It was getting late now, the lights slowly flickering out of existence, one by one, until just a handful remained, small glowing stars hovering in the darkness of the large, sterile complex, lighting the work area for those committed enough to still be awake and working. Hoping to get a reply to her communication she’d sent out earlier, Lorna had stayed later than her normal shift- though she didn’t even know what a normal shift was anymore. She practically lived at the G.I.B. as it was- hell, she even brought extra clothes just in case. Now changed into a simple black dress, Lorna blew a strand of matching hair from her eyes in a heavy sigh, looking at the blurry screen. Still no word from any agents about her memo. Not one. Disappointed with her lack of responses and lack of information after hours of work, she dragged herself from her chair, wandering toward the main lobby of the Gaians in Black complex. As she walked through the nearly empty building, she glanced off to the right and caught a glimpse of a few people in the cafeteria, and pondered a moment about joining them. The notion faded quickly, though… she didn’t want to intrude.

Shoulders sagging slightly, she turned her attention to the shining, dark ebony grand piano that made the corner of the G.I.B. lobby its home. Most of the time, the only attention it received was an occasional dusting, and was mostly there for show so it seemed, as if having it were some sort of high-class status symbol.

A faint, heartfelt smile tugged at Lorna’s lips, her feet diverting toward the instrument, pulling her away from the café. Lowering herself onto the padded stool, she ran her fingers over the soft white ivory of the keys, savoring the sensation. Through all the fuzziness that was her past, this was one thing she remembered.

Quietly, as not to disturb anyone, she pressed upon the keys with a delicacy and fervor that defied her dutiful, dedicated personality. If you asked her what she was playing, she couldn’t tell you, but all she knew was the melody was sorrow and joy, hope and despair, and it was simply beautiful. Eyes closed, she moved with the music, and for the first time in a long time, she looked genuinely happy.

The room wasn't very large, and it was pure metal all around with small cameras that saw every angle, even under the simple metal table and two metal chairs that were on either side of the table. Ricepaper sat in one of these chairs. She was alone in the room, having fallen asleep after her last interview. Her arms were folded on the table and her jacket was bundled on top of her arms, and this she used as a make-shift pillow. Her dark glasses had fallen off her face and lay on the table next to her. Her green and blue hair fell askew across her face over fair skin. Her lips were parted slightly and she was fast asleep.

"You aren't taking the bus? Why not?" a familiar voice, sounding strange and sleepy in the early-morning phone call, echoed from a time long since passed.
"My dad doesn't want me to wait in the rain," a young voice replied, just as tired, into the phone.
"That's silly. Does he think you're made of sugar and ricepaper?"
"Yeah, I'll melt."

Agent Ricepaper shifted uneasily in her sleep, burying her face in her black monotonous coat.

"Mm?"
V lifted his eyes and the pictures vanished within the next couple of seconds. He shifted in his seat to lean back further and level his gaze at Kaos.
"Well maybe if you offer more." He chuckled and then shook his head, shaking the morbid smile from his face, though the look did not quite leave his eyes. "Just being nostalgic. Or something close to it."
He absent-mindedly reached for a smoke, having forgotten the last of the pack had been finished off in the heat of this morning's activities.

In the cafeteria SK44 had just finished his lemonade. Then he noticed Lorna walking by the doorway and continuing on past the cafeteria. Interested, he followed her. When she got to the lobby and went to the piano and started playing, he sat down in the shadows and listened quietly.

Lorna didn't even notice she had an audience. To her, all that existed was the piano and the music, and she could hardly even register that she had begun to sing softly, not knowing what she was saying or playing, but just satisfying the music's endless thirst. Manicured nails clicked gently on the white keys, moving over them flawlessly, as if she were born doing what she was doing now. She looked so natural, so herself- more so than when just talking to her on a day to day basis. This was her true calling- one not even the G.I.B. could replace.

Ricepaper woke up with a groan. Wiping tears out of her eyes, she somberly got to her feet, put her glasses in her pocket and took her jacket and breifcase out of the room. It was times like these she wished she wasn't found so early. She wished she had just a few more years with the people she swore to protect.

Ignoring those thoughts, as she left the room, music reached her ears. This was certainly strange, and so she decided to go see what it was. Raising an eyebrow, it turned out to be one of her superiors, Lorna, on the piano. Before she even realized it, Ricepaper was smiling. Her jacket and briefcase were on the ground as the fingers of her left hand drummed lightly on her left palm and her right hand subtly moved side to side. She was going back to when she played the violin.

Suddenly she yearned once more for the feel of strings under her fingers and a bow in her hand. Knowing there was no violin nearby, she instead went over and stood by the piano, and closed her eyes. She began to sing along with Lorna, her voice even quieter than the superior agent's. Then, without realizing it, Ricepaper lifted her arms and began to play an imaginary violin in the air, her face content.

Startled by the sudden addition of a voice and person, Lorna almost stopped playing, blue eyes startled into awareness. But, upon landing upon the younger girl, she softened, mouth merely displaying a smile as she continued to sing, Ricepaper’s younger voice adding a complementary harmony to her own mature, rich alto tones. It was a pleasant ensemble to hear, really, a welcome distraction from all the fuss over recent end-of-the-world type events. It connected with the human souls of all agents, the part that remembered what it was like not be an agent, but to be a young, free spirit in the world, careless and tireless. The piano was still in good tune for having done nothing but sit for so long, and the notes gradually began to grow in volume along with Lorna’s smoky voice, as the music called for intensity of sound.

Sitting in the shadows, SK44 began to smile through his normally emotionless demeanor. The music took him back to his days of living outside ever since he had run away from home as a kid. Even now he still liked to go outside at night and watch the stars.

"I suppose, but then again, I'm thinking we only have part of the story at our hands right now. Anything done only partly will seem strange, but I'm hoping Lorna can find something that will give us a better idea of what to expect. Then again.... There's no way to even tell if the stars have anything to do with that meteor."
A grimace passed over his face as he realized that indeed, he was out of smokes. He shrugged, obviously trying to pass it off like it didn't matter, and tapped his fingers on the table.

Agent Oxide woke up slumped against the wall of the tracking room. Jeez, I really can sleep anywhere, anytime, she thought to herself.

Noticing that everybody else had left without waking her, she realized she hadn't eaten yet today, so she walked back towards the cafeteria. Walking in she went over to the buffet and picked up a veggie sub. Taking it over to a table she sits down, and starts eating.

Brail couldn't think because of the noise. He covered his ears trying to think, but it wouldn't work. It was pretty music, he admitted. But it was really disturbing his work. It wasn't exactly his work he just wanted to help. As he was trying to think he heard another person sing along. "I'm just hoping that everyone doesn't start to sing along." Brail said to himself only because noone else was in the room.

Not wanting to disturb Lorna and Ricepaper, SK44 quietly got up and went outside to watch the stars and think.
