Stubborn Strategist

Marcella wandered around through the ranks, glancing to Bo when he ran to be sick in a trash can. His smile a moment later left her somewhat reassured at his condition, but she quietly left an extra bottled water close at hand for him.

"Take it easy if you need to, buddy," she cautioned. He looked to be in decent enough shape, at least, in spite of the flip flops.

Akina Tokuwa

The brown-haired girl made her way back to the tent, cracking open a bottle of her own. She took a sip, then glanced to Xander before repeating his question: "Siblings?

"Yeah, I have a little sister," Marcella replied, then added, "Well, she's like in high school now, but I always think of her as 'little' still." She hadn't even spoken to Julia in a while. But she knew at least that the girl had not been eaten by youma.

"Why do you ask?" She glanced over at him, crossing her arms in spite of her attempt to make conversation.

Kaatje had known a girl in Basic who could tear out pushups like it was no one's business, but in sit-ups, she could barely manage six or seven. Of course, that trainee had had four children before enlisting in the Guard, so that worked differently than the people here--no one looked old enough to have multiple children, or even just one. She stood on Keren's feet for her, counted every sit-up, and they switched off when Keren hit thirty-eight because of course Keren hit thirty-eight.

"Water break," she called, pitching her voice to carry. She sucked down half her water bottle--because she wasn't going to make others do it if she didn't feel like doing it herself--and finished her thirty-eight sit-ups.

She waited until everyone returned before continuing. "Sit-ups increase core strength," she said. "Your ability to overpower those who are holding you down, whether or not you can pull yourself up from the ledge of a building--whether you can pull others up.

"Our next activity is the most important. It measures your endurance--how long you can go before you can't go anymore. This is especially important for us, because our enemies are stronger, and faster, and they have greater endurance than we do. So we have to keep our endurance high in order to reap maximum benefits."

Kaatje led the group over to the side of the field. "We are going to run a mile and a half. The graduation standard is a mile and a half in 14:28. Warhawk standard is running a mile and a half in under nine minutes! You'll start on my mark."

She adjusted her ponytail and stripped off her coat, folding it neatly before setting it aside behind the coolers. "Fast runners to the inside of the track, slow to the outside. If you start feeling faint, leave the track entirely. Dr. Jacobs, Ms. Palomo, if you'd be so kind to assist anyone with symptoms?"

When everyone appeared settled, Kaatje called, "Mark!" and started running.

[Warm Up // 8][Push Ups // 7][Sit Ups // 3][Running // 5]

Kinley chuckled to herself as she watched him match her sit ups to the number. Was he competing with her? If she'd known that, maybe she would have tried just a little harder. As he laid back on the grass, she squared, stretching her legs a bit, especially because she knew they had a run coming up. She shifted her weight from side to side, making sure every muscle was loose.

"Hopefully we do better on the next one!" She laughed, teasing him a bit. Honestly, she wasn't much of a runner. As a dancer, she never had to give full energy and exertion for more than ten minutes at a time. Most of the time. There was always some sort of break between dances in larger pieces. Unless the choreographer was really crazy. Even in class there were breaks while the teacher worked with another student. She really wasn't used to having to give her all for very long.

"But yeah, I probably shouldn't patrol on my own. I really don't know what I'm doing just yet." She stood up, pulling her left leg up to stretch her quads. "I ran into a talking cat, and then this other senshi showed up. I'm still kinda...I don't know how to explain it!" She laughed again as Kaatje gave the details of their run. Kinley offered Arias a hand up and eyed a spot near the middle of the track. She wasn't slow, but she wasn't fast either. She could usually run a mile in about 10 or 11 minutes, which wasn't bad. The mile and a half was longer though, so she might tire out.

[Arias has a constitution bonus, so 13]

Arias nodded and took her hand before pulling himself up with it. He reflected on what she had said while he did so; patrolling solo had been a source of slight discomfort for him. When he was first starting, it was nerve-wracking, even if he liked having the excuse for a little night-time exercise.

"I met a talking cat, too. But it wasn't for me, was for my sister. Who is, you know. Like you."

Senshi wise, at least.

"Just…younger. It was a few months ago, but you know? Thinking back on it, I don't know how to explain it either. All of it felt so weird, like a dream. Hey, good luck," he said when she moved to take her place on the track. He chose a spot closer to the inside, and while he was modest about his running, he had run track in high school for long enough that he figured he wasn't that rusty. He was here to push himself, and he wanted a challenge. Plus, he needed to make up for his lack of sit-up skills.

After her less-than-amazing performance on the situps, Tallulah thought she might be due to get her second wind and finish strong. A mile and a half was long, sure, but she knew she could do it in her senshi form no problem - and she'd been swimming twice that distance at the pool. So she was feeling confident that she'd at least finish it, maybe even get a decent time.

She missed the ten-minute mark by about thirty seconds, to her dismay, but hey! Woo-hoo! She'd totally done better than she expected to and that was awesome. Once she'd gotten a drink of water, she found Jeanne for a high-five.

