I played your tank! Yeah, i figured it would be pg-13. I just tend to be rather indepth writer. And I have never seen or heard of fiber bags. Plastic is charged for? How is fiber better?
Charging for bags is now the general rule in Bay Area cities. Some outlaw plastic bags, Berkeley's outlawed styrofoam. Fiber is 'better' in that 1) it isn't banned and 2) it's free advertising for the stores that sell them. (Rofl.) But I suspect they won't last - canvas bags last and can be mended and patched, whereas a hole in a fiber bag is pretty much unmendable. They really should be banned, such a waste.
Hm, I see. And they want us to write a 3 page mini rp post all based around the life of a fiber bag??

Yes, except the rp part is your choice, not mandatory.

1.
(setting) Based on Japan and the four occupations culture. Gunpowder exists, but has never been used in warfare. Innovation in warfare is considered dishonorable, though now it is necessary to drive back a conquering army.
A group who claims to be gods is unknown to the peasants, even those who have no choice but to surrender to them. All they know of are their commanders who swiftly take over towns and villages, having conquered cities within weeks of appearing. Those on top use mental discipline and torture to form obedient armies who lack empathy and their commanders cannot help but worship them.
2.
(characters) A half-elfbarbarian inspired by both Native American and historically accurate 'old west', a half-breed of a peaceful mixing of both groups. Has very odd ideas of ettiquette and propriety, including the lack of land ownership (the natives are migratory).
A human lawyer who used to be a doctor and retains a lot of medical knowledge. He has embraced the darkness and uses magic of darkness worshippers, but has embraced it as a force for good. Having lost a leg to corrupt officials of the government, he spends his time lurking and traveling through shadows, causing those who abuse power to 'disappear'.
A water elemental merfolk, or other 'mer-person' who shows a powerful affinity with water, yet has strayed far from her homeland in hopes of finding or forging a place where the laws are not so harsh and cruel to women, who are wives, mothers, and meant to stay in the house they run.
A young short humanoid creature with black iris pupils and colorful hair. Skilled with holy abilities to heal the weak, sick, and innocent and attack evil magic, as well as the bow. She uses stealth and concealment, as well as war tactics, to help others. Strongly honor-bound, she seeks not only to promote peace and happiness, but also to aid in the balance of nature and civilization. She radiates light when she uses her magic, and her eyes glow like fiery opals.
Take what you like of these and play around with 'em. You don't need to combine anything or keep everything. I'd like to see what people can get from these.

Do the two pieces work together, or are they independent?

Wow! You have been working hard here! I may have to let you run things when I'm not around, you are doing an awesome job of it!
Your story was excellent! Absolutely cute too! I loved how fun and simple it was but you still applied mature and well-thought writing styles to it! It put a smile on my face to read it! biggrin
I_Write_Ivre
You have some very interesting starts! Your plot set-up is classic and easy to adjust to and your characters are vivid and unique! biggrin
I am sure we can use your ideas for our first collaborative piece! A little discussion about characterization (like how we see the characters and how they might develop as the story progresses) and plot and I think we can be ready to write.
That is, unless no one has any objections.
Do you see any of your characters as villains or antagonistic one another? I take it that this story would be a fantasy, so how does that affect your other characters, the army, the peasants and so on.Are there other creatures or people with special abilities? And would it be possible to take the story to another setting, keeping a great deal of traditional Chinese themes but moving the story to a fantasy world.
These are just a few questions and thought! Everyone, feel free to chime in! Tell us what you think!

Welcome! I am glad to have you take interest in our group!
Jellykans was nice enough to explain the gist of what we are doing here but I will just give you a basic summary.
We are creating a group in which writers can post their works and have them collected and read along side the works of other writers. In other words, a collection or anthology.
In this group we have two basic types of stories.
1: A collaborative piece. This is a story that has it's plot and characters created by one or more of the members of the group and all the writers here will take turns writing the story. One person starts and writes a chapter and then the next person writes a chapter. This process will continue until the story is completed. Each writer in the collaboration has the opportunity to work with the story that previous writer left them, build on the ideas of others and come up with their own ideas for the story.
2: A collection. Though the entire group is contributing to a collection of stories, this collection is more specific. Instead of writing the same story with different authors each time (as in the collaboration) we will each write our own stories based on a central theme. Like what JellyKans suggested with the canvas bag. We can do whatever we want with the other parts of the story as long as the central theme remains the same. It could be about a bag, a character, a thing that happened over spring break, a political conspiracy or a fruit stand. The possibilities are endless and each writer will take their own interesting approach to the subject.
That is the basic idea of our group. I hope you find something that you will enjoy here! I look forward to writing with you all!
On a side note, I will soon post the actual group in the O.R.R.G.s. The thread will be complete with rules, membership status, current stories, writing calendar (for collaborations, it will say whose turn it is to write) and links to our completed collections for each month or so.

