He slipped on nothing he could see, and his stomach plummeted at the thought that he might find himself again descending and then--the scary part--back among the whispering.
He tried to clutch at the walls, but there was nothing there to support him.
He lifted his voice, nervously: "Bashmet?" A pause, and grudgingly: "America?"

The steps were littered with treacherous shards of glass, and he again found his hand pressed to his side at the nervous idea that he might repeat his initial mistake.
He opened his mouth to call again before the sound of voices drifted up the stairwell. Relief crested in where trepidation had been.

Frowning, America placed a hand on Kostya's torso and looked more closely. "Nothing's stuck in there, right? If it stays in too long, your shield'll start damaging you." A lesson hard learned. "Think he'll get mad if we go back for him?"
"Obadiah is very much mad at us always. You were seeing vhat he did vith coat."
Kostya snorted dispporvingly, and stayed still as America examined him. "Is no cause to be vorry. Syntax say shield at fifty percent."

"No need," said a voice behind them as Taym materialized, looking exhausted and grim and more than a little battered, a hand still pressed to his side more out of instinct than actual need and the other white-knuckled around his knife.
"You," he informed Kostya deliberatey, "owe me one. Or a dozen."
America let out a sigh of relief and turned to to look at him, eyes automatically dropping to the knife. The smile that had been forming halted abruptly and she was looking past him. Down the stairs and into the darkened halls beyond. "You were attacked?"
Her attention was back on Taym a moment later, remembering the previous wound on the steps with a frown, "Your side okay?"
