Zach went to grab a towel from under the sink so that it would be right outside the shower when he was done. He slipped off what two articles of clothing he had, casting them aside. He usually never felt tempted to strip down to the buck in front of others, especially given the plated scales appearing all down the front of both his legs. However, Kaveri was an exception. Not only had they both seen one another naked before while quite high, but it felt like, out of all the islanders he'd met, she alone was the only person he really could call a good friend among them. The rest, no matter how he looked at it, were merely acquaintances who would no doubt find out what he'd done to Aubrey in time.

"There's no stopping them," he remarked grimly. "And I'm shocked it was Dr. Duvert who brought that guy here, too, considering yesterday he was pretty much begging for his job back from Moreau." As long as someone was watching the cameras, there was no harm in embellishment. He pulled the curtain a little and slipped in, his toe-claws clicking on the floor. There wasn't as much room as he'd have preferred, but it would have to do. As long as he didn't look at her, or anything, and vice versa...

It was annoying trying to mind seven "limbs" and a pair of horns, but somehow he managed. He let his tail hang outside the curtain perimiter, and tried to keep his wings folded. When he tried ducking his head under the showerhead, he felt the horn-points collide with the wall and immediately pulled back, rubbing his head. For all the time he'd had them, it was difficult to keep track of how long they were. "I guess trying to believe another reason isn't so bad. It's almost pitiful, but I can see why. It's just that it's so easy for someone like one of us to come burst the bubble. That, or you just get changed and find out the experience yourself."

"I wouldn't have thought so either, but he tried to throttle me once and I don't trust him." He scrubbed at a few places on his chest and back, trying not to let his hands collide with his stunted wings or the miniature back-ridge that seemed to protrude from where his spine was. Sounding somewhat of a hypocrite, he tried to hint at the source of his discomfort. "Probably not a good idea to hang around him though. I've heard some... bad things about him. Stuff he's done, and it's definitely not anything an octopus is known to do."

Kaveri moved over to the side to allow Zach some more space, offering him the tattered green washcloth she had in her hand. "Wait, really? When did he get the axe? You'd think the big honcho would keep his best liar around, it seems most of the other people I've met were convinced to come here by that man's stories." Man, was she out of the loop. She wasn't as intimately wrapped in island politics as some other people, perhaps. "I can't imagine Moreau himself coming out of his hidey-hole and coming up with elaborate stories, it seems Sabin is the glowing angler's lure for this organization."

Mm, gossip. It was a guilty pleasure, especially when it concerned someone she was sure she wasn't going to meet in a friendly capacity any time soon. Sabin in particular baffled her -- where do the lies end and the truth begins? Can anything he says be taken seriously? Moreover, how can anyone knowing his reputation take him seriously?

"I wonder how many people that poor old guy's gonna run into and still believe it's a prank," Kaveri mused aloud, "but I know how he feels, having just been there not too long ago. I suppose I was lucky that I had Chubbs introduce me to this mess and not, uh, me. If my human self were to meet myself as I am now..." She chuckled and tried to imagine such a situation, then listened to Zach's warning about Billy.

"He seemed pretty harmless to me. Other than having a rather dark sense of humor, I just... didn't pick up anything off of him. Reputations be damned," she shrugged, "He just struck me as some grizzled, broken pothead. I'd be broken too, if I were in his place. Poor guy got a nasty animal to be stuck with." She could only begin to wonder what stories he had to tell. Kaveri glanced over, catching Zach attempt to scrub his back.

"Need help with that?"

"Suppose I'm partly to blame, as usual, but there's something I don't regret. He was definitely out here with all of us the other day, at least before he zapped me. I didn't even know he'd been outside with the rest of us before then. Whatever was going on, it's a little too... personal for me to make heads or tails of. I guess I ended up hearing a few things I shouldn't have while Dr. Duvert and Moreau were bickering." Zach had no qualms with sharing what he knew with her, and especially about such distasteful individuals as the doctors. He took the washcloth and started working on his left arm.

