Dismissed. This new General-Queen had dismissed Schörl.

Quartz watched his General for signs of her reaction. Ender's Game hadn't exactly been his favorite of all the books Stroud had expected to be read -- but he thought he had the gist of her meaning, all the same. If so, Hessonite's reaction here didn't exactly ruin the plan entirely -- she was still setting herself up as an oppositional figure, certainly -- but it didn't play right into that hand, either.

The Generals had called Hessonite's bluff. But she hadn't been bluffing.

Some of the others seemed to take great offense at their dismissal from the division. Quartz doubted he'd see those kinds of theatrics from Schörl, unless they served some deeper purpose -- and he doubted she needed or wanted him to leave alongside her as part of some sort of bland show of solidarity. His job was to stay until the end of the meeting, with All-One, and hear the rest of what Hessonite had to say. That way, it could be relayed back to Schörl later. She'd let him know if she required otherwise. She was never vague unless it served some purpose.

Others -- wise soldiers, those -- were already offering to pass out cameras, to restore the meeting to a sort of pack harmony. Balance would be reasserted -- and Hessonite would have established firmly that even veteran soldiers could not expect to simply go on as they had before, business-as-usual. The world would not fall apart because the new management had new ideas of how to run things.

A number of soldiers leaving the faction meant there would be a power vacuum. Quartz waited to see who'd rush to fill it.

General Schörl

Instead of making use of solidarity, and shoring up her authority by creativity to retake control of the situation, Hessonite chose...what? But to prove in spades every declamation of unthinking and unworthiness. True enough, the concerns would not wisely be addressed there an then, but in private after. Punitive measures was the answer- a task given to the unit as a whole. A task like a punishment that served Metallia; punish the unit and keep the unification. Punish the unit and make no martyrs. Give them something that built, all of them. The whole of their barracks out in the proverbial rain doing push-ups. Or in a circle of Solitary boxes.

Pity.

Special Operations was made a spectre indeed, but not of fear. The division was made into no more than shock troops of expressed, but thoughtless, brutality. Sometimes mistakes were made, and faith misplaced. Contingency was already considered in choosing to try to shore up the Sovereign. This had been a possibility from the beginning. General Schörl gave a small nod, and turned to go, intoning to All-One again, "Note all that passes."

The name of a division does not determine my best uses, and what I will make, for Metallia. A team, he said once. Perhaps the time comes again. With our own hands, what we will raise.

Captain Raite

Captain Raite watched the proceedings, and the unnecessary act of the lieutenant's star seed removal. He had been willing to wait and see, at first, to see what her intentions were. Concerns were voiced by those in all ranks, whether it be lieutenant, captain, or general. He knew none of these generals, but one did not rise to the position of general on pure stupidity. Unless Hessonite would prove to be the exception? Regardless, Cinnabar, General Schörl, and even Super Sailor Typhon were not in the wrong. Perhaps they weren't entirely in the right either. But for her to dismiss them out of hand so callously, and without regard was beginning to reveal their General-Queen's true character.

He understand her desire to purge their ranks of the weak, and those likely to betray them. But the idea of taking pictures of those beneath their commands to force their loyalty? To resort to such childish tactics, perhaps her childish appearance was befitting of her after all. The forced threat she gave to them was of no concern to him. He was passed a camera by some lieutenant, and disgust flickered in his eyes. He wasn't under the illusion that he had any control of his being, having joined the organization. But he would be damned if he drug family, friends, and those related to him to be surveyed by someone who didn't even understand the individuality of her subordinates. The negaverse had no right to handle things in this manner. Had he been a lieutenant subjected to this, he would have torn apart his own superior. Throwing the machinery down, his foot didn't hesitate to crushed the camera and toss it aside.

The appearance of her weapons only proved how weak she was. For her to resort to physical tactics belied her lack of confidence in her other skills. Did she truly believe the only way she could command loyalty was to coerce it from them? When her strength yielded, would she still have her little army that she hoped to build behind her? Or would they abandon her? The thought of that acting general-queen, as far as he was concerned, reduced to her knees brought a grin to his face.

Logic told him to stand down. To bide his time, and await for future developments. Especially in his precarious position with little standing as a captain. To throw it all away in a fit of emotion was foolish. But currying favor, and pretending to fawn over this little girl's boots had never been his intention. The actions she would force them to do would degrade them to even less then dirt. If he carried out her orders, it wouldn't even be done with a shred of pride or righteousness in their cause. "I am a loyal soldier of the negaverse, and I would be willing to risk my life for Queen Laurelite and Metallia. However, General Hessonite, from your behavior -- if all you're looking for is a mindless pawn, who you'll use and cast aside as long as they're convenient, then I have no desire to be under your command."

