"December," he repeated, nodding absently. It was, what, July? No wonder he hadn't noticed it last time. She was pregnant. He wasn't quite sure what to make of it just yet. It was a good thing, correct? She was going to have a baby... She had the beginnings of a new life for herself on the island all set out. But would the transformations effect the child? At that, would it even survive them?
He cleared his throat, smiling once more and searching for a new topic. For some reason, it felt decidedly awkward sitting alone in a room on a bed beside a pregnant woman, even moreso knowing the child was some other man's. Not that he had ever thought of Natsumi in that sense, but with this newly gleamed knowledge everything felt...off.
It was her age, he decided. She was, what, maybe 20? No on that young should be having a baby. That was all. That was the only reason he was unsettled. Yes. Good. "...What're you reading?" he asked, grabbing hold of the new subject and reaching past her for the book.

Hm.. What was that saying she'd heard? The air was so thick you could cut it? Yes, that was it... She beleived that saying applied to this exact moment. "Mm..." she confirmed the month december... Letting it fall into silence there. Part of her wanted to ask if he was mad or thought she was horrible... But the other part very much feared he would tell her yes. So she kept it to herself.
"Hm? Oh!" her smile returned once more at the opportunity for a topic change. With that she pulled the book back over, showing off the cover of the novel "A popular American novel... Harry Potter..." she stumbled on the fictonal boy's name, then frowned at it "It is.. a bit confusing..." She admitted, the names and new words the book seemed to pull out of nowhere were constantly throwing her for a loop. Atleast it was helping her vocabulary...

"Are you really?" Chuckling, he gestured to the book for permission, then lifted it from her lap, lazily flipping through a few pages. "It's originally British, t' be honest, but that's about all I know of it. I've never read it m' self." As well known as it was, the concept of the book, from what he had heard, had never quite appealed to him. He rarely had the patience to sit still and read in recent years especially. When he did, it was various things that had been recommended by friends. Harry Potter was not on that list.
"What's confusin' about it?" Where in some context the phrase could have been taken as in insult, it was clear that he was genuinely curious. True, he hadn't read the book, but he may be able to clear up a few things that didn't relate to the actual plot.

"Oh?" Natsumi looked at the book as if it would confirm what he had said... Thoguhs he found it interesting it was British, but popular in America... Hm. "Well..." she leaned over so she could see the book, flipping through a few pages to find the one she had ended on, holding herself with one hand and flipping pages with the other. The ones before had taken a bit of time to figure out, but she had atleast gotten something... Finding the page, she pointed to a few of the words they were using for magic. "This.. and what does it mean by this?" she then moved a bit higher on the page. "Why would this be speaking?"

"Well, this is the American edition," he assured her with a nod. "But the author's British, and th' book originally was." He really didn't see the point of making an 'American' edition. If they could figure out the meanings of simple words, they shouldn't be reading the bloody book. He held the book over for her to flip through it, drawing it closer once she pointed out the section to search for an answer. "Th' words themselves don't mean much. They're spells. Probably latin based t' make more sense or some such. Nothin' y' need t' worry about. Speaking..." He frowned faintly, skimming the page and flipping back to skim the one before it. "I s'pose pictures can talk. With everythin' else these books imply, it wouldn't surprise me. It is fiction, after all."

"Oh.." she smiled some, nodding to his explination... Tht made sense, and as long as she didn't have to worry about them then that was good. The whole American edition thing didn't make sense to her either... Moreso on the fact that both spoke english, wasn't it the same language? Either way, she seemed a bit excited to have her own personal translator. "And isn't a troll a un-pretty woman? How would that be dangerous...?" Speaking of trolls... "Aa. I have another... Even more confusing..." She stood, moving over to a drawer to pull out box. It was brightly colored, looking obviously like a birthday present or some sort. "The books were from my friends." She noted, as she pulled out the last book from the bottum. A rather familiar cover on it. "What is an elves? Or a dwarves... I thought this was a drawer..." She pointed to the thing she had just gotten her box out of "But this moves and speaks..." With that she passed the book to him, looking back at the box when it made a noise.
She peered inside, pulling out a tiny book hardly the size of her hand. "Eh?" she stated aloud, setting the box down to inspect the little book. "I did not see this..." She trailed off as the pages opened, she squinted, trying to make sense of the fleshy blob... Then it clicked. The Thom-monster was back aparntly as she gave a rather loud squeak, fumbling witht eh little book then tossing it in whatever direction she could. Covering her blushing face as it smacked into the wall behind Thom, ending it's journy on her bed. Through mufled hands she started speaking... something. "Aaa! Houtou baka da! Megumi to Ami wa BAKA da!" Apparently she had forgotten Thom was even there for the moment. It was JUST like them to pull something like that...
The front of the little dual colored book read the words "Kama Sutra Pocket Edition."

He chuckled, snapping the book and shaking his head. "In some cases, per'aps, but th' troll books like this mean are monsters. Big deformed people type things. Ugly, smelly, not very bright. T' say someone's a troll means they're like those monsters, which is what people mean when they call women that." His eyes followed her as she moved to retrieve the box of books, and he set Harry Potter aside to inspect the next, smile brightening. "Ahh, I know this one."
What boy hadn't read Lord of the Rings? Admittedly, it had been years since he had picked up one of these books, but they had been some of his favorites growing up. "Elves are another mythical creature. Like people in appearance, but taller, very elegant. An' they 'ave pointed ears. Dwarves are kind of th' opposite. They're short, stocky, big beards. Miners an' metalworkers an' th' like. I'm surprised the 'obbits didn--"
He abruptly fell silent as a small book flew past him, looking up from Lord of the Rings to be greeted by another of those stares. He raised a brow, glancing after the book, and actually jumped slightly as she because rambling in Japanese. Bemused, he leaned over to retrieve the book. A glance at the front cover heralded another long silence, and then he just tossed his head back and laughed.

