It was a grueling course. Then again whoever participated in a marathon without half expecting it to be physically and mentally demanding on the individual wouldn't have been able to make it this far. Yet despite having signed on for the race with the mindset to persist all the way until the end unless he was forced to drop out at some point as a result of the challenges, Boaz couldn't help the sinking feeling in his heart when he came face to face with the next one.

They were going to have to go through that? This... setup was supposed to be safe right?

He supposed that he couldn't doubt the organizers' decision in this at this juncture. Besides, if it was indeed deemed truly unacceptable and hazardous, an authoritative figure would have likely stepped in by now. Might as well put his best foot forward and take a tremendous leap of faith with this since he couldn't jolly well step away from this now.

Hesitating for a fleeting moment, he tugged his own shirt off, flicked the cap off the bottle of water that he had left untouched the entire time to pour a huge part of its content onto the fabric to wet it thoroughly. Once he was done with that, he went on to secure the wet shirt over his own nose and mouth following which he poured the leftover water over his own bare torso. For what it was worth anyway.

Taking a deep breath to psyche himself, he started dashing towards the fire, trying to ignore the alarm bells that were ringing within him from the blistering heat as he kept his gaze straight ahead towards where he thought the finishing line would be. It would be a sprint from here all the way to the finish if he made it through this one. If not, well he supposed he could swing by the hospital to say hi to his colleagues at the Emergency department while he got himself treated for a couple of first to second degree burn wounds sustained...

Take your chances and run through it. You can’t be that flammable.

Those brave enough to run straight through the flames would find them extinguished even before their skin was scorched, though the warmth lingered on their faces. A team of organizers snuffed the fire out, and Boaz Crawford, Matthias White, and Ian Davis would find themselves cheered on, the sound almost deafening, as they were the first to cross the finish line, in rapid succession.  

After photos were taken and medals awarded, they were invited to a special dinner to celebrate their victory.

Of course, they weren’t the only ones in attendance.

Despite elimination, several runners were paused as they prepared to leave the course, complimented on their performance, whether it be due to personal character, resourcefulness, or sheer strength, and invited to attend, as well. Bjorn Guildson, Leo Torres, and Dennis Terry would also find themselves within the small hall filled with marathon workers, welcome to partake in the abundant spread of food and drink.

After they finished, however, they would learn what the true prize for their performance was.

The doors had quietly been locked, volunteers quietly standing before them as a figure in black armor entered the room. Clapped. Invited them to join a team where their determination would mean something more. Those that accepted had an easier time with the fist around their starseed, though she handled each with care. Eventually, they were all something more.