"Didn't look like that many more would do it," he smiled sadly, brushing some wet hair from in front of his face. Thanks to his less and less frequent attempts to use mirrors and the fact that he hadn't had a hair cut in over two months, Zach was on the scruffy side. His hair was getting somewhat long, almost to his shoulders, and he didn't shave his face as much as he used to. "Well, you survived. I got introduced to this place by Antony, a little too harshly to believe it at first. Y'know, three tails, I think you guys made out at a party."

"Well...er, I guess as long as he hasn't done anything to you." He was tempted to repeat what they had both heard, about Billy being the island's rapist, but it wasn't worth it. What had come over him? For Kaveri being just a friend he was feeling unreasonably overprotective. "Oh? Yeah, that would be great. If it wasn't for these claws, I don't think it'd be a big problem for me. Don't want to cut myself."

"Yeah, remember when we saw him arguing with Aubrey in the arcade?" Kaveri reminded him, nodding her head affirmatively. "Wonder what it was that got him ******** like that. I don't think it was you, there was probably a lot deeper s**t going on that we're not aware of, and probably for good reason." An amused smirk crossed her face, "And so it seems, the system is starting to shut down. Well, at least for a little while. I knew an operation like this couldn't be run as flawlessly as they'd want us to believe."

She had wanted to mention possible holes in the security and ways to exploit them, but neglected to say such a thing, knowing that there are cameras around. And if not that, then at least a microphone in the bathroom... pity the poor bastards behind the monitors watching the toilet cams. A silly thought crossed her mind, tempting her to dial 0 and order a t-shirt that read 'Dr. Moreau is watching me pee' when she had some spare time. Hell, prank calls to the labs could lead to highly entertaining results...

"Oh yeah, I remember her," Kaveri grinned at the memory, "I wonder how she's holding up these days."

She twirled a claw in the air, reaching over to take the bar of soap and the washcloth, soaping it up and gingerly scrubbing his back, carefully going under his wings and between the spines. It was a damned odd texture to be sure, although nowhere near as disturbing as Billy's slimy, suckered hands. It was vaguely reminiscent of a time when she went to some backwoods petting zoo with her parents when she was little and got to hold a rat snake -- kind of a cool, smooth-scaled texture. Snakeskin was rather pleasing to touch, and this brought back memories.

"Y'ought to be careful 'round here, someone might wanna turn you into a set of luggage and boots," she joked, slowly working down towards his tail.

His tail gave a twitch before slipping back into the shower. "Oh, yeah, that. But he drove away. When I found him the other day it looked like he'd raided Avery's wardrobe or something for clothes, and he said he'd been locked out of the labs. Well... we can only hope... it would be a relief for all of this to be over. I'd never look at science the same way again, unfortunately."

"Surviving, I'd think. She can probably glare to death anything that gives her trouble." It was amazing how tense he'd been the whole day without noticing. He relaxed a little as she scrubbed. Evidently close to a decade of self-initiated solitude with one arm had made back-scrubbing a difficult affair for him. As he washed the bulk of his hair, all the hair that was usually streaming behind him in need of a haircut, he turned his head a little and smirked at her. "'Someone'? Don't say that too loud, you'll give them ideas."

Avery? That wasn't a name she'd heard before. Probably another one of the many she has yet to meet on this island. "Man, Moreau wasn't kidding when he said that the labs were gonna have a lockout when it first happened."

A rumbling chuckle came from the vulture woman's throat as she continued to scrub. "I bet people'll pay a good deal for dragon boots," she said, then reached down and offered a complimentary squeeze before adding, "I, however, am rather content with dragon butt."

Zach parted his wet hair out of his face. His hand slid down the side of his face, encountering bristles. He'd forgotten to shave. Again. It seemed like even the daily routines he'd been so accustomed to were simply not able to withstand the shock of being told he nearly a murderer. Not to mention the fact that each day could be his last. None of it made sense, and at the same time he had to adhere to the rules of the doctors' madness or be killed. Jamal got off pretty easily with the cage. "It's... hard to know when to take them seriously," he smirked, a little wistfully.

At Kaveri's unexpected action, Zach's tail went suddenly rigid, the tip twisting loosely around one of Kaveri's ankles. His jaw worked a moment, but he failed to make any noise. It was beyond him whether she was serious or not. After a flush crept into his face and gave the shower the feeling of an extra hundred degrees of heat, he seemed to regain his voice. "A-are you?"

