Yarneth breathed a sigh of relief, the slug had gotten out of control, and his powers were taxed to the limit. He had planned to go to Latent himself as Edward Yaits, but he couldn't risk it now, not in the condition he was in. He sense was blocked, so he didn't know entirely what had happened, but it was like the slug had... vanished. It was for the best, he had never intended for the beast to grow that strong, it was supposed to be a minor annoyance, but it had gone out of control. Still, Yait's Corp had suffered the loss of an entre branch office, it would be an incredible sympathy ploy. And Red was probably dead as a bonus, he couldn't sense her mind at the moment anyway.

But as for right now, he was damn tired, his arm collapsed limply over his arm chair. A deep wound over his thumb still dripping blood.

Also, somehow Yarneth had projected his teleportation against the power of a certain technique, by pure accident and dumbluck. But the accident had left him with a splitting migraine that was ruining his concentration and his sleep. And he would suffer a further loss of his powers for a while.

Location: Charity Hospital

One new patients was bought into the ICU, the other went directly to the surgical unit. A team of five top surgeons were dispatched to put Vahn's arm back together again. When they were finished, it would look like the arm of Frankenstein, not only stitched, but stapled, stitched, and glued back together. Still, the operation was success, and Vahn's arm would heal, though he might have a pattern of long thin scars to show for it, and some of the doctors doubted wether he'd actually be able to get the full use out of it ever again. But he hadn't lost it, when he awoke, still doped up on sedatives and painkillers, he would not be the one armed man.

Lucind would be in the next room. Her skin grafts healing beyond all expectations, but still in a deep sleep the medical staff couldn't figure out. To be extra careful, bloodwork was done five times on each patients, though the records would only show three for each.

Location: Recently finished Yaits Corp headquaters. Basement 2, Laboratory A1 AA.

The blood samples that were never taken went into cold storage for the time being. Deep within the exceedingly secure confines of the Yaits Corporate Headquaters. The sliding titanium-adamantium door into the laboratory itself required retinal scanning, DNA verification, hand print scan, and voice recognition. The same would be required for cold storage entry. Dr. Ishkugawa, was the head of the laboratory, a trusted Yaits profesional and now part of the elite science team. Branded a madman by his peers, the good doctor had nowhere else to go until Yaits offered to fund him. Realizing his twisted genius, Yaits made him head of the science team of laboratory A1 AA before it was even constructed, now it was where all the real good stuff was going down. The doctor became a fanatical Yaits loyalist after a few brief meetings and conversations, so he was a trustworthy servent, tried and true. One of the few reliable employees Yaits had found, one of the few that could be allowed to know what was really going on.

"My babies," he said, fondly, placing the sample into cold storage, "So many possibilities, think of the possibilities. I wonder what I should study first."

The Isles inside the cold storage locker would be clearly labeled. Ten vials of blood for each set.

Vahn Kyonuske, Two sets, One vial pure, 19 post donation (Consider impure, specimens contaminated to some degree above fifty percent due to influx of donated blood.)

Lucind Varheel, Two set, Pure specimens, 20 vials.

Joseph Brown, One set, Pure specimens, 10 vials.

Working alone, for now, he took a few vials of Joseph's blood and set them in a centerfuge. He went to the file room, using his unique genetic data to open the door, and pulled out the medical file on Brown. Time to conduct a few simple tests. Of course, in Yaits Corporate headquarters, no one was ever completely alone.

He had no waking memory of being moved.

It would have been a miracle if he had after all. Statistical odds against him and medical records not withstanding...

So he slept.

His breathing had long since became normal, his vitals stabilized via transportation and overall condition improved upon arrival. He would not even have any knowledge of the surgery.

No pain.

No shock.

No life flashing before his eyes.

Just... darkness.

For now.

Water all around her.

Warm water. Yet, that was only an illusion, what her soul wanted to make her feel. Safe. Soothing.
She'd always understood why some of them decided to never leave this place again, even though it meant finally cutting off the connection between soul and body - an acceptable price for those who had become too weary of bothering with life any longer.

Arms hugging knees. Blue strands floating like sea plants, brushing against her face and dancing along with the fabric of the loose fitting robe she was wearing.

Nothing had changed during the last three days, apart from her being close to the surface where she could perceive everything around after the others had brought her back from several levels beneath - it had saved her life....but all Lucind could remember was this growing, luring urge to go deep down...deeper and deeper where... She had forgotten what exactly she had hoped to find there.

Hetel and Mildroa had built a kind of invisible cabin around her so she could sleep undisturbed while her body was being repaired and fixed. During the last hours though, Lucind's own psychic power had more and more taken over this job.

Then - it was early in the morning of the fourth day - the Half-Siren felt her body slowly rising without doing anything herself.
Ah...can I go back then? She smiled and made lazy strokes to reach the light beyond the ocean's surface.

In the hospital room, the medical machines would register an increase of cerebral activity.

