Ever rumbled, just a bit. Definitely amused. "I like languages better, anyway. I think I'll stick with that."

"How many do you know?" He said absentmindedly, eating a chicken wing in with hopes of being a little bit clean, but having napkins right next to his plate.
"I don't know any but English."

"A bunch." He chewed on it a little, thinking, tipped his head to the side, ticking off on his fingers. "French, because my father spoke it. Spanish and Italian are really easy from there, and Portuguese a little bit too. Latin, of course, and then I took a class to learn Welsh a couple years ago. I can kind of manage in German but not well, it needs some studying." He looked down at the count, seven fingers out. "...so maybe three well, two decently, and then the rest so-so. And of course, my current project, with the, uh, ponies." He remembered all at once they were in public and hoped Melvin got the idea. "You never even took a language in high school? I thought that was pretty standard..."

"I took French in highschool. Friends of mine had plans to go to Canada so it made sense to take it. I wasn't great at it, and by now have forgotten about it all. I might be able to count and be able to order a glass of water. That's about it."
He through about it. "...a ver - re d-d'eau?" He tried to recall from dusty memories of being in French class and wishing it was lunch already.
"Languages weren't really a big passion of mine, so it didn't have my focus. I learned it enough to get good grades but not enough and maybe hopefully impress my girlfriend. I suppose that has changed a bit since I'm now in runics though more written than spoken. It comes off more as a formula to me most times."

"I like that, too. The formula, the working out details, but I got distracted before I ever really got into runic stuff..." Ever'd gotten down one chicken finger, but the others seemed forgotten in front of him. Instead he leaned into his hand and sipped his drink, considering Melvin across the table. "But languages are like that too. Especially Latin, and what I looked at of ancient Greek. You're working out a puzzle." Just one beat. "Do you want to learn? Or are you content with 'un verre d'eau'?" Of course it sounded comfortable in his mouth.

He wiped his mouth and hands at intervals, and looked up at him with a shrug. "I don't see much need unless they moved me over to a French Base. It's not like I'm trying to impress anyone now." Though.....didn't Lawr know Swedish. That might have been too much of a giveaway, and he had been trying to learn a few phrases here and there in that but had lost some fire once the breakup became official.
"Runicing....I can just zone out and focus on just the one thing. The one task, and the end result shows if I was paying attention and doing it perfect. It gives my mind a place to escape."

"I understand that." He licked his lips, though, while he considered -- fingers scratching at his hairline in a way that was just slightly nervous. "I could help you brush up on your French, though, I think. If you were interested."

He considered it a moment. "That could be fun. If you don't mind having me as a student. At least I can go to France whenever I want as a lesson." Or even to practice.

"I've never really taught, but I don't mind." His drink finally rattled empty and Ever sat back -- looking just a bit pink around the edges and much more relaxed than when they'd been walking around. He'd still barely made a dent in his food, but apparently he'd had enough. Except that he stared down into his glass like he was considering another. "Worst case I can just talk at you until something makes sense."

He smiled as he took a drink. "I'd like that. When people talk at me." He like conversation.
He liked when people were around.

French, then, Ever could manage: a handful of old jokes that probably wouldn't make any sense at all to Melvin, and then a couple stories, and a poem he'd learned at some point in his youth, and it would at least fill the time until dinner was done and their check came. He didn't argue the payment again, and to be fair, it wasn't much. A pleasant dinner before they escaped out into the real world again. MoonKitsune new thread, if you'd like?!