PostPosted: Tue May 30, 2006 12:13 am

"I bet those guys think that ******** with us is all very funny," Kaveri remarked, "I bet they're all sitting in the coffee room right now, laughing about how dumb ol' Zach fell for that hilarious murder prank." She thrummed idly, tilting her head to the side and eyeing the ceiling in thought.

"I'm sure you've heard enough of that, though. A change of subject might be best to get our mind off of the assorted horrors du jour," the vulture-woman said, tapping her bottom lip with the end of her claw. A wicked little grin crossed her face as she felt the smooth, serpentine tail wrap around her ankle. This clearly was a situation that required special attention.

Her voice came out like a low purr, and she reached around to stroke Zach's scruffy, unshaven chin. In all honesty, she wasn't good at this whole 'seducing' thing -- Kaveri excelled in sex while high, or jumping into the action on a whim.

"You know, I really hate it when girls pretend to be coy and beat around the bush and s**t," she says rather bluntly, "and I know most guys hate it, too. So, I'm going to be honest here -- what are your thoughts about doing something that'll make the guys behind the camera wanna turn it off in disgust?"

The woman laughed and hoped Zach wasn't so clueless as to not get what she was implying in both words and actions. At least she already spared him the "oh I'm playing innocent and hard to get tee hee" crap. Kaveri don't play that way!

"Th-there's nothing I can do to- to convince them otherwise," he mumbled, obviously not yet following her train of thought. The shower still felt far too hot. He couldn't even sweat in a variety of places thanks to the plating of scales. He tried to face forward, had to face forward, and pick out the intricate little drops of water on the shower wall. Deep down he wanted to panic. It was as though he were cornered, when certainly he wasn't. Cornered by words? No. Kaveri had now launched into a sarcastic little tirade now, but the meaning of the words vanished like steam as soon as they reached his ears. Zach's brain was lagging far behind the rest of him as it struggled to decipher the long necked woman's subtlety.

Feeling her hand on him immediately snapped him back into the present moment much as car crashes throw people without seatbelts. They were in a shower together, alone save the constant watchful eyes behind the cameras. His tail wrapped a little more around the ankle. It was uncertain whether it really had a mind of its own or not. He took a few breaths, moving slightly on his strange feet so that he could face her better. It was probably a mistake.

There were some things one just had to avoid thinking about when around women. What he was now looking at just about topped the list.

The blush became a coursing fire under his skin. If his skin had been any less red already it felt as though he'd glow. There were little other places to look but at Kaveri's grinning expression. College had taught him just enough about girls that Kaveri's hinting couldn't go over his head like it should have. How could he turn this down? He had no control of his life now but these brief moments when decisions rested on him. Death was no longer ahead but behind him, out of sight and poised to strike the killing blow. On Moreau's orders he could be disposed of and no one, likely not even the other prisoners of the island, would ever know.

For a moment his eyes and expression seemed to reflect nothing at all. Then the burning across his cheeks faded slightly. He gave her a nervous smile. He didn't have a lot of practice being sexy or anything like that. It was most probably evident. He'd do it... it was Kaveri at least, not like she was a complete stranger after all the time they'd spent together. "Well, the less they'll be able to stand watching it, the more I'm interested..." He slowly reached out his hands. They hovered in midair unsurely, then darted to clasp Kaveri's own grey ones in their different grasps.

PostPosted: Tue May 30, 2006 1:23 am

That wandering tail had Kaveri thinking of all the wonderful possibilities and uses that it had. It seemed prehensile, after all, which just added more flavor to the act. Really, how many other people on this rock have lovers with prehensile tails?

Death was not behind Zach, nor ahead of him -- death was more adjacent to him in the shower as tried turning around to face her. Or, rather, a popular symbol of death. Vultures typically lack a killing instinct, except for putting the sickly out of their misery.

This all amused her very much. Before Zach grabs out for her hands, she runs her fingers down the smooth, plated scales of his belly. The more she assessed the situation, the more interesting it got. Everything was new and shiny, and despite being a hideous, unnatural addition at the hands of a madman... Kaveri couldn't help but to find it inexplicably attractive.