Standing on the water, Lucind nodded at her clan leader and her aunt.
"I leave then."

"Watch out at the gate. Exiting will be quite rough this time - but we're right behind you."

"...uhn." She turned around and made a few steps when suddenly a thin wall of water arose in front of her. Without hesitating Lucind stepped through and was greeted by utter darkness: only directly behind the water-veil blueish gleaming and glittering enabled her to see.

"It's okay, Lucind. You can let go now. ... We help you..."

"What...what's she doing there? - Why doesn't she cut the connection? Maybe she's--"

"Scared? No. Look..." Pale yellow eyes were narrowed in concern.

"This aura again... But different this time. Not as aggressive. - Its shape has changed..."

"And yet it's still working as a shield. It's like...she doesn't want us to help..."

Behind the water gate, the lhor aven's exit, Lucind stared right into the darkness behind - but with one hand still touching the veil.

The woman was obviously regaining consciousness. But all vital signs suddenly reacted as if they had been pushed, such as heart frequence, breathing, blood pressure etc. - everything worked on high speed. In addition, without any warning Lucind's eyes shot open, her pupils the size of a pinhead hastily wandered from one side to the other and wouldn't react on any other stimuli such as light.

Just like a computer being rebooted, brain and mind started working again once the soul settled down in its original place, all ties to the lhor aven cut...except from one.
Which data had been lost, which memories saved? The result was to be revealed now.

For about thirty seconds Lucind lied there with dilated eyes until her vital signs reached a critical point---and then everything went silent and back to normal. However, anyone around within a radius of thirty feet would feel an invisible and somehow unplesant wave washing past him, maybe leaving goose flesh, making him gulp or causing that twinge in your chest you feel when you're on the verge of crying.
It was quite similar to the effect of Lucind's song which had activated the tower of Babel, though much weaker...
And if there was any machine around able to visualize psionic activity, it would show a single, faint outburst of such energy, leaving Lucind's body like a ring on stirred water. After ten feet however, the circular shape was broken and instead single shreds like tentacles leaked forward...until they faded and with them every device of psionic energy.

The Half-Siren however slowly closed her eyes. And before she drifted back into a deep, non-comatose sleep, a soft smile on her lips, you could hear her faintly humming some melody.
Who could say what she was seeing....

A doctor was called in, and on the verge of administering something to bring down the vital signs before everything stabilized and the feeling washed over the hospital floor. But once she settled into the sleep they would realize it was 'all good'. So little would be done except debate among the doctors wether she needed drugs to help stabilize her vitals.

There would be no watchers to catch the sensation, there would be nothing more than the security footage and the second hand accounts.

Hey...

It was just hitting the stroke of midnight... all was quiet save for the steady hum of machinery.

Hey... wake up.

A chest rose and fell ever so slightly, even as the ring finger on his left arm twitched.

Wake up, you b*****d.

Everything was in a daze. His vision was blurred, and his muscles were stiff. It took several minutes and a long stretch of silence for his eyesight to even somewhat correct properly.

He stared right up at a ceiling.

W...her...e...?

His breathing still came and left softly, the dull sensation on the right side of his body barely felt. He was groggy, exhausted and felt more hopped up than an addict.

It seemed his body couldn't adjust while it was at rest... and the strain suffered by his body had been enough to even dampen if not completely burn out his limited healing factor.

He moved his body to the left, yanking his right arm as well and pulling several I.V.'s loose. His entire right side was limp... and both feet were asleep.

An attempt at gettingout of bed was met with utter failure, as a soft thudd was heard.

Laying on the ground there, bedsheets and linen half twisted about his nude waist he stared forward. His breathing was slightly more shallow now... as he started dragging himself along... trying to find some purchase to lift himself back up.

He couldn't even think straight...

Lucind Varhetel

PostPosted: Thu Apr 27, 2006 8:17 am

She had been asleep for another twelve hours before Lucind woke up a second time - or this time really woke up, although she faintly remembered a buzzing ruckus in her head which had made her dizzy to the point she thought she was fainting. But then it had stopped for she had hold on to a particulary nice memory of her family. The 'system check' had gone on in the background, but those images helped her to relax: her mother was there, her father even...and Larhien. Ages ago, it seemed.

The woman carefully turned her head to both sides to scan the unknown room. Well, it was easy to tell this was some sort of medical station, but why...? She yawned and wanted to lift her hand to rub her eyes, only to find out that-

"What the...? - Other hand, too. Like a freakin' mummy."

Legs? Worked and obviously weren't heavily bandaged just like her hands and forarms, even her fingers were fixed so that she wasn't able to move them. A drip's needle stuck under her skin right above where the dressing ended. Some plasters here and there. Also, her ribcage felt strangely restricted and Lucind wondered if she had managed to crash it again. She thought to feel her skin stretching and itching under her right breast.

The woman tried to sit up which turned out to be a tough job without using her hands and whatever dazing drugs which were running through her veins. She could've blocked them to a certain degree but surely there was a good reason for their usage - even though Lucind had no idea what happened to her.

