Well the first time I heard about it was when I was 7 I guess, a classmate went to the Dutch version of the musical, but it didn't enter my mind again during the next 9 years, then I became a fan of Nightwish, and they covered the title song. I liked the song so when I began taking singing lessons a couple of months ago my teacher asked me what I wanted to sing, so I mentioned I liked stuff by nightwish and some other bands. The next week she copied the music for me and I practiced it by listening to the mp3, I rented the movie and watched it and from that moment I was a phan.

It's quite simple...when I was two my Mother decided to put on the original Broadway cast soundtrack of Phantom of the Opera. When it got to 'Music of the Night' (I'm only remembering this as my Mother told it to me.) I became very quiet and didn't move at all. After the song was over my Mother thought that that was enough and she turned it off. She says she never heard a child scream so outrageously loud before. So she turned it back on and I stayed quiet for the rest of the CD.
Since then I've been driving my parents crazy with all things Phantom related, when I was three I dressed up as Erik for Halloween, I did it again when I was four. When I was five I went to go see the Phantom of the Opera for the first time on stage. People kept coming up to us and asking if it was a good idea to bring a little kid to this show.
Anyway I wasn't an insane phan then...when I heard that they were making a movie version of Phantom I went balistic. (Remember this was before I saw it...*sighs*) I bought the Gaston Leroux book then the Susan Kay one...that seemed to push me over the edge and now I am a happy, obsessed, and rabid Phantom Phan. *bows* ^^

I'm in the boat with Uta and Alexis.. no worries... to be honest the first time I really knew of PotO... was September... and to be honest it was because in this role play I was doing with my GF the characters were performing it and I was loooooooost as hell. So I really saw it for the first time just trying to understand, and now I'm hooked.
But I did hear MotN when I was 9.

Erin Sovenya BakaTulip But I did hear MotN when I was 9. Hah! See!? There's a story to that! My mom knew this guy online who loved broadway music and he sent us this tape with lots of good stuff. Man of La Mancha, Les Miz, West Side Story, lots of stuff. The only reason I know MotN was on there was because I asked my mom about it a few months ago. The only song I really remember from the tape is "Last Night of the World" from Miss Saigon (which I saw over the summer and was bawling thoughout the second act).

I actually got into POTO through snowglobes.
Y'see, I was all into snowglobes as a kid. Just liked to sit and watch them. Le parents thought it was weird, but catered to it in their own morbid way by giving me lots of spooky, evil snowglobes. So for Christmas when I was nine I got one with a gargoyle in it, and it played MOTN. The tune was all pretties, so I asked various relatives if they knew what it was that I might get a CD.
Mother: "Isn't it from that musical... about that ghost guy...?" Me: "*pondering* Music about ghooosts? Hmmm..."
I was all into ghosts and stuff, so that was tres cool. And when I found out that it was a book too I just had to get it. So I got the book, thinking it'd be about ghosts, and got all hooked on POTO instead. To my luck, the musical was here on tour that year and I got to see it and yaaay. That was like... ten years ago. *snrk*

Oh boy, this could take awhile:
My first exposure to anything Phantom related was in 1990. I was staying at my grandparents house since my parents where out of town due to the fact that my uncle was having open heart surgery. My grandmother was an english teacher, so she decided to watch the made for tv version of Phantom of the Opera that was playing that week to see how accurate it was to the book. I was very young, but remembered loving Erik right away. I loved the look he had. Of course that version is utter camp and has next to nothing to do with the book, but I wouldn't realize that til a much later viewing.
Over the years I began a major film nut and the Lon Chaney version became attached to my all-time favorite classic film lists. The movie is still excellent and a joy to watch to this day.
I still wasn't a phan, just casual observer. High school came about and I was a choir/theatre student who also happened to be in french classes. Through the combination of these three elements I happened upon the musical version of PotO. I loved the music right away and had the entirety of the score memorized in about a week.
What really drove me over the edge was going on to France with my french class my junior year and seeing the Opera House in person. I was awestruck by it and all the memories of the various versions came flooding back to me. As soon as I returned from Paris, I devoured everything PotO I could find. From the original book to the camptasticness of Phantom of the Paradise. Yes since that fateful day, Erik is here, inside my mind.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I first saw it with my boyfriend. He had been dying to see it, so I rented it and we watched it when he came over. Watching it with him was so romantic! So now whenever I hear a song from it or watch the movie, I automatically think of him, (sings) think of him fondly . . . (stops) sorry, got carried away.
I'm just sorry I was sick and missed his Pops Night performance when he sang as Erik! I'll bet he was amazing.
Plus, it's just an amazing movie. Some parts send shivers down my spine, others bring tears to my eyes. And the music is amazing! I just wish I had the vocal range to sing it! and I'm a drama geek, so I love musicals in general.

Pink Snow Blossom, you're relationship with your boyfriend is so sweet, everytime I read it you give me goosebumps, girl! XD I'd love to have a guy that appreciates that. And can sing. God ... After Phantom, I'm like, 'I HAVE TO HAVE A GUY THAT CAN SING.' -exageration-
Anywhooo.
My first Phantom-realization was when I went to my friends house and we watched the movie, long, long time ago, early Janurary of 2005. Everytime she called, she talked about Phantom, Phantom, Phantom, and finally, we watched the movie. My mind wasn't hooked onto it then, so I just said 'Yeah, a good movie.' and that's all.
Later that year, during Band trips and such, my new friends I made all adored Phantom - watched it at the end of the year, all the time, and that's when I started getting curious. What made me not like it when I first saw it? It didn't bother me as much, so, I went on.
On many band trips, my mind was hooked on the "Phantom of the Opera" song on the CD. Must be my love for classical/rock type of combinations. I enjoyed singing it with my friends, but didn't feel right since I didn't know about it enough. Sooner or later, I got the CD and knew I was hooked then and there forever. <33
I soon had all the songs memorized, had seen the DVD and enjoyed it to death, and soon owned the DVD, memorized it, gotten sheet music for my trombone, seen it on Broadway, finished the book, and have had obsessions with anything Phantom related. All because of my curiousity. XD "It's a women's curiousity!..." Like Christine said in the book. XD
[/end long and painful life story]

My dad is not a "normal" dad. (Hes like into musicals, operas, not football sports, etc.) Anyway when he was young and living in Cambodia he liked to read A LOT and he read the POTO novel and others too, but but before I bore people to death sweatdrop Ill get to the point. He told me about he went to see the opera with my mom many years ago and told me to listen to it. I did and fell in love with (I was about 6 or 7) it, but I only listen to the first CD and never the second one. I got to see the actual musical about 2 years later (but sincew i was so young i never really understood it, I just liked the music) and when I found about the movie I got completely obsessed with (then i was old enough to get into the movie and feel the sadness of Erik heart ) Now that i got the movie on DVD i actually watch it every morning till school then listen to it on my ipod. (And i still havent gotten sick of it). YAY! lol TEE HEE! sweatdrop WOW! that was long sorry(to anybody who got this far) i just love this topic whee
