They were much more skilled at swimming than Mimsy was, as one might expect, and swam circles around her in mockery.

The distance between her and the surface grew noticeably shorter as the sun glittered through the waves. She kicked off of a mermaid to get there more quickly.

Now out of their comfort zone, the mermaids retreated once more. Mimsy only needed to get back to the shore now, and it was no small feat to do so while carrying a bag of rocks.
Still, she was victorious. She sprawled out on the shore and closed her eyes as she caught her breath.