*

In the evening the Half-Siren asked one of the medics if it was okay to walk a few steps. Thus, after making sure her cycle allowed her to undertake this strain, clad in a plain bathrobe, Lucind shuffled out of her room, pulling a wheeled stand with her from which the drip's bag dangled.
Turning left, the woman walked over to the next room: through its window next to the door and blinds behind the glass she could see Vahn.

His state was non better than hers. Someone from the hospital's staff had filled her in what kind of wounds both of them suffered from. Without any details being given Lucind could tell there had been or were many unanswered questions on the part of the physics. Still, something kept her from going into details herself, thus she had only explained her coma was some kind of self-defense mechanism inherited from her Siren side.

For a moment, the woman watched her face being reflected in the glass.
The face frowned back.

When she reached her rooms door, Lucind had to admit it was enough, she couldn't take more at the moment. Black dots danced in front of her eyes when someone helped her back into the bed.

*

"..."

It must've been in the night when something got her out of a light sleep filled with strange dreams: obviously, her mind was still busy adjusting her mental structures.

"...?"

Machines bleeped nearby. It sounded like an alarm. Only a few seconds later, she heard several people hasting along the corridor and into Vahn's room.

A heavy set nurse entered the hospital room assisted by three strapping orderlys. They would get him from every side in case there was a struggle. They weren't too worried about him pulling out the stiches and staple, a reacton like this was anticipated so the stitching was done more than thoroughly. The staff were somewhat confident that the medicines would keep him sedated.

"Mmmmmm, mmmmmm child!" chided Denise, "What's the matter with you. You keep rousting yourself around like this and you're never gonna heal. We'll have to keep an orderly in here with you and put you in restraints, now you don't want that, do you?

Barring a struggle, they would get him back in the adjustable bed, the I.V. units were reconnected, bow primarily for hydration and antibiotic purposes, the diazepam dosage had been halved since surgery, and would be reduced to nil over the next three days and replaced with naproxen sodium as needed. There was a wide screen radio / tv built into the wall for his distraction, should he decide to use it. He didn't have a window though, Lucind's room did, however.

"You're only going to prolong your suffering if can't behave yourself, you big fool." she smiled before speaking in a softer tone. "Give yourself a week of rest and this'll all be over. Is there anything you'd like to know, or anything at all I can do for you. Don't hesitate to ask."

As the nurse spoke to him, all he could see was a blurred image which vaguely reminded him of a spider.

It didn't help that the orderlies accompanying her looked nearly the same to him, in his delirious and drugged induced state.

He seemed to want to scream out, but all that escaped his lips was a guttural moan, feeble attempts at pushing away met with resistance.

Placed back into the bed, he stared up at the ceiling once more, his hear rate increasing before he literally gave in.

His pscye was a wreck at this point and her final words fell upon deaf ears... nothing but spiders in his mind...

After a moment of struggling with the hallucinating Vahn the Half-Siren would peek into his room to see what was going on. Her sensitive ears had picked up muffled, yet trouble indicating sounds aside from the protesting machines...

An orderly was seated in Vahn's room, for the patient's own safety. They had orders from a VIP not to restrain him, so it was the only option at the moment.

Outside Lucind's window was the expansive suburbs of the Regulars district. Middle class housing stretched for kilometers, interlaced with shopping centers and comercial intersections. It was a planned urban community, not at all the tight rowhouse construction common in the inner city. Yet the home were still quite inexpensive. Here and there an apartment complex was under construction, showing that there was an influx that might one day make this city a true city. Trees had been hastily planted along the freshly paved asphalt, still unmarred by cracks and pot holes. Every building was fresh, as the city had been barren land only six months before. At night, the streets lights would keep the city lit, now combined with the help of a full moon, as dawn approached they would all suddenly go out together. If she got out of bed and moved to the western edge of the window she would see the glimmering western edge of the Yaits corporate headquaters pentagon, which stretched almost an entire kilometer.

The nurse who spoke with Vahn would catch Lucind outside his room as she left to get fresh gauze to change the bandages around his arm.

"Oh, well look who's moving around. How do you feel, child? You must feel much better." she asked, "You are Lucind right, what a lucky girl, those wounds have healed so fine. I'm amazed at how much progress you've made. The doctors are going to be so pleased when they check you tomorrow up and about."

She gave Lucind a knowing look.

"But what's all this now," Denise said, "Would you like to sit in with your honey a little. He's in a nasty mood, it might be good if you talk to him a little bit."

((Sorry, my fault, but I can edit the post. Since your rooms are next to one another I might have envisioned you being able to peek inside from your bed, but that would be silly as even ICU rooms are enclosed for patient privacy. Sorry, I probably rushed through that last post without giving it enough thought. I'll edit it. All I have to do is change a few words.)) sweatdrop

((I like your way better anyhow, more drama. Please read my edited post, it's the bottom half.)) 3nodding
