They pressure-washed my deck today so I really need to get with it now & make my big jungle-y deck garden again like it used to be, with tree frogs living in the water dishes & all. biggrin If I make it green, shady & damp, they will come...and eat bugs for me!
I got my unemployment info about how much I'll get for the next 26 weeks & if I want taxes withheld & if I want it direct deposited. I'm not mad about writing my account & routing numbers on a form that will be lying aroung in offices & all, though. No word back on the TAA yet.

I'm surprised how fast it's slowing down, given that Chambers was hiring not long ago! eek If they knew this was going to happen, why would they hire people? Have you suddenly lost a client recently? Having Heilig-Meyers and the Sears Home Store both go under after 9-11 (when nobody was buying furniture) was a big kick in the head to our business. When I was hired in August of '01, they were going full blast, 7 days a week. It was only like that again once...when we had all the orders from the closed Pageland plant to catch up because they got real slack and didn't stay on schedule after they knew they were going to close. Once that was caught up, we never got 7 days again. A year later, they shut down 3rd shift...and you know the rest.

Why wouldn't your supervisor want to let you come in for the other person? You been getting more extra hours than the others, or are you just on your supervisor's bad side? mrgreen

So how's it going at Chambers, Tommy?
I talked yesterday to a friend who was my first warper partner back when I worked on the normal beam warpers. She still had contact with people still working at Culp. They seem to think July will be the end now.
It's been almost a month since the last day I worked & I still haven't seen any unemployment. rolleyes And after them saying I wouldn't have to call in or make contacts, they turned around and said I WOULD. :X How the heck can I do that? I don't WANT a job right now! The 5-week course I'm starting with in the TAA doesn't begin 'til mid-June...that's the next available one. There are a lot of people going through the TAA system these days. As I now understand it, once I'm properly into the TAA program I'll get TRA money which will be the same amounts as unemployment, and that's when I won't have to do call-ins & stuff any more. I wish they had made that clear from the start.

How do I know if they're hiring or not? gonk So far I've just been answering the call-in questions. Luckily, not one of them is "did you make contacts?" so I haven't lied. I was available & I didn't turn down work.
Hitting the office staff isn't necessarily the last step. They cut way back on our front office staff about 2 years before the big layoffs started on the floor. A lot of the office & supervisors ended up doubling up on other jobs. They also were doing rolling layoffs for a long time, trying to keep the place going. If you ask me, those are good priorities--keeping the workers ought to be first priority over keeping a full front office.

They don't do checks now, they do either direct deposit or debit cards--the latter are through Wachovia & can get a ton of fees stuck on them if you don't read up & be careful. The TAA guy at the ESC recommended just taking all the funds out & putting them in your account.

Sounds grim, guys. Eirwyn knows this already, but I lost my textile job over 5 years ago. Last year, they imploded the building and put up a shopping center.
