His curiosity did not offer him any grand payout.

He moved closer to the caves that looked too much like a mouth. Were the stones inside actually stones or were they instead fleshy mounds from inside the mouth that had adapted over time with the Fear to become living? How did the cave digest or was it simply one of those things that, after a long time, rotted and then slowly was eaten? Did the mermaids collect bodies from these caves? Did they somehow tend and garden these eating caves?

He wanted to see if they were actually stones, and moved in only to find he was much too distracted and slow before getting his entire arm bite down upon. Pressing against the mouth of the cave, he pulled and turned his arm enough to pull it out and swam away.

Step Two

Some of the caves house many useful stones, other house things waiting to kill you. You can keep on collecting for as long as your willing to risk it (or until you die.)

It wasn't a grand hall, but at least it wasn't chewing on him.

Further away from the less guarded areas of the caves, where the ledges stuck out and offered some resting places, Melvin spotted some more rocks that must have drifted down after some time.

It wasn't much though. He needed to find an actual place that hadn't been picked apart by the mermaids.

While he was still finding stones, they were few. He knew that he had to be near some great pile of stones if he kept finding small stones here and there. He decided he had to see about going up to see where they were drifting down from.

As he continued swimming up, he stopped twice to pick up a stone here and then another on a smaller outcropping. Where was the cave that had them? Had the mermaids simply dropped them on their way to one of the guarded caves?

As he swam up, he stopped just as he went level with the mouth of a cave. There was a brief moment of panic at expecting the mermaids to quickly swim out, but it was unguarded and, after checking it a moment, not alive.

Swimming inside, he checked it out, touching the stone and glad it wasn't twitching to get ready to eat him. Looking about, he saw the reason why it wasn't guarded. There were stones here, but the cave wasn't deep. Maybe they were waiting to convert this one into another trap or had forgotten about it.

Not wanting to pass up what little luck he had, he collected the stones he found and swam out.

Up and up he went, slowly and with caution. Just popping up like an underwater daisy was sure to get him ambushed.

As he continued navigating around caves, he turned around a rock to hide from another mermaid before being yanked down.

It was his underwater bff, Mr. Seaweed. He sighed - but only bubbles gurgles out.

This seaweed seemed to be a bit small than the others, and with a simple tug of his legs, he managed to break free and continue his way up.

The mermaids must have been on a fish-break or just not interested in smaller, more shallow caves. Again he entered one not only for a break, but to check inside if he could find anything.

He managed to find a couple more stones. It wasn't a grand haul, but the little pockets of stones he was finding here and there were helping out a lot.

As he left the cave, he noticed that there were a few stones to the side and bent down to collect them.

He picked up two, inspecting them, and placed them in his bag before closing the clasp. He looked up at the rippling water and watched the bubbles from his mask travel up.

Being under water - it was much nicer just being down in this world than the one above. He took a moment before he checked his oxygen meter and started swimming up.