"Loud and messy, then?" The long-necked woman cocked her head, smiling eagerly. "I'm ready whenever you are."

Surely, this would be the fuel of nightmares. Hopefully the poor downstairs neighbour won't be too traumatized by the noise... he'd only just moved in!

And in some situations, there are no better ways to describe what is happening than quoting H.P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon. This would be one of them.

The nethermost caverns are not for the fathoming of eyes that see; for their marvels are strange and terrific. Cursed the ground where dead thoughts live new and oddly bodied, and evil the mind that is held by no head. Wisely did Ibn Schacabao say, that happy is the tomb where no wizard hath lain, and happy the town at night whose wizards are all ashes. For it is of old rumour that the soul of the devil-bought hastes not from his charnel clay, but fats and instructs the very worm that gnaws; till out of corruption horrid life springs, and the dull scavengers of earth wax crafty to vex it and swell monstrous to plague it. Great holes secretly are digged where earth's pores ought to suffice, and things have learnt to walk that ought to crawl.

Fade to black because, really, nobody needs to see this. Consider this an act of charity.

Say it with stones
Apologizing to Aubrey, 6/7/06

After the soccer game, Kaveri went home to her duplex and washed off. That was a rather invigorating experience and it reminded her of home, so once all the aggro and rioting was said and done (and shockingly, nobody got zapped once), the long-necked woman was feeling rather placid with herself. She decided to do something today that she'd been putting off for a while: Personally apologize to Aubrey for, uh, eating her. She hoped the girl was alright, she hadn't heard much other than what Zach had told her.

What an odd thing to apologize for. As much as Kaveri hated staff and what they stood for, cannibalism just didn't sit well with her. She had to get that off of her chest, because her recent behavior was irking the hell out of her.

She took the long hike to the labs, approaching the gates with a small, crudely-wrapped package held in her hands. She gives a weak wave to the guard, nodding her head at him once. "Hey, man. Is... uh... Dr. Aubrey okay? I want to talk to her, and give her this thing," Kaveri held out the small, shapeless box. "Mostly an apology for stuff. Can I speak with her?"

The guard on durty flipped open the communication box on the fence and paged the doctor.

"She says she'll be right down."

A few minutes later Aubrey, in her chair, came wheeling out to see her. She looked, well, better than the last time Kaveri saw her definately. But she still looked thin and tired from the Aubrey from before 'the incident.' If Kaveri looked, her neck peeking out from above the labcoat had several fading scabs and a few butterfly bandages - but the wounds did not look very serious anymore.

"Miss Porter," the doctor greeted with a nod. She opened the gate and offered to lead her inside the plush lobby. "How can I help you?" she asked on the way

Indeed, she looked better. Much better than when Kaveri had first seen her, as the bedraggled body on the ground. She stared for a few moments, then swallowed hard. She lightly tossed the present between her hands, fidgeting from the stress. The long-necked woman gave an awkward smile, seeing that Aubrey had recovered. She hadn't seen the doctor prior to the incident, so she did not know what she looked like before. "Hey there," the vulture-woman feebly greeted, following Aubrey into the lobby.

"I wanted to apologize," she said, "for... well. You know." She nodded her head towards the scabs and bandages on Aubrey's neck. "I don't like you lab guys and what you stand for, but I feel like s**t about doing that. No fellow human being deserves that kind of s**t."

It took Aubrey a minute to understand exactly what she was apologizing for... she reached up and touched her neck as she motioned to it... then it hit her. Her brow raised slightly, and though her expression stayed mostly nuetral, all the color drained from it. Of course... a vulture.......

Aubrey took a few breaths before attempting to answer. "Of course... you weren't acting under your down actions Miss Porter..."

"I don't remember it even happening," Kaveri admitted, "but stuff just added up. Waking up next to you, blood in my mouth and on my chin, just... it means..." She clenched her jaws, this was becoming very hard on her as she watched Aubrey pale. Was the doctor afraid that she was going to be eaten again? "It's weighing really badly on me."

"So I made you a little gift thing. I know it's not enough to make up for involuntary cannibalism, but I hope you like it," she offers the package to Aubrey, "it might make a good paperweight or something at the very least."

