a mauser is a WWII gun. I'm asking Nospai if his reference is a WWI gun, though the fact he said axis makes me think WWII... I'm just not really into it.. I'm still tired.

no, it was invented for paratroopers... it was the first full-auto weapon to keep the rough size and weight of a large submachinegun while using rounds larger than the 9mm parabellum and smaller than a rifle or (heavy) machinegun round.
it was late in the war. it is WWII, and axis, i mean Germany.

Technically, WWI had assult rifles, if you want to quiver over details. But It's not worth the fight.
Crap... Um... s**t... Can't think straight.
Not an MP-42, not a Wieger... definately not a steyer. I'd almost say FG-42, but no... Of course, If I guess it and skip over it, its probably due to the modifications...
MP-40 perhaps? designed back in WWI, but never used, until it found an application in WW2? And yes, it was an assault rifle...
That's the earliest i can think of.

Its gotta be a MP-40. That's the closest thing I can think of...
If it isn't, then its too modified to be recognised by anything...