Thank you very much for your explanation. I understand much better now. Though sadly my writing muse has left me high and dry. x.x I don't really write as much as I used to. I guess I just don't find it as rewarding now, and I've become paranoid about other people stealing my characters, concepts, or what have you. I also have issues with reading things online. The light hurts my eyes when I try to read to much. I find books I can sit and read for hours though. x.x
Thank you very much again for the welcome and the elaboration. I might be around a bit, but I don't think I'll be able to write anything any time soon.

Do you see any of your characters as villains or antagonistic one another?/quote] I see them as protagonists, but that doesn't mean they can't ever be antagonist to each other. Culture clash is, in my opinion, a great thing to add to stories and brings out a lot of the characters and their world.

I take it that this story would be a fantasy, so how does that affect your other characters, the army, the peasants and so on.Are there other creatures or people with special abilities?
I'm not sure if the world influenced by Japan should be fantasy or even if these two ideas overlap. I'm still thinking about it and wondering what others think.
Personally--and I'm not going to get mad if this is done--I make 'races' just more attuned to their environment, such as more agile, better at climbing sheer surfaces, suited for living in rivers or swamps or caves, etc.
ryruko
And would it be possible to take the story to another setting, keeping a great deal of traditional Chinese themes but moving the story to a fantasy world.
Of course. In fact, there's no need to combine these settings or not to add influences of other cultures. You can add the Indian golden age, which also included genocide, anywhere hurt by world war one or two, American restoration, or anything else. Heck, it doesn't have to be perfectly true to history, either.
Excellent! So it seems that we have a very open setting and theme. I really like your ideas with their historical content. A clash of cultures and racial discrimination is a great backdrop for a serious story; I'm honestly and thoroughly impressed!
I see, so did you have your characters separate from the setting you described or were they a part of it? Oh look at me not paying attention, you said first off that they can be combined but don't have to be.
An alternate history would definitely be a cool place to start and I would prefer not involving too much fantasy myself. The way you do it, by making different races with each having their own appearance and capabilities sounds much better than a straight up "swords and wizards world" but that's just my opinion. Not intended to be offensive to our heavy fantasy fans, I enjoy it too.
I'ts also good that you already worked out part of the character's motives. A little more discussion and we can have their backstory and motivation all ready!
I think the characters will take the most discussion, because it may be difficult to write for characters that the other writers can't identify with in some way.
NOTE TO ALL: I think I have decided to do sort of a turn based method of selecting our themes. The designated person will suggest a theme and then hear the input from the other writers. Then we write! A great example would be Jellkans work. She suggested that our first short story collection was the fiber bag story and next it will be someone elses turn!
So if everyone is cool with this system, then Write Ivre can take lead on our first collaboration!

I'm glad! I never really thought I was good at explaining things so this is a great confidence booster! Hahaha!
Oh, I'm sorry, it seems that lack of motivation and inspiration becomes a problem for us all from time to time. There were times where I went two months or more without drawing or writing a thing!
Hopefully you will be able to enjoy this group in some way! Even if you don't feel like writing or reading we could always use another person on board for suggestions, mangement and being an all around writer's friend!
You don't have to feel obligated either, if you just want to come by to share a few thoughts or discuss someone else's idea then please do so!
It's nice to meet you by the way! I hope the writer's block clears up soon!

I'm not sure if I'm a fan of 'heavy' fantasy, but I've never been a fan of one kind of wizard, one king of fighter, one kind of druid, etc. What culture do wizards have? Are wizards from one place or are there many cultures? How does culture affect teaching about magic and vice versa? Is magic for all classes, or is learning magic like a prestigious college? Why can't farmers learn farming magic? What if they do learn farming magic? Etc.

I have more bits to some characters and more characters, but I felt this was a good start. I want to see what ideas others come up with and I'll give more if anyone wants them.

Hahahaha! You make some great points! Pretty much turns the fantasy RP gaming genre upside down! rofl Yes, I think when it comes to fantasy, being grounded in as much realism as possible is the key. It's easier for the reader to accept, visualize and identify with. Not to mention the fact that it's easier to write that way too.
I_Write_Ivre
I see. That makes sense, thank you for being considerate of the writer's ideas! Yes I, too, would like to see everyone's ideas flow freely for a bit. Then we get the chance to see how everybody thinks and what their styles of stories are.
A good place to start would be having each of the writers involved in the collaboration to post their own versions of the suggested main characters.

Well, DC Talk is one of my all time favorite bands. My number one favorite is DeGarmo and Key. And THIS is my favorite song..(if you haven't heard it already, I know you'll love it!) Not to mention, the pictures used are powerful!

Yes! DC Talk is great! They inspired so many other bands too! DeGarmo and Key? I'm might just have heard of them before. This song is great! It reminds me of the first Christian music I ever listened to! Like 4Him and Michael W. Smith! I really do love this song too! whee
