I'm currently pondering the idea of making a loli-ish furisode thats in the Gosuloli vol. 6
I'm just cant find an obi that would look good with the fabric DDX I so suck at picking out obis, everything else I'm good at but not obis.
I'm thinking of this fabric link <3
D: its pretty expensive but I think I would wear it for my 18th b-day X3 gah so close (sorta...)

Cool. :] While I was buying a kimono, the lady was saying you should always get an obi the same color as the least prevalant color in the kimono fabric.

So either blue or green?

O: neat. I was thinking gold or whiteish. I have been looking through some kimono magazines and most of the pink kimonos have had gold, cream, or peachish obis <3

I'm currenlty making a skirt from a GL Bible for my friends little sister, as well as working on a black peasant dress for myself (since my main wardrobe is more western gothic with a bohemiean twist than it is loli... though I do love going full out EGA sometimes! ^_^)

Okay, gals. I'm in a bit of a pickle, here. I have an idea for a dress but don't know how to go about it. I know how to mock up the pattern I want, but there are a few details that I'm unsure of which I need to decide on before I can begin.

So here goes:

The dress itself is going to be a relatively casual lolita style. I want it to combine a peasant blouse and a sun dress. The original inspiration of the dress comes from a sun dress that used to be my mother's. I'm going to keep many of the elements of the dress itself the same, and add a few details of my own.

    User Image
This is the front of the original dress.
I plan on keeping the shoulder ties as a decorative element, and the general shape of the bodice.

The questions I have about the front at the moment are the most important to the style it will end up having in the end.

    1) Do I use lace and ribbon, as in the original or do I use mini-pleats or ruffles in my contrasting color fabric in its place?

    2) Do I make the dress one color all around, or use both of my colors in combination? [one color for the center panels, the other for the rest of the dress; one color for the entire dress with small accents of the other]

    3) I want to add cap or small puff sleeves--should I have to alter the shape of the neckline in order to do this? Should I not bother trying to do said sleeves at all? If I do put the sleeves on, should I remove the shoulder ties, alter them slightly, or let them stay as I had planned? Keep in mind that I haven't actually made up the pattern and am open to any of those options.

    User Image
This is the back of the original dress.
I am definitely going to use the faux smocking shown because it will allow me to get in and out of the dress without having to add a zipper or other closures. My question about this detail is simple!

Do I use an elastic thread [like the original dress] or sew lines of thin elastic to the back of the material? I'm leaning more towards the elastic thread since it'll give the faux smocking a nicer look, but I've never used either and would love some feedback on that.

Also, here are the fabrics I currently have at my disposal:
    User Image
I was planning on making the dress in the green colored fabric with the yellow, floral pattern as the accent color. I'm concerned that all that floral design might be a bit too much, though.

I also have a solid yellow cotton broadcloth that I can use, but it's considerably thinner than either of the other two [they're actually a quilting stock cotton]. Any advice on this? Should use what I have, or should I seek out another fabric all together?

[edit]: I tried another fabric color. Sadly, I didn't have enough to make a long skirt so it's sort of turned into a tunic-top. Here're a few photos, worn with an experimental skirt I made a while back. Hahaaaaaaa ... yeah, I'm beginning to think I ought to give up trying to sew.

    User Image
It needs to be ironed, yet--but the front still needs help. I'm going to have to do a double layer for the little hang-over flaps, I think, instead of just hemming them loosely. They sort of curl funny.

I am kind of pleased with the pleats, though I want to make that front panel smaller in the next round. I've decided to make a nice, thick sash to wear around the waist [probably one in maroon and one in black], though--I didn't like how the little ties turned out and removed them.

    User Image
The smocking didn't turn out so badly for a first try. I had some issues keeping the elastic tight [hooray for teeth!] but I got it to work out okay in the end.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions for things that I might be able to try? Should I just scrap this idea and start over from scratch without the sun dress inspiration?

[edit]: Okay, so far I've heard "the fabric's too busy", more or less and that's it. XD
Anyone else have some input?

Boco: I think it's a lovely design. Personally, I realike that green fabric and if you just use some simple lace and maybe pink ribbon, it will turn out nicely.

The smocking looks great for a first try. [I haven't even tried, I'm so afraid I'll ruin it. xDD] I think small puff sleeves would be really cute, but even just using the shoulder ties is fine, you just need to wear a blouse or something under it.

I sooo want to see pictures when you're done!

Well, I'm going out to get more fabric, thread and some yarn for my mom today [hooray!] so I can add the ruffles to make the maroon dress a decent length. I'm also going to try out some elastic thread and see how that goes. Eek.

Wish me luck! Should be able to show off a more finished dress tonight.

It looks like you're on the right track for that dress. I bet it will be cute. Maybe you should coordinate it with black instead of white [like with the sash], it will be cuter imo, but I bet it could be great either way if accessorized right. :3

With the maroon one, I'm thinking definitely black--it'll look really cute with my mary janes or boots, I think. With the green one, though, probably white. It's a bit too sweet and frilly-girlie to go well with black, I think.

Also, sadly, not one fabric store had the right broadcloth. JoAnn's is restocking and coulding find it, and Hobby Lobby was a mess. They're reorganizing because they just expanded, and the only black broadcloth that they had was more of a charcoal color than actual black. =/

I even tried WalMart in my desperation--but alas, they had nothing. Just some 100% polyester garbage that felt sort of slimy.