The confidence he felt in this branch vanished. A mild nostalgia washed over him, watching the branch he had seen since the beginning of its creation. But seeing General Hessonite caused that nostalgia to disappear, knowing he wouldn't be able listen to her orders, much less obey them. He would have nothing to lose by leaving this branch. With that said, he teleported out.

It was very hard to hide her smile. Very hard indeed. This had worked out better—far better than she had hoped. All of the big mouthed agents who thought they were Metallia’s gift to the Negaverse were gone, and she was left with a small handful, some of which might even be useful. The one issue she found with those who had left were the two lieutenants that she had called up. Violane and…well. And the one who had never bothered to give her name. She had not given them leave to go, and the fact that the two of them followed their Generals out of the meeting instead of waiting for instructions from her, well. That put a slightly bad taste in her mouth. But oh well. It was their loss.

Hessonite dismissed her weapons and took hold of Huntite’s arm and hopped off the stage she had been standing on, going to join her fellow agents and be on the same level as them. They had stayed. She had no quarrel with them.

With a small shake of her head at Lapis, she chose instead to hand out the cameras to each of the agents still present. “I do believe that my true motive was skewed by those who had formed their opinion of me far too quickly, but at the same time, that was what I was going for, so it works out regardless. These cameras are not just for spying on people’s friends and families, they’re also for yourself. You’re making memories with your lieutenants, with your captains and your generals. If you leave, and lieutenants, this is really to you, your superiors already know this by now, I am sure, but if you leave, you lose yourself. You lose memories. You lose who you were. Who you are.”

She glanced at Ashanite, her expression hard to read. “It’s difficult. I lost who I was when I was brought to the Negaverse. I just wish I had cared enough then to preserve who I was in a better way. And like hell am I going to let you all forget who you are. You are strong, powerful agents who know how to follow orders, and I respect that. You are the branch who must follow orders, even if they are unpleasant. That is your job, and I am sorry if it turns your stomachs to think of it that way, but there will be times where you will be asked to do things that you don’t agree with, that you feel are wrong, but you must do them. It is your job, and it is your responsibility to follow the orders of those above you.”

The General Queen paused and grinned. “Even if they seem to be a crazy a** b***h who wants to change things up. Because that is what you have signed up for. Special Operations is not about showing off. It is about following directions. And I would be proud to have everyone in this room join my branch. If you are still interested.”

Jarosite, who had been quiet up to this point, frowned at the cameras. The frown deepened into a scowl as she dismissed several senior Generals he himself looked up to and fought along side. He continued to glare quietly until it came to a point that he decided that it had gone on long enough.

"Apologies, but I fight with the Negaverse to protect my family and keep them safe from myself. I'm not about to let people spy on me simply because we're to follow directions. I'm not about to let my family become targets if my so called loyalty wavers." The tall pirate themed general, who probably had gone completely unnoticed this whole time, gave a formal bow to Hessonite.

"Good luck with the recruits and shaping SpecOps into what you want it to be. I will take my leave, however."

Then he left, following the other Generals out the door.

It was a small gathering, what was left. Where Axinite's meeting had been quiet and noncontroversial, laden with snacks and light paperwork, Hessonite's meeting had been flashfire and scorched earth.

Quartz had no care for flashfire and scorched earth -- nor, as it turned out, had most of the Special Operations division. And they'd made it known.

Given the recent bleed that their army had had to purifications, a proactive approach to identifying at-risk agents was reasonable, sensible, if it was done wisely . . . but while this seemed obvious to the Intelligence division, where forewarned was considered to be forearmed, it was evidently crude disloyalty among the Special Operations division. A typical military attitude: straightforward violence was considered perfectly honorable, whereas nonviolent deceit was an affront to the senses. Spies had always faced this sort of stigma.

That left precious little option for stemming their attrition problem. If Special Operations wasn't willing to work with Intelligence in dealing with potential defectors and double agents before they actually took action, then Intelligence could file all the briefs and warnings they liked, and nothing would ever be done about it until it was too late.

Not promising -- not that Quartz cared. He cared about doing his own job -- it was no trouble to him if others chose to invest in a pound of cure rather than an ounce of prevention.

Hessonite's methods were poor and ill-considered, and they weren't what Quartz would've chosen, which had just driven a huge portion of the branch away -- but fortunately, they weren't his problem. He had his own division, where their greatest potential problem was that their General-Sovereign might be kind of a nebbish.