"Woo!" she cheered. "Alright. Just the wall climb left."

Sounded fun.

Tallulah gets +1 for Teamwork, so, 8.

Songstress Kitsune

Finn was a good runner, sure, but he'd always been more about distance than speed. It wasn't that he walked any of the course, just that he was naturally not that swift. He just wasn't aerodynamic! He was shaped like a brick!

So, like, eleven minutes was a totally respectable time for him. He went and retrieved some Gatorades from the tent and then looked around for his partner, eager to see how she'd done and offer her his token of friendship.

Finn gets +3 constitution bonus, so, 8.

Bo (Teamwork) earned a 2 for sit-ups! And an 11 for running!

Being agreeable about, well, pretty much everything, Bo took Kaatje's advice with a smile, though it was invisible since he was still facedown in the grass. He did manage to lift one arm up and give her an emphatic thumbs up though. Several moments later, he was actually able to haul his a** up off the ground and pad barefoot back over to get more water.

But hey! He didn't have to go far because some sweet angel sent from the heavens above placed a bottle of water beside him. "I will build monuments in your name," he said to Marcella, quickly uncapping the bottle and drinking it -- a little too fast though. Better slow down.

Oh, hey, sit ups? WHY NOT? The water was making him feel better, and since Bo spent some portion of his life either drunk or hungover, he didn't seem to be as phased as he should be. It helped that he was a very physically fit guy. But, like Kaatje, a part of him wondered if he would actually make it through this whole thing.

Dropping to the ground, he started doing some sit-ups.

Some sit-ups.

Well, 1.5 sit-ups.

Then he laid on the ground and sort of, well, just rested. One arm draped over his face. The other brought the water bottle back to his lips every now and then. Any minute now, Bo was confident he would bounce back.

WHICH WAS EXACTLY WHAT HE DID.

Running, aside from swimming, was kind of Bo's thing. And like a glorious antelope, he loped off at a steady and pretty fast pace. "It's a beautiful day for a jog," he said, sing-song as he cheered on all the other runners. He had actually been on the track team in high school, specializing in long distances. It was so easy to just zone out and listen to your body when it had more to do with endurance than anything else.

That was exactly what he did now, finishing the assigned distance in less than 8 minutes. He was so into the run (it felt good, man) that he actually kept running beyond the required length for a "cool down" lap. Just because. Free spirit gotta be free. He might have even lapped people, who knows. It could happen.

Maggie (Constitution) earned a 7 for sit-ups! And an 8 for running!

Paris said a bunch of things, all of which were fascinating to the excitable teen. (Die tomorrow, schmie schmamarrow!) Unfortunately, she was naturally selfish and could only focus on one part. "HOLD THE PHONE," Maggie said, holding one palm up. "Hold. The. Freaking Phone. I could be a princess?"

The idea of being a princess had been a dream of Maggie's ever since she saw her first Disney movie. (That, and flowing, gorgeous hair.) She had heard something about Princesses on the job, so to speak, but she hadn't really taken it seriously. Unfortunately -- or perhaps fortunately for Paris -- the troops were being rallied again this time for sit-ups. "Oh god, a lot of rules," she muttered to herself. Maggie hoped she was doing it right?

After a few mess-ups, the young teen finally feel into a rhythm. She got up to 30 before her clenched abdominal muscles could no longer propel her upper body high enough. 30 felt good enough. With a grunt, she collapsed to the ground. "Ohhhh kaaaaay, I'm spent," she said, letting herself cool down on her back before finally sitting up in the traditional sense to sip on her water bottle. She only marginally paid attention to how Paris did; adolescence, you know?

This work out session was quickly tiring out the girl. She was used to her normal schedule allow for a lot more down time between bouts of physical exertion. Much sooner than she would have liked, Maggie was back on her feet to prepare for -- oh, joy -- running. "I wish I could get school credit for this," she said. "Trade in this mile-ish for the next mile I have to run for gym class."

As she was fresh out of junior high, Maggie still had to take a required gym class. And since the gym teacher didn't find Maggie's snappy pop culture jokes funny, Maggie end up running a lot of extra laps to "build character." It had the added bonus of making her endurance pretty excellent. Not to mention that running was sort of trendy and so the 14-year-old had adopted it as her preferred exercise of choice (when she exercised, which wasn't regularly). When she wanted to feel particularly grown-up, Maggie liked to dress in matching work out wear and use her mother's treadmill in the basement.

In the end, Maggie finished the run in a bit over 10 minutes, her ponytail swaying from side to side the entire time, which she felt pretty good about honestly. She crossed back to her water bottle, cheeks flushed, and downed several quick sips. Draping her arms over her head, she walked in circles, waiting for her heart rate to calm down and fighting to avoid that awful feeling of having a stitch in her side. Teal eyes peered around for her partner, and she spotted Paris still running. Uh oh, it didn't look like Paris was managing the run very well. OH WELL! Paris had a husband and was basically an expert senshi. Maggie doubted that she concerned herself with things as mundane as recreational running.