"Aa.." she smiled, releived by the explination. That made more sense... And the word troll did have to come from somewhere, she had just never known where.
She had caught most of the explination on elves and dwarves, but the rest of his comments were lost in the moment.
She squeaked as Thom reached for the book she'd thrown, his presence abruptly came back... "Aa!" Nope, No stopping it... He had the book in his hands. He was looking at it... Her face turned bright red. "Wa... I... My frie--" She was cut off by him.. laughing? She blinked, her face caught between anger, pouting, or embaressment. Not that she was actually mad at her friend's joke... Just a bit flustered... And she could have ran into it at a much better time than this. So she simply stood there, staring at him and trying to figure out what exactly was so funny.

Thom was in fits. Apparently he gotten much more out of Natsumi's friends' joke than the poor girl had. If ever he had had a candid camera moment on the island, this was it. Here she was, Natsumi: soft spoken, innocent, perfect little Japanese girl. But a second glance, and he was sitting on her bed, she had learned to play soccer, she was pregnant, and she was probably the only Islander with the 'Kama Sutra Pocket Edition' in their possession.
Catching her perplexed stare, he simply laughed once more, falling back to lay with his legs hanging off the bed. Picking up the small book, he lazily flipped through a few pages, chuckling all the while, then waved it at her in almost an accusing manner. "It would be th' pregnant woman who owns th' Kama Sutra."

Natsumi only flushed more when his laughign restarted itself, then he was.. flipping through it?! She cringed, for whatever reason she didn't want him looking at that... Atleast not in her bed... Oh man, the awkwardness of that only made her blush more, even throwing her heartrate up. He was practically looking at porn right in front of her.
She covered her face when he spoke again, trying to hide the burning blush she could feel was there. "N-No!" She squeaked, her voice hitting a pitch of embaressment. "M-Megumi... She..." She stuttered, almost reluctant to fighting it. It was true she was pregnant, and as such her personal life had been set out for the world to see. But even if she did seem like a slut, she wasn't really... Was she? "Megumi jokes... Like that..." She probably sounded more upset than she actually was, not to mention being pregnant she was much more prone to overreactions from mood swings.

His laughter faded with the woman's reaction, smile soon joining it as she stuttered out a reply. Quickly sitting up, he dropped the book on the floor, thinking it better if it wasn't in sight for the time. "No, no, Natsumi..." Great, he had upset her. He was only teasing! He would never, ever have imagined Natsumi to be in possession of such a book, and her reaction upon finding it only backed up this theory. Especially after she had mentioned that the box of books had been a gift from her friends. The prank had simply amused him. It seemed like something his own friends would pull.
And, in truth, he hadn't been -looking- at the book. ...Just pretending to. And only a few pages. Yup.
Again giving no regard for personal space, he reached up and gently moved her hands from her face, offering a smile. "I didn't mean any offense, I assure you. I was just teasin', all right? I know it's not yours. It's just th' same sort of thing my friends would've pulled on me--and I'd probably laugh at it then as well. C'mon, don't be upset..."

She swallowed as he moved forward, looking at him curiously from behind her hands. He was moving closer, moving her hands away from her face... She let him somewhat reluctantly, biting her lip. He wasn't mad? He.. was just laughing at her friends. She could certiantly accept that. A smile broke over her face, "I.. I wasn not upset..." she lied horribly giving a tiny sniff, her eyes had gotten a bit watery in the embaressment, her nose doing something simmalar. "You do not think I am horrible?" It was almost too apparent that she was reluctant in asking, but she wanted to know now... Because it didn't seem like he was.

His smile brightened as hers returned, and with her question he laughed, shaking his head. "Certainly not!" He gave her hands a quick squeeze, then released them and sat back as before to make her more comfortable. "Should I? I've seen no reason to. Long as y' don't call me 'd**k'ead', we're fine." He grinned.

She beamed in releif, admitably.. It was a rather funny joke... Megumi knew exactly how she would react to those things, and apparently she had been right. "d**k.. head?" she repeated in confusion. Oh man.. she heard that word somewhere... But where. She looked a bit confused for a moment, before it clicked. And it wasn't somethign she'd learned in school... It had come from one of the boys getting ahold of an Japanese to English dictonary and joking around.
SHe looked a bit disturbed at first... speaking before her mind caught up. "But.. Your head looks nothing like....that."
Her confusion was distracted as her stomach growled, luckally she couldn't blush anymore. Then, undoubtably, it was followed with a little fluttering kick. She jumped, always finding the feeling to be a bit suprising. Her hand automatically fell to her stomach.

Thom watched her for a moment, a strangely restrained expression on his face, but soon he was forced to give in and broke into laughter once more, shaking his head in a disbelieving manner. He laughed once more, though it faded with her little jump and the altered placing of her hand. However, his smile remained, and after a moment he nodded towards the door. "Want t' go get somethin' t' eat?"
