach and question, shrugged, saying to Iris, "Excuses aren't necessary."

He had noticed the newcomer, but he was not in the habit of examining every person who entered whatever building he happened to occupy. He was not, after all, paranoid, and had no reason to worry about strangers. It was only people who knew him he had to worry about, and he had not worn a human form for centuries.

"If you'll excuse me," he said to Iris when Silence came by and asked about drinks. "I'd like a double shot of vodka, as pure proof as you have. And then can I talk to you?"

He looked directly into her face as he spoke and enunciated carefully, but he did not speak much slower than he usually did. Silence seemed interested in maintaining the illusion that she was not deaf, and he would rather not be the one who destroyed that for her. He didn't even know if her employer - he assumed she was employed here, though he had not yet gotten a chance to ask about it - knew she was deaf. She did seem quite competent and, well, normal.

Silence tilted her head in acquiescance. "After I've taken care of everyone's orders."

Mishu thanked the woman who gave her the whiskey and took a sip, still watching the room. The barmaid went over the a table with others around it. The mood seemed hesitant, and uneasy. Perhaps they weren't all friends? Then why were they drinking together. "Too curious, Mishu," she muttered and downed the rest of her whiskey. She set the glass down and signaled for another. It was the good stuff. She was surprised, since most places gave strangers the cheap stuff. They were right about this place.

Silence barely noticed the newest arrival's signal. Suddenly she realized that, maybe, this job wasn't such a good idea after all. She was not a servant, to go around asking if anyone wanted refills, but how was she to watch the entire bar and hope to catch any signal given? Well, she'd deal with that if it ever came up. In the mean time, she had work to do. She poured another glass of whiskey for the woman, and then brought it to her table.

She imagined she could feel Meshach's gaze following her, that she could feel him willing her to hurry up so that he could talk to her. She did not exist solely for him, contrary to what he might think. He would have to wait. It might be good for that ego of his, which had been getting more and more irritating. Not that he had ever been humble, but the last few days he'd been positively unbearable.

Mishu accepted the refill and gave her some extra coins gratefully. She worried about interrupted, but she had to admit that for some reason, she was intensely curious about the relationship between the barmaid and the man at the table. He watched her intently, and she seemed just a little ill at ease about it. She drank her whiskey and watched to see what else would happen.

Poor Mal was still in shock about his drink being stolen. He stared at the empty glass and then at Iris and then at the empty glass again. “You… took my drink…” he murmured, as if he couldn’t believe it. Apparently, he had already managed to forget that several moments ago, he had done the exact same thing to Iris. Or maybe he just really hadn’t expected her to take revenge.

Or maybe he just really, really needed his whiskey.

Rem snickered at Mal’s reaction and made very few half-hearted attempts to hide his delight at this newest twist. “Serves you right for drinking her drink, Mal,” he said mildly.

“But she was gone, so it doesn’t count…”

“Doesn’t count? You took her drink! How can that not count?”

“’Cause she wasn’t here.” The answer was prompt, succinct, and, as usual, it didn’t make very much sense.

“… I’m going to ignore you now.” It never actually worked, but Rem felt he had to say it. Or at least say something in response to that nonsensical answer from Mal.

Mishu continued to watch the scene. At another table was a more engaging couple. There were smiles and some laughter. That held more promise. She asked for two more whiskeys and took them over to the table, offering one to the man called Mal. "Not right to take a person's whiskey," she said. "May I have a seat?"

This was Mal’s lucky day! People just kept giving him free drinks, which endeared him even further to this bar. First the nice bartender lady had given him a free drink, and then Kaisa, and now this! A smarter person would have said ‘no thanks’, for concern of getting drunk. Mal simply grinned at the stranger and waved her towards a seat.

“For a free drink, I’d let you sit in my lap!” He took the whiskey eagerly and sipped at it. Mmm… whiskey… “The name’s Malcolm Lansing, or Mal if you don’t feel like pronouncin’ the rest of it. The lady is Iris Nefretiri. Don’t leave your drink too close to her; she’ll take it. And this man here is Remiel Quillan! He’s the official puppy of the group.”

Rem went back on his promise to not speak to Mal right then and there. “Wait, puppy? What the Hell, Mal, just what the Hell?”

“Well, you’ve got those big puppy dog eyes. Makes sense to me. ‘Sides, we already voted on it. You’re the puppy.”

“Oh, come on! Who voted?”

“I did.”

Rem waited patiently for Mal to continue to list off who voted. That was kind of stupid of him… by the time a five second silence had lapsed, he realized that Mal was the only one who had ‘voted’. “Why do I even talk to you?” he asked.
