In marching season, we're allowed to use them during practice only. But on football nights, it's a definite 'No'.

Funny how much hate there is for flute lyres.
The name they use for the ones we have (I don't know if it's just a name used by the company or what) is the Flutist's Best Friend.
Which I believe is misrepresentation, because I really don't like that thing. stressed

Our band uses them for practice and stands, not that it matters much to me, I memorize all my music.
But taking them out on the field? Definite no-no. And the freshman complain every year.

Now I'm on sax, so I get to use the nifty little sax lyre (well, it's actually a bass clarinet lyre since they were out of sax ones, but whatever) that actually attachs to the instrument rather than cutting off the circulation in your friggin' ARM. gonk

hm... I don't believe our band department even owns lyres...
not even an option for us. Memorize the music or you're out of the band. Thats it. I really like that, I think that using the lyres makes you too dependent on what it written not wise and takes away from concentration on marching AND style... as well as tempo, because its hard enough to watch the drum major...
(but seriously, just listen to the drum line... in our band most of the time the drum major just takes the tempo from the basses)

I'm Special because I play in a normal band! I live in canada where there are no marchings! The only march we did, was one song because we wanted to try it and our teacher was eager about it....
aren't I special!

to be perfectly honest, I think lyres are just, well, really bad, if you need a lyre then you're giving up, half the fun in marching band it the music, and were's the fun of the music if it's not memorized

Seeing as our 8th grade band was invited to join a nearby high school marching band for one night, it was pretty unexpected and most of the high schoolers gave us their lyre's. When I join marching band, I'm going to memorize since they lyre's for flutes are all bouncy like and leave horrible marks on your arms. gonk