Delilah wasn't sure if she was going to come in overtime or close to it. Running was not something she did often and the last time she recalled, it had been through the woods in the rain, down hill. Somehow she doubt that counted.

So as their 'commander' called out, she took off and tried to ignore her time.

It hurt not long after she took off in her side. Cramp? she wasn't sure but she followed something she had heard awhile ago and crossed her arms over her head. Silly as it looked, it seemed to help.

Eighteen minutes later, the teen crossed the mark and fell over.

Though she made it off the track, she was laying there breathing hard when Finn found her. "That...hurt..." She managed out with a half smile.

Orah had been rather proud of her partner, and herself, for the number of pushups they accomplished together. It was hard to keep up a steady conversation as they did their exercises, but it was nice to have someone to do them with.

As Luca when to get something to drink, Orah stretched herself gently, arms over her head as she waited. When she got back, the young woman smiled, rolling her shoulders.

"I do think I remember you from school. Its surprising, but I guess not that surprising. Small world, right? Its too bad we didn't get to talk much before this."

Getting down on her back, Orah crossed her arms over her chest and set to her sit ups, doing surprisingly well for someone who didn't make it a habit to work out. Actually, amazingly well... all the lifting and carrying she did at the flower shop seemed to have had a positive effect on her core, because she rocked out those sit-ups in short order. With that done, it was time to take her own break for water, wiping the sweat from her face with the back of her wrist... which really wasn't all that helpful.

"Not sure how the mile is going to go... kind of dreading that." She said softly when she returned to Luca's side, offering her a weak smile. "Ready?"

The mile started out easy enough, but got harder as they went as her endurance ran down. By the end of it she had managed a decent time, but she was breathing hard and had to lift her arms up over her head, her fingers laced behind her hair.

"Ah, boy... that was... a work out." She said as she struggled to catch her breath.

Jeanne actually matched Tallulah's pace, which she was fairly proud of. The entire time, the redhead was grinning. Running and endurance weren't usually her thing, but today - today she was doing pretty damn well. When they finished, she actually laughed a little as she went for water.

"Jus' one more thing, yeah, an' I gotta say, I think we've got this."

Her confidence wasn't unwarranted, she felt. They'd both been doing pretty well, minus her own frankly embarrassing performance in the opening round.

"Hey," said Finn, sitting beside Delilah and offering her her pick of gatorade - Green or Orange. "You finished, right?" he asked. He hadn't seen her be one of the people who gave up halfway through the run, and as long as she'd actually gotten it done then hey - that was great!

"Take a breather," he said, lying down beside her. Damn, he was going to feel this in his legs tomorrow! "You're doing great."

Delilah's hand reached over and she slowly grabbed the Orange one. Lime had never been her favorite flavor. "Yea. I can at least say I did." There was a smile on her face behind the sweat plastered hair on her forehead. "You did really well yourself. I tried keeping up..."

Taking a deep breath, Delilah brought herself up onto her elbows so she could take a drink without spilling it down her shirt. "It's moments like this I wish we had access to a hot tub..." chuckling as she looked around, she could see some were not holding up well. Glancing over, she was glad for the medics. "You are pretty impressive yourself."

A hot tub? Well, it was something to talk to Kaatje about maybe adding to the apartment building renovations, but he doubted she'd go for it. He felt like he'd have more luck convincing her to put some workout equipment in the empty corner of the basement - which sort of ran counter to what Delilah was suggesting.

"I've been at this thing for a while," he said, sitting up and leaning his elbows on his knees as he swigged from his bottle. "Going on - uh - gosh, I guess it's just about three years now?" April of 2011 sounded just about right for when he'd awakened. "And I hike a lot. Rock climb. Kayak. Actually, I'm just a huge dork."

Well, he didn't see anyone lining up to contest him on the issue! Finn stood up and offered Delilah a hand.

"Keep up with your patrols, come to these things whenever Gunn throws them-" He thought she'd heard her say something about once a month? That would be great. "You'll get better. It'll get easier." He shrugged. "Both. We should patrol together sometime."

Kinley watched him take a spot inside the track. He certainly had a lot of confidence after the rough round of sit ups they'd just done. As they took off for their run, she realized he was exactly where he was supposed to be. She didn't ever want to give up, but she definitely trailed him by almost ten minutes! Her cheeks were flushed pink from the exertion by the time she finished her laps and pulled in next to him again, grabbing her water bottle from near by and taking a few long swigs from it. Really, she'd always hated running. Wasn't that a perk of being powered up though? She had noticed that she could run a bit quicker in powered form.

"That was pretty impressive!" Kin said, still catching her breath a bit. She wasn't heaving for air, but she was definitely a little tired. "But you said before, you met a cat for your sister? But not for you? Are you not a Senshi?" She asked, furrowing her eyebrows. She'd just assumed everyone here was a Senshi, because she didn't know any different. Maybe it had been rude to ask, but she hadn't meant for it to be; she was just one of those people who asked whatever popped into her head.
