Gauden knew better than most to move away from a rampaging animal, but this was different. There was more anger here than was usually seen in most animals, and it hit the hatchlings with a vengeance. Gauden tensed as their fight slowly moved towards the girls, and he even took a few steps forward in an unconscious start at going to help them. He stopped, staring, waiting for the moment that the dragonets breached the first line of girls. Melina's shout drew his attention to her and he saw her scatter with the rest to get out of the way. He eyes swept over faces he knew and ones he didn't. Finally, Gauden's eyes spotted and stopped on Cetalese, who he had finally gotten a name for not even a sevenday ago, moving down the line and taking another girl with her. It seemed as if her entire attention was taken by the Hatchlings. He glanced back to Melina, concerned but knowing that he wasn't supposed to change over to their side. The Clutch was between them-- it would be too late and O'rer-- not to mention anyone else at the weyr-- would be furious.

Don't get mauled, he half-hoped as he looked between the large group of girls and the dragons, keeping an eye on the faces he knew.

After the happy impression of the bronze D'lin had thought things would go pretty smoothly...even if the little green had yet to choose. Of course he was wrong and Plexith warbled in both a worried and a scolding tone as the two newest hatchlings began to fight with one another.

They seemed to be moving towards the girls and D'lin glanced to where they waited..most seemed to be moving out of the way and while he didn't spot Lilias in the sea of white robes he didn't see her in the direct path of the fighters either so..that was something at least right? He thought about having Plexith speak her..but that might just distract her so he refrained and merely watched with furrowed brows.

Ahhh, this Hatching certainly was heating up.

Ruven held his ground as the bronze approached him. It probably was never wise to get in an Impressing dragonette’s way, but backing down from anything was not in the redhead’s character. When the newborn creature stopped to regard him, his mind began to quicken. Why was it lingering on him? Was this bronze his? It certainly would make sense if he Impressed a bronze. Before he allowed himself to get his hopes up, he realized that although the small one had a slight interest in him, he wasn’t feeling anything. If this Hatching -> Bonding experience was going to be anything near as spectacular as the Touching had been, then this mottled creature before him could definitely not be His. When it turned away and Impressed another boy, Ruven gave himself a mental nod of approval, proud that he had not been fooled. Then, he clapped for the first Impression (that was only polite, yes?).

The bronze had been quite the sight, but Ruven’s dragon would be a thousand times better. His wouldn’t have the gall to tease other candidates. His would find him straightaway at the front of the boy’s group. Naturally.

The orbiting green was keeping up her usual antics. Instead of Impressing (he was beginning to wonder if she realized she was putting Hers through some unnecessary stress by making him or her wait), she prodded around at her siblings. Suddenly, almost explosively, a blue hatched. Almost simultaneously the clouded egg's inhabitant emerged. The two bumped into each other and began to hiss… was this a fight?

Ruven was partiall amused by the display but even more so concerned that they might injure each other. Even worse, their scuffle might end with one of them going in between. On behalf of their future riders, he crossed his fingers and hoped that things would not go that far.

----------------

Aeri was not particularly interested in the bronze dragon’s Impression. She had stood no chance of Impressing that one, so she had not been paying him any attention. Instead, her eyes had been pinned on the now shaking clouded egg. That one was one of her favorites during the Touching. Perhaps it would give her a better show? It did not disappoint.

When the explosive egg burst into life (another creature she strongly approved of!), he and the newly hatched green began to scuffle. Interesting, interesting. Even though she was smaller, the little female seemed to have the upper hand. When the fighting gravitated in her direction, Aeri wisely took a few steps back. What would come of this?

Hah. Maybe one of her pitiful peers would get caught in the crossfire and mauled. That would be unfortunate (and entertaining). She feared for neither dragon’s life. Both of them were strong. They would be fine.

N'ymi sat up high from the hatching grounds on top of her blue, Daroth. It was a huge clutch and she was pleased that things were going well. A change in leadership really didn't bother her. In her eyes, the Weyrwoman ran things anyways. Stroking her love's neck, she spoke softly to him. "'Member our day love? You're so sure of yerself an' I was ther', waitin' fer you ta choose me."

