Hotaru Kudo I have a question for y'all. Do braces mess with your playing at all? Does it make playing certain instruments hard to play? I'm kinda worried 'cause I play the oboe, and I'm getting braces soon. sweatdrop it'll probably be painful...but not an extreamly big deal, 'cause you play a reed..if you play brass then you ar ejust screwed..it really hurts!!!

Like people have said, it depends on the instrument. I play the trumpet and when I first got braces, it was not fun. When it comes to getting used to your braces, try a little each day and you'll eventually start makin' noises which will turn into notes, etc. etc. etc. Braces also help fix your bad habits. Before braces, I would constantly press my lips against the mouthpiece and my tone stank. Now, because I don't press, my volume has increased 900% and my tone is great.

I play the flute and the french horn. I have braces and I used put this wax stuff the orthodontists gives me on the brackets when I asked them for it. It helped a lot! I stopped doing that though as it was a pain in my butt. After a while of playing I got calises on the inside of my lips. Now the worst injury thats happened since is me hitting myself in the face with a soccer ball. -.- But thats completly not related to band lol! Just related to me not paying attention when I'm volleying. sweatdrop

I play trumpet and got braces, and now I always sound airy. I have friends who play woodwind who have gotten braces, and they say it doesn't affect them at all.

its really not that big of a deal. when you first get them put on it does hurt and it is different, you have to rework your embouchure to make room to the extra metal. but you get used to it and its just a non-issue.

When I first got my braces (i play clarinet btw) i sucked for like a couple of days but as I got use to my braces it got easier and easier to play so youll have to give it some time but youll still b able to play and try gettin some wax for braces because it helps with the pain of ur lips rubbin against ur braces

I played trumpet until I got braces, which forced me to switch to low brass, which turned out to be a good thing in the end, because trombone is clearly superior to trumpet.

When I started playing the flute, I didn't have braces but when I got them, it was harder to play at first. But then I got used to it.

you only have to wry if you play a brass instrument!
it's MURDER burning_eyes
BUT if you tell your ortho that you play a brass instrument, he/she might have these things you clip on to your braces to protect your lips, and you'll do just fine!
that's what i did

You'll get used to it, though. 3nodding Sometimes when I play it hurts because my braces cut into my bottom lip. Also, it will mess with your embachure (I can't spell) when you try to play. Look at it this way... by the time you get your braces off, you'll have lips of steel. biggrin

Raine_Storms I'm actually in the same boat as you. I'm getting my braces on next wednesday, and I'm totally freaking out. I play the tenor sax, and I'm worried that it'll hurt when I roll my lips over my bottom teeth. Can anyone tell us if it really hurts that much or not? Yeah, I play Alto Sax and it does hurt a little to do that. Nothing excruciating, but it's still annoying.

I am kinda in the same situation as you... I get my braces, spacers, and palette expander on in two weeks and I play the flute. Some people say it is terrible and some say it is not that bad... but I have a concert like 2 weeks after that and my BD was like freaking out when I told him... because I am one of about three people in my section who can actually PLAY... I'm just worried that my playing will be messed up, I could probably get over the pain...

It might bother you at first, but once you get used to them, it's all down hill.
