The reason the Bible is being referenced in this argument is because the majority of people who believe that animals don't have souls are Christians. I need to pull out some statistics to support that, but based on my general experience, and the opinions of those who have responded, it seems to be the general trend that the animal-soul argument and Christianity go hand in hand.

I'm glad to see the diversity of comments on this, though. I was pleased to see both sides of the spectrum. I am a person who is on the fence in this issue. I'm extremely fascinated by religion, and have bits and pieces of multiple religions lumped together in my belief system, but I'm generally leaning towards all things possessing souls. I mean, in my opinion, it's either we all possess one, or we all don't possess one. I don't think it's fair to assume that because we are smarter and have a larger brain that we automatically possess something that hasn't been proven that other animals do not. I think it's rather selfish and naive to think that, but that's my opinion.

As far as blondes4naruto's statement, I disagree. I guess I'm not so well versed in what a soul actually is... Take that back, I just skimmed through a large article on Wikipedia on what a soul is defined as. Unless I skimmed past it, or misinterpreted it, it doesn't mention that the soul is in charge of ethics, or as you pointed out "right from wrong." I'll admit that animals only run from you after being caught on the kitchen counter because they know that a negative punishment will follow; not that what they did was wrong. However, I think morals and ethics are more along the lines of our more developed brains, not what comprises our souls. Ethics are what is defined by culture and society; what is wrong in one place may be right in another place. Animals, oblivious to our language, culture, and byways, have no idea what these ethics are, and can only go by what they are accustomed to in their own "culture." I think that's a poor choice of words, but let's go with it. I was going to use an example I made up, but realized it would be pointless as it wasn't fact, so I'm going to stop rambling.

My opinion is that just because animals don't share the same ideas we do, thoughts, ethics, religions, and all that other human garbage, doesn't mean that they can't possess a soul. Because we can't understand them is a definite sign that we will never know what goes on through their heads, if anything. I think it is possible, though, that we all don't possess a soul, as a soul is a term that humans have come to adapt and twist its meaning until we're not really sure what it is and no one can come to an agreement on its true definition. So, I guess I'm still on the fence in this one. I feel like I just typed all this for nothing. But yeah, at least I provided a link!

Meh.

My one and only problem with this whole topic is the fact religion will always be a key player to what people believe in -- based on what religious affinity you're raised with, or if none at all, you'll have an organized manner of morals and ideals to follow. I was a bit upset the Bible was being referrenced because, as I said, it shouldn't be something we place on the same planes of being a good referrence like non-religious books and websites. Different interpretations and different outlooks on the purpose of the text, period, eliminates it from being the primary source of backup to anyone's argument.

You can't prove animals have souls until you capture one in a jar or observe it just die. Until then, you'll be swamped with what you've gotten so far; which seems to please you nontheless.

Yes, animals have souls. They have feelings, too, while we're at it.
I noticed that most humans just don't want to face the fact that we are descendents of monkeys. We want to tell ourselves that we're so superior than the other animals and that we are the only animals with souls and feelings.

Except that we're not descendants of monkeys. We all came from a similar ancestor, but we are completely different in evolutionary branching than monkeys or other primates. It's a common misconception that we came from monkeys.

Person A: "Hey, if we came from monkeys, then why are there still monkeys around?"

Person B: "Because we didn't come from monkeys."

The evolutionary chart with the ape becoming erect? Wrong. Hell, we're not even in the same family as Neandertals, nor homo erectus. We've all branched off several times until we are what we are. There is some debate, however, that we may have come from a primitive primate known as australopithecus, or Lucy, the recovered child skeleton from Africa. But regardless, we did not come from monkeys.

Whatever. We ARE animals anyway, and I noticed that I lot of people don't want to face that.

I didn't mean to upset you with that post. Sorry if I did.

But yes, I see where you're coming from.

If humans have souls then animals do too.

As to the existence of souls in the first place...

Love comes from the soul, not entirely from the heart right? Yes. Love is an emotion and emotion is from the soul. Great example here, thanks from Animal Planet

I was watching Miami Animal Police and it showed two dogs in a middle of a free way on a grass area, one of the dogs was dead and the other seemed to be defending the body of it, they thought it was a Mother defending the pup, but soon they were to find out it was a Male, they were surprised, of course.
Eventually they caught the dog, they went to the deceased animal and it was a Female, not a Mother or a pup. A companion, most likeably love.
She was fully grown and was hit by a car, this dog was tested and he seemed upset but eventually adopted, with a new life.

Also research found that the Male dog had been shot and survived, and still it bonded with humans so well. Amazing.

So by this, it made me believe even more animals have souls.

That's like my grandmothers dogs. They saw these dogs on this bridge near their home. So they called some people to let them know... I guess someone had abandoned a bike and the dogs wouldn't leave the bike. They set up a trap with the bike near it and food inside. The caught one of the dogs and the other slept by the trap and never left the other dogs side. My grandma thought if they were to be taken to an animal shelter they might get separated so she kept them 3nodding They are such sweet gorgeous dogs!

I came across a topic like this in ED earlier, so I thought I'd bring it up here. Do you think animals have souls?

I do realize by this being an animal guild, most of you will probably agree with me that they do have souls, so to expand on this subject, why do you think other people don't believe so?

Personally I think religion has a lot to do with it. Most Christians believe that animals do not have souls, I think because it is in the Bible that it is not so. I'm not exactly sure on that, but I've heard from another source.
hehehe I would have to agree with that... but it's not just because I love animals... they have to have a soul.. everything does and soul=spirit and I believe in spirits.. and reincarnation.. meaning you *points* could have been an animal in a past life ^^ lol

but! I also believe in having a guardian animal... you have one for life and every next life you have you get a new one just for that ... ^^ I love mine ^^ ... and I've seen one of them reincarnated O.O ^^ they were my pet barn cat .. hey what can I say.. guardian they have to watch over you somehow ^^