It seems so long ago. This clutch is a good one. Everyone will find theirs and the gold will hatch and be good. Soon we will be in a wing and flying strong. The unique blue huffed slightly.

Kallista was in the stands with Astarteth sunning herself back at their weyr. The green was not in the mood to be in the heights and would watch the Hatching through her rider's eyes. She kept her thoughts hopeful as Allaxon would be standing for this big, fine clutch.

He will do fine. Astarteth yawned. Let me know if anything interesting happens. The green settled not quite into slumber but a nice happy and quiet mode.
`````````````````````````````
That is a fine looking bronze, don't you agree? Iweith commented to his rider. The brown was settled with some other dragons that he got along with and having arrived early, had a good spot to watch the hatching. I wonder if they were all be so brightly colored?
Doesn't matter if they are. Your colors are just fine, you don't need fancy patterns. V'tur replied. He was higher up in the stands watching the green and blue wander around. The little ones were making a sight and sound. Which in his mind meant their were strong and sure of themselves. But a little worried, he leaned forward to wake the rest of the event.
As the crowd of girls parted the dragon continued to fight, leaping at one another and swiping and snapping their jaws but never actually managing to land a blow on one another. One particularly clumsy leap out of the way by the clouded green led to her nearly landing on Nawa, and as she scrambled upright to launch another assault of her own a stray swipe of her right hind claws opened two nasty cuts on the girl's calf. Although the wounds would bleed quite heavily she was in no danger of death, and could safely remain on the sands if she or somebody else tore some strips off their robe to make bandages.
As the clouded green sprung the explosive blue dodged rather deftly hissing furiously and snapping his jaws at his sister. The clouded green spun aside and then jumped at the blue again but this time when he dodged instead of landing with all four feet on the sand, the very tips of her left foreclaws sliced down Peradan's left thigh and knocking the candidate down. As Peradan fell the clouded green gave a very different cry, her eyes turning grey and streaking with yellow. As the explosive blue charged again the clouded green did not run. Giving a bellow that would not have shamed a full grown dragon she stood her ground, turned to face him and flared her wings.
"Peradan you are Nebulath's! You were a fool not to move, I was a fool to fight but we will learn, and for now I will not let him touch you!"
Just as it looked as though the explosive blue would tear his sister apart, however, a roar evener more ear-splitting than Nebulath's echoed across the sands and the blue sprang back as though he had been burned. Brakiath, it seemed, had finally had enough. Thouroughly cowed the explosive blue back away from the scattered female candidates keening quietly, his eyes grey with sorrow. Disaster, it seemed, had been averted.
In all the commotion the orbiting green had scurried away to hide behind the luminous egg, but as the snarls ceased she peeked out again and creeled uncertainly, looking for reassurance. Apparently the calmed tempers alone were enough to calm her down too, for after a few moments she stepped out from behind the queen egg and headed over to the tailing trail egg, which had started to rock in earnest at some point during the commotion with the battling siblings.
Melina gave a rather audible sigh in relief, though there were some injuries. She was a star smith though, no healer, and she didn't exactly know what to do. She settled on staying out of the way - the healers would need to get to the injured girls and she would probably only be in their way.
Instead she stared out at the hatchlings - the blue was slinking away but seemed quite scared. Was she allowed to try and comfort him? She didn't know, but her sympathy went out to both the dragonets currently on the sands and rider-less.
She slowly made her way back to where the girls had all been standing before the fight broke out and stood, as hard as it was with the hot sands and the acrid smell of freshly spilled blood. They had a Hatching to stand, and potential dragons to partner with. They could not fail Theirs, whether Theirs were here in this clutch, or yet to be laid. Stout and resolute, she stood, her short stocky figure in a white robe too long for her, trying to look dignified and unshaken.
Eek! Though the first wound wasn't dire, it certainly couldn't be pleasant. The next wound caused by the green led, oddly enough, to Impression--or so Lena surmised by look on Peradan's face. Good for her, though! Lena certainly hadn't fancied the dragon's temper, but Peradan had seemed a kind enough sort at the party she'd hosted. Lena felt much better about the hatchling knowing she'd Impressed to a person Lena had decided she liked. The blue seemed as if he wouldn't be stopped--until his mother intervened. The grey of his eyes worried Lena a bit; hopefully he'd recover from his scolding and get to investigating the candidates to find His sooner than later, for his own sake.