The package is large enough to fit in Aubrey's hand and seems rather heavy for something of its size. It is wrapped in brown paper and an orange string tied in a bow.

Aubrey swallowed. She didn't blame the woman. She really didn't...but still the idea of another person eating your skin... and having to face that. She surpressed a shudder and accepted the gift.

"I.. don't know what to say. Thank you. Really. I mean, I know you didn't have to do anything. Tell the labs.. you know. I mean.." she stopped herself and started over. "Thank you, Miss Porter. I forgive you, if that means anything."

She curiously and carefully unwrapped the little package.

Kaveri herself felt very uneasy. She didn't like the fact that she ate another person, or the fact that she found herself so helplessly drawn to that clearing. And she was starting to eat meat. Raw meat. Viscera from rabbits. This didn't start until after the incident.

"I'm hoping it'll give me a better night's sleep," she frowned, looking at the neck wounds again and shaking her head. "I've been kinda... messed up since that whole mess. I don't think I'll ever get over it. Not as badly as you got it, but... you'd be freaking out too if you found out you ate parts of another human being."

Her straw eyes wandered over to Aubrey's lap, where she unwrapped the gift. Beneath the paper was a smooth, round rock painted with elaborate, detailed lotus flowers in shades of purple, pink, and white with green leaves and blue lines representing water in between the blossoms. It is pretty obviously home-made, the bottom of the rock still had a bit of moss on it from the jungle floor Kaveri found it on before taking it home to paint.

"Yes... yes I would be," she admitted as she finished with the unwrapping.

Aubrey looked a bit surprised by the gift. She ran her fingers over the paint gently, admiring it for a moment. She looked up to the woman. "Did you make this youself?" Her interest was genuine... she wasn't used to getting gifts from the islanders. It almost made her feel guilty...especially given her position. But in her heart she loved the fact that she wasn't utterfly despised. By everyone, at least.

Kaveri smiled weakly as Aubrey admired her handiwork. As much as she didn't like her general preconception of the staff, Aubrey seemed rather... human to her, and not the faceless heartless scientist she envisioned. They could get injured, too, and appreciate gifts.

"I did," the vulture-woman smiled, rather proud of her craftsmanship in painting the stone. The lines were crisp and clean, meticulously done and the flowers were bright in color.

She chewed on her lip thoughtfully, then opened her mouth to speak again. "And, uhm... I don't know what you feel about this, probably not very good -- but please listen to my request. I don't want to see anyone give Zach a hard time for what he did anymore. The red dragon guy. He's not normally the type of person to hurt someone, at least not that I've ever seen," she said, a hint of sadness in her voice as her eyes wandered to the floor. Ignoring that whole rabbit fiasco, things had been peachy thusfar. "Like me, he wasn't aware of what he did. He's not that bad of a guy -- I know you experienced something awful, but please find it in your heart to forgive him like you did me."

Kaveri didn't want to see him tied up and carted off to the labs again, or experience worse repercussions for what he did. She hoped her request meant something, even a little bit of something. While she personally didn't believe that Zach was the one who did it, she still wanted to act in his best interest. "He's a friend and I wanna look out for him," she added thoughtfully.

Aubrey admired the work, obviously impressed and appreciative of the gift. She put the rock in her lab carefully until she could find somewhere to put it.

"I don't blame Zach for what he did," Aubrey said honestly. "I mean.. I can't help but a bit, erm, awkard because of it but... he shouldn't be punished." She nodded to herself slowly as she thought about what to say. "We didn't know his mental condition when he and Sabin where taken in. Though I will warn you that he will have to go through his further injects in the lab observation room." She paused. "You see, he wasn't inject with the same thing that surpressed your human brain. He just... reacts to the changes rather violently. Its just a safety precaution. We can't have what happened to me happen to anyone else."

She ran her finger over the rock again. "But he's suffer no permantent 'effects' of what happened as long he's not a danger to others when not going through his transitions."