I guess I'll start on the underskirt and pattern for the second dress, huh?

Aw. I usually hit up JoAnns, because it's a super store in the mall here, lawlz. I once found some really really nice black fabric, It was a step up from broadcloth, but not too high end. I sadly can't remember where I found it, only that it was by the quilting fabric and the muslin.

Speaking of which, I need to go to joannes to get some muslin to make a mock up of a dress I'm making. First dress ever. I really really hope I don't mess it up, lol.

I guess you should start on the under skirt, I mean, it gives you some time so that Hobby Lobby or wherever can situate themselves and maybe JoAnn's can get the right fabric.

The JoAnn's near my house is pretty atrocious.
They rarely have anything that I need when I go in aside from patterns, and a lot of their materials are really, really pricey. I did find a spiffy material back when my friend and I made our fairy costumes [I'll have to see if I can find photos of those later, they were adorable!] that was a dark brown with gold vines, but that's ... really about it.

Hobby Lobby has the basics most of the time, but I was really shocked that they didn't have black broadcloth. I almost bought it in calico, but then I decided that the texture was wrong compared to the other materials I have. Ah well.

So far, the underskirt is nothing but a pile of tiered ruffles. XD
I'm trying to sort out how to finish up the back, whether I want a psuedo bustle or not, whether I want the longest layer to have pleating like the others or just lace trim to stick out under the rest, and whether I want to put a zipper or just button fastening.

I really should have planned this out a bit better. ^_^;

Ah. The JoAnns near me is pretty good, though I try to go when they have sales. Plus, I've got a best friend who's mom is the Manager, so I can get stuff for employee discount from her and then just pay her back, lol.

I've never seen a Hobby Lobby, well, not in Michigan.

Planning things out is usually a good thing to do, Oh well though. At least you can plan before working on the green one, right?
I think doing a zip would work best, with a hook and eye closure? Or a button, if you're going for simplicity. Lol
PostPosted: Thu Jul 19, 2007 12:22 am

I was figuring on them for a could reasons, here goesssss:

Button - Simpler to attach, open and close; more easily hidden--I'll have the pseudo-bustle, a petticoat and overskirt or shirt to conceal the opening; requires less expense since I already have white buttons; less issues with the tiered layering.

Zipper - More secure in terms of closure; concealed by the vertical nature of the pleating/ruffles; can work in combination with more discreet closings like hooks.

So it's kind of a tough choice. Uhm.

Photobucket's being a snitty little pain in the neck, so I had to upload photos to my webserver. Which lead me to the discovery that my .coms are down. D'oh. I'll have to talk to my host about that later--ahem. I'll just link directly to them.

Oh well--that's what it's for, right? Anyway, here are a few late-night photos.

The skirt so far, spread on a chair. It's a simple circle skirt with pleats attached to the hem as evenly as I could manage it. I'm going to add a third tier and waist band above that already shown so that the pleats overlap with the very top of the row already in place.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

A close-up of the pleats themselves. I did my very best to keep them straight and even. >_<
I need to put it on tomorrow and pin it to make sure that they do indeed fall straight. I've sort of pinned it on to make sure the length is where I wanted [right about the knees, so hopefully not much higher with a petti under it] but I wasn't too scrupulous about checking the details at the time.

The two tiers already in place that I mentioned--debating whether the undermost part should be trimmed in just plain lace to peek out from underneath the pleats, more pleats [which seems too puffy-messy to me] or simply hemmed up underneath.

A final shot with the sun dress so far. I'm going to add the maroon trim/bottom portion to the dress sometime this weekend, hopefully. I'm probably going to end up doing either a plain gather trimmed at the top with those tighttight pleats like along the bodice, or longer pleats like with the skirt. Also, I'm going to make a white sash so that I can wear the two together with a white blouse and shoes.

Working on this skirt has made me ponder anew whether I want WHITE and green, or the pale yellow and green together. Also, it has made me go and stare at lace in the sewing department with a horrible frown, trying to figure things out. XD

    [EDIT!]: I've finished the skirt!

I've decided to go with the button closure [for the photos, I used a broach. I'm wayway too tired to try a buttonhole tonight. Eesh]. Anyway. I put an extra layer of pleats on the bottom tier, and skipped out on the third. It's definitely full enough already, and will be even more so once I get that sun dress on top of it. :3

Which, by the way, should be done tomorrow some time. I have found ... the color of maroon I need. DUN DUN DAAAAAA! ...

    Anyway.

Sans sash, sans bottom layer of ruffles. You can see the extra ruffles I was messing with for bustle-ness. I ended up scrapping that idea because of how full the skirt already is.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The black sash is just there to show the general shape that the skirt will take when I put the correct, white sash on the dress.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The skirt all alone, draped on a chair--you can see that no button/buttonhole has been made, yet.

Bocco: That skirt looks good so far! I bet the green version is going to look cute. I'd suggest white lace and if you want, light pink ribbon to give it a bit more colour. xD;

I can't seem to find a suitable pattern for a skirt. They're all too poofy or have pleats. I hate pleats. D: I can't sew them.

So, if anyone has a skirt pattern from a GLB or GosuRori or whatever, telll meeee. D; I've heard stuff like 'Trapazoid' and stuff when people talk about those skirt patterns. Maybe I could draft one up if I had a picture or somm'n...idkkk.