Lena stifled an inappropriate chuckle at the sight of the green hatchling poking her head out uncertainly from behind the gold egg. But she didn't seem to stay uncertain for long, moving over to her next sibling to hatch. The tailing trail egg had been another Lena'd rather liked the touch of, and its temperament had been less...worrisome, than some of the others. Lena did wonder if the little green first to hatch intended to midwife all her siblings out onto the Sands before finding Hers though; perhaps she simply wanted them to have first choice?
Cetalese stilled as the Green reached the first girl, several feet from where she and Eliza had ended up. She kept a close eye on them, but the pair never came back Eliza and Ceta's way. In fact, Cetalese could tell from her angle that as the Green managed to swipe Peradan, her eye color changed almost immediately. The cry she let out was clearly not the challenge it had been before and Cetalese lifted her chin slightly, recognizing-- she thought-- the signs of an Impression.
Yes, she did. The Green defended her new rider against the Blue that was only attacking because of her, but she did it with a great show of strength. Cetalese watched carefyully, but never had the chance-- thankfully-- to see if the Green could have kept her Own from being further damaged by the Blue. Brakiath's roar split the air and Cetalese released Eliza to cover her ears agianst it. She slowly removed them as the Blue, eyes gray now, stumbled back and away from the Green and Peradan.
Cetalese continued to watch both just in case, but her watchful gaze looked for the Green from earlier. She looked fine, hiding as she was behind the Queen egg, and proved it by soon after bounding off to inspect another of her Clutchmates. Cetalese's eyes glanced back to the luminous egg, still sitting quietly in the middle of her slowly hatching brothers and sisters, and then moved back to where the other Green had gone. Which egg did she see hatching now? Cetalese turned her head without taking her eyes from the Green to say quietly to Eliza, "At least now we'll all be ready to move if some of those other eggs have the same idea."
She was glad that nothing worse happened. And Narisa wasn't able to restrain herself from giving a very soft cheer for Peradan. Her fellow vintner had Impressed! And the green (now that she wasn't attacking the blue) was lovely. Narisa winced at the sight of Peradan's arm, hoping it wasn't too bad. The first injury of the Hatching. "At least they aren't fighting anymore." She murmured and gave Peradan another smile, eyes immediately going to the golden Queen when she bellowed at the dragonets. Well, it looked like she had had enough.
Glancing towards the two dragonets milling about the sands, her eyes were drawn to a new egg that was rocking. Her excitement grew, curious to see what dragonet would come out of this egg next! And to see who of her fellows would Impress next as well.
Gauden took a deep breath as the fight came to a standstill and finally was stopped entirely by a roar from Brakiath that made his ears ring. He covered one ear with a hand and rubbed at it, trying to hold back a wince. The small green's cry had been impressive; Brakiath's was beyond that. It didn't rattle him enough for him not to be glad that the fighting had stopped, though. The Blue had scattered away from the girls, clearly thoroughly chastised, and it seemed as if... the Green had Impressed the girl she'd been beside when she had made her stand against the Blue. Protecting her?
Gauden's attention was drawn by the first and remaining Green scampered towards the boys to check out the rocking tailing trail egg. Having been interested in the egg during the Touching, Gauden, too, focused his attention there, though the Blue was still out and about, likely recovering from his scolding. The egg was rocking and, judging from the Green's interest, it might soon get more than just its rocking to help it break loose.
Oh, a bronze! That was certainly unexpected. Peradan half expected that a bronze dragon would have held off to make a grander entrance, but apparently not. He certainly seemed close to the wandering little green though. And much to Peradan's surprise, the bronze was heading for the women first, and not the men. Now that wasn't correct! She knew with one hundred percent certainty that bronzes only Impressed to men, so why was he heading their direction? Clearly there was only one possible solution- one of the girls was in fact a boy! They had disguised it well, but no one could disguise their gender well enough to fool a dragon.