Kaveri sighed with relief upon hearing Aubrey say that she didn't blame Zach and felt that he shouldn't be punished. She never expected anyone from the labs to be so... human, after all, especially given the nature of the experiments. Maybe Aubrey wasn't responsible for the serums. Kaveri didn't know her role in the labs, she barely knew the lab heirarchy to begin with.

"I'm glad... I'm glad you feel that way. I was worried that you would be mad at him or worse," the vulture woman said quietly. She hadn't known about Zach's ill reactions to the serum, but she understood now why he would be seeing the insides of the labs again in the future. "As long as nobody gets hurt, I'll be happy."

The part about 'suppressing her human brain' had her quirking a brow, but she decided not to press on the issue further. Hell, it didn't even occur to her to ask what she was turning into. "Well, thanks for hearing me out. I hope you get better soon," she gave a small wave and took a step back, starting to turn towards the door leading outside. "Take care."

Something about this all still made the woman feel very uncomfortable. She even felt vaguely hungry, which just made matters worse.

"I can't blame him for a negative reaction to something we're doing to him. Would be rather hypocritical of me, now wouldn't it."

She looked up and gave her a nod. "But I know he didn't mean it. I mean, I highly doubt he likes me given the circumstances... but he's not a murderer."

Aubrey held up the rock as she left. "Thank you again."

She watched led her out and closed the gate behind her, not having any clue she hadn't figured out her serum yet. Aubrey figured she understand why she ate what she perceived as a dying animal. Had she known she was still in the dark Aubrey probably would have told. She figured blaming it on a vulture would be reassuring.

Relatively speaking.

The mask on the door
Personal RP

The sealant had finally dried and Kaveri examined her finished product with much pride. She took a step back from the table to examine her creation as it stared back at her with wild, bulging yellow eyes and a gaping maw full of conical teeth. It was ready to be hung on the door, and she smiled at herself and her own little creation to further personalize her duplex. Hopefully Josh doesn't mind the garden out back.

Kaveri went over and picked the mask up off the table, holding it at chest-level as she looked at the beaked, wooden visage again.

Garuda.

The King of Birds, the mount of Vishnu, the enemy of all serpents and nagas. He was a devouring god, flying across the universe to swallow all evil.

The idea of having the god's face on her door made her feel a bit safer. She was more inclined to confide in a god now more than ever, and really, what harm could a little spirituality do in a place like this?

Kaveri put the mask down and stepped outside with a hammer and a nail, securing the nail in place before returning with the mask and hanging it on her door. As it was the way she designed it, with its wide, watchful eyes, it stared out towards the rest of the village with its vicious, toothy grin.

Proud of her work, Kaveri retreated back inside and closed the door behind her.

On the outside, Garuda saw everything.

The octopus had risen, and ultimately found himself not only staring at the ceiling of the recroom, but also smacked harshly in the face by cold, sharp reality, the horrors of which barely compaired to the rollar coaster ride of terror he had just climbed out of. Whatever he had dreamed, he couldn't remember it- or rather, his mind refused to allow him to comprehend. His tentacles gripped at the rug as he tried to pull himself up, but the world was still swaying. How had he- no, he knew the answer to any question he might have lay in the bottle stuck to the suckers underneith his rear webbing opposite from his cigarettes.

Tentitively, once he had managed to at least lean against the wall, keeping his eyes clenched shut. He managed to produce a cigarette, peaking to strike a match only to let the cancer stick drop from his purple lips at the flairing of sudden light. With his extra limbs he gripped his head, giving a terrible groan.

His heart was beating. His pulse was going crazy. Speed speed. Had it been speed? No. Pills. Better than vicodin. Better than Coke. Much better than Coke. ********. Should he eat? He felt naucious. He didn't want to sleep. He blinked, letting his eyes adjust as he stared at the bottle. Four... he had taken four... let's up the dose.

Kaveri had been in her duplex all day again today, painting rocks and whatever else little things she had come across while wandering the jungle. The wobbly wooden table had a small array of stones and she was sitting next to them, holding a little rock and painting a small white bird on it.

She felt like a crazy old lady, but instead of hoarding cats, she hoarded stones.

Kaveri kind of predicted for this day to be like every other -- paint some rocks, do some gardening, maybe check out the cafeteria later barring a visit from someone. An ordinary day, right?
