BLAST!

I just got the letter back from the agent I queried. She doesn't want it. While I'm a mite disappointed, I have to say, it's farther than I thought I'd actually get with them.

So in this defeat lies a small victory. They wanted partials. It means I'm doing something right.

So on to the next agent!

Hey, random question:

Is it alright to query two different agents at the same time, provided their guidelines don't say that it's to be exclusive to their agency? I don't mean writing one query letter and then sending it to one and CCing another, I mean sending each of them a query letter for the same project. Because this having to wait 4-6 months stuff for a rejection from one agent is a bit annoying. I'd rather send out two or three at a time so I at least know it's being looked at.

No, you still have to wait to hear back from the first, unfortunately. Unless they are a "no response means no" agent--in that case if it were me I'd wait about 4 weeks and then assume no to keep things going.

But no sending to agents at the same agency simultaneously, even if they let you submit to another agent there after one passes. Are you running out of agents to query?

Sorry to hear about the no on the partial.

Wait wait wait! No, not to two agents at the same agency. That much I know not to do. I mean to two different agents at two different agencies.

And I am by no means running out of agents. Thank you AgentQuery and QueryTracker!

And I'm not worried about it. I'll find an agent eventually. ^_^

Oooh, okay! Misread that.

Then yes, fire away and query a bunch at once. Honestly, the ones who expect queries to be exclusive are asking a lot, and it's only good for them (no competition) and not for writers.

Synopsis

I hate it. I hate that they all want a synopsis. For no other reason than that I'm not the best at writing them. I'm verbose--cutting 500 pages down into a 2 page synopsis is like telling me I need to drain a pool through a drinking straw.

GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

*deep breath*

Okay, I feel a little better now.

Off to write this synopsis...

sad That sucks for the agent declining it. As for synopsis, one of my favourite authors, J.R.Ward brought out a book with extra features for her series. She included her synopsis that she sent to her agent for the first book and no kidding, it was like ten pages long! And she got accepted! It was like a narrative...hahaha.

How long was the first book in that series?
PostPosted: Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:55 pm

It was just over 100,000 words, 300-400 pages of a standard book.

Genis Sage
Ha ha! You-- Got-- Re--jec--ted!"

This last one was like, a SUPER no. I found her on Query Tracker, and people like to post their submission/rejection dates/letters. Compared to the ones that were posted, this was just a painfully blatant NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. I think I might have offended her.

And I find that very depressing.

It's not that I didn't follow her directions or sent it when she doesn't represent the genre. I really do think it's my opening. I'm not the best with beginnings, and admittedly it's a little cliche. My thing is, I KNOW IT'S GOOD! I've had plenty of people read it, friends and non-friends alike, and they all say the more they read, the more they get into it. So it's just this beginning. Ugh... But I'm not quite sure how to go about changing it. What I have works and works well. I think I'll wait to hit 20 rejections before I really start thinking about revamping.

And so another rejection gets added to the Rejections Folder.

On to query number 6!

A really famous author stuck all of his rejection letters on a big pin on the wall, so don't worry smile It does really suck having something sitting there which you know is great but people won't listen. Just hang in there and be confident!

Wow... That's gotta be a record.

Literally 23 minutes between query and rejection. XD

And thanks for the encouragement, Desert! I might just have to start printing all these e-rejections out.

Wow. How could they have seriously contemplated it in that time? Really, all those rejection letters would be plastered on my walls. I would laugh in their faces. J.K.Rowling was exactly like that, declined by most major companies. I bet they kick themselves every night!

Here are a few rejections I found amusing from famous authors:

Quote:
H.G. Wells had to endure the indignity of a rejection when he submitted his manuscript, "The War of the Worlds" that said, "An endless nightmare. I do not believe it would "take"...I think the verdict would be 'Oh don't read that horrid book'."

Quote:
Carrie by Stephen King
'We are not interested in science fiction which deals with negative utopias. They do not sell.'

He was the author who nailed it to his wall!

Quote:
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s (later Sorceror’s) Stone was rejected by a dozen publishers, including biggies like Penguin and HarperCollins. Bloomsbury, a small London publisher, only took it on at the behest of the CEO’s eight-year old daughter, who begged her father to print the book. God bless you, sweetheart.

Also George Orwell's Animal Farm was told animal books don't sell in the USA. Hahaha.

So, it happens to everyone!