Then the bronze was politely nosing /her/. Well, she wasn't a boy. Oh, but now he was going back to his proper place. Did that mean one of the women wasn't disguised as a man? Peradan couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed. Oh, but was the bronze going towards Ruven? After he had come forward to apologize Peradan had thought much better of him, and it would be rather exciting if someone she knew Impressed the friendly bronze. But Peradan was wrong (and, if she was honest with herself, slightly disappointed again). The bronze had paired off with Hesian, who Peradan didn't truly know at all. But they both looked so happy that she had to clap for them- how could she say no to those faces? And the first Impression had been made!
Now there was the wandering green to contend with. Was she really not ready to make an Impression yet? Now she was back among her brothers and sisters. How long could a dragon go without making a bond? Apparently quite some time, because this little girl didn't look to be in any particular hurry. It was rather annoying, to tell the truth. Peradan felt anxious for her, and she couldn't be the only Candidate to do so. Every time the green swung near, she wanted to shout that Impression had to be made, to hurry up, to stop teasing... But she stood and waited like a good girl, still shifting from foot to foot and trying to keep her spirits up. One egg Impressed, the entire clutch to go.
Then the green swung close to the explosive egg, and all hell broke loose. The blue that hatched did not look pleased with any part of his life- from the egg he seemed vicious and unpleasant. Peradan could only frown in response, wondering who would be stuck with such a bad tempered little creature. On the plus side, what Xan had said about blues being grumpy was apparently very true.
In the course of his action, the blue had knocked open another egg, spilling out an equally displeased green. Peradan found herself holding her breath, hoping that the green would forgive the blue, that everything would be okay... But then they began to fight. Were they capable of hurting each other so fresh out of the shell? The green was quick, but the blue was out for revenge, and they were moving closer and closer to the female Candidates now. Like the others, Peradan took a nervous step back, trying to avoid the flurry of claws and teeth. Couldn't they do anything to stop them from fighting? But no, they couldn't interfere. But what if the two killed each other? Peradan bit her lower lip, rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet. Someone had to do something, and soon! But Peradan soon found herself standing her ground, too entranced by the fighting to get properly out of the way, even when Nawa was knocked to the ground and scratched by the angry green.
Not moving out of the way ended up being a costly mistake. Peradan felt something heavy slam into her, claws raking into her thigh. The green was now physically on top of her, at least partially. Shards, that hurt. Wasn't anyone going to help her?
Peradan you are Nebulath's! You were a fool not to move, I was a fool to fight but we will learn, and for now I will not let him touch you!
What was that voice in her head? It wasn't her own. Then Peradan locked eyes with the green, and it was as if she had fallen into the green's skin. She was acutely aware of a hunger and an anger that was not her own, as well as a worried affection that was part hers, part dragon. Despite the fact that Nebulath had scored her leg, Peradan thought she had never seen a more beautiful dragon (or a louder one). Beautiful, courageous, defensive... Practical? Yes, practical. Nebulath already had a good head on her shoulders. Nebulath.
"Her name is Nebulath," she wondered out loud. Her emotions were interwoven entirely with the green's, and Peradan could have sat there for hours, simply staring at her new dragon, marveling over every inch of hide. Luckily, Nebulath wouldn't.
You'll burn if you keep sitting there, she said in a tart tone. I hunger. You'll feed me now. Food, yes.
Still bleeding, but too blissful to pay any real attention to it, Peradan led her dragon off the sands.
"No!" Before Balt could take more than a step out of line Brakiath's roar tore across the sands. Balt clasped his hands over his ears, eyes squeezed shut as tears threatened at his cheeks from the horrible sound. <********, ********, ********> When Balt opened his eyes the crowd of girls was already swarming around the two injured candidates. His eyes darted over the group, unable to make sense of the confusion. He had failed to do anything. If he had moved sooner he might have made a difference. He cursed under his breath, wiping his sleeve across his eyes.
Later he would realize that had he acted on his first impulse he would have only injured himself or made things worse. Everything happened too fast and he wasn’t close enough. As the crowd swarmed he turned his attention to the blue dragonet. Was he hurt, too? With all that goo it was hard to tell. He certainly didn’t blame the hatchlings for their behavior. He even expected it, only he thought for sure he would be the one in the cross-fire. Danger never bothered him. That was why he wanted so badly to Impress and fight the thread; he knew he was perfect for the job. Those poor dragons. Those poor girls. He made a mental note to go and see whoever had been hurt after the hatching. Right now he would rather not know, it would only distract him. He studied the sands and tried to work out what on Pern happened.
He felt fairly certain the two fighting dragonets came from the explosive egg and clouded egg respectively. In the aftermath it was hard to remember which was which, but he eventually settlted on the blue hatchling being from the explosive egg. He half-hoped he was wrong, because he bet on a blue dragon coming out of the clouded egg and a green from the other. The betting party seemed a bit distant now. He wiped his face again, taking a deep breath.
At this point he realized the clouded green was no longer on the sands. Afraid it had gone between, he glanced over to the girl’s side again and spotted it amongst the crowd, seeming much calmer from what he could tell. He looked away quickly, smiling at the sands. Amazing creatures, dragons.
-----------------------------------------------
Balt did not look up into the stands, so he missed seeing his father, Pavel, watching him with bated breath. Normally too busy preparing the post-hatching feast, the late hour of this hatching allowed him to watch his son Stand for the first time. He was biting his nails, a habit he thought he kicked after he got into pastries. The last three times Balt Stood he felt secretly grateful for his prior obligation. Hatching brought back regrets he would rather pretend he didn’t have.
As soon as the dragonets started fighting Pavel felt the urge to stand up and shout. He would have, too, if he wasn’t so afraid the dragonets would turn on the boys the moment he distracted Balt. The look on Balt’s face didn’t sit well with him at all. He knew Balt had some crazy idea in his head. When the Queen finally put a stop to the fighting Pavel practically collapsed, relieved that he wouldn’t have to watch his son get hurt. That boy had too much of his mother in him.
Still obviously deflated, the explosive blue slunk away from the girls and in amongst the boys. Of his earlier violence there was no sign at all, in fact now he seemed the most placid dragon hatched so far. Every so often he came to a halt and lifted his head, almost as if he was sniffing the air to find his rider's scent. It seemed that he was getting warmer, for every time he stopped his eyes became a little less grey and a little more blue-green.
While the explosive blue made progress, the orbiting green patted gently at the tailing trail egg with one forepaw, squeaking and chirping encouragement at it: she wanted to meet her next sibling now! As if on cue, the small egg burst open causing the poor orbiting green to leap back yet again. It only took her a moment to recover this time however, as the newly emerged green trilled at her in a friendly fashion and stepped forward to say hello.
As the two greens greeted one another, the explosive blue seemed to be nearing his goal. Eyes now quite a bright shade of teal he rose up briefly on his hind legs to see in amongst the male candidates towards the middle of the pack. An elated cry announced his success, and he pushed carefully through the boys until he reached Navarre.
"Oh Navarre Mine! I found you at last! Your Novath is ready to go now, we should go quickly before Nebulath eats all the best meat!"
The blue appeared to be on the trail of something as his eyes slowly shifted color from grey, and Lena breathed a sigh of relief. He was heading towards the boys, so perhaps they would get another Impression?
Lena couldn't keep her eyes off the orbiting green for long though, not when her squeaks and chirps apparently produced so much success--when the tailing trail egg broke shell, it produced another green. The orbiting green seemed to be recovering from her surprises more quickly now, as the other trilled back. Perhaps that greenrider had been right--the sweetest eggs did bring friendly greens.
She chanced a glance over to the boys' side to see what had come of the blue's progress at the dragon's cry, and smiled faintly to see Impression clearly made. Well, that was three done, two on the Sands, and half the clutch yet to go?
Balt gingerly stepped aside as the explosive blue made his way through the boys’ group. He could tell right away this dragon had no interest in him – he thought it was a little, well, explosive anyway – but was pleased to see it was unharmed. A handsome fellow, too! He fit right in on this starry night.
Another green had appeared on the sands. Balt frowned slightly. While it wasn’t unheard of for greens to Impress men, he couldn’t say he expected any interest from them. In his opinion greens were for girls. Had a fight not broken out so suddenly he would have had time to feel disappointed over the color of the clouded dragonet. Of the smaller colors he would much rather have a blue or a black.
