Kendra looked back at the girl Lauss had gestured to. "Oh, nae, w're related. She's me cousin." She looked back at the young man, then to Kelly. "I guess I ne'er thought o' it much before, but you do kinda look like Keagan's halfbreed."
Kelly didn't say anything for a long moment, then got up. "I need t' gae talk t' me mum." He trotted off without another word.

Lauss' gaze followed the boy, his point completely moot now that Kendra had said they were related. Why was the boy so upset, anyway? He said himself they weren't related. Who would know better than him? Either way, they couldn't play their game now. "Should we put this away?" He frowned, having looked forward to playing. Then again, he'd already learned the rules with the little guide that was included.

"Nae, there will be others wantin' t' play," Kendra said, a bit sad that her crush had left so suddenly. She looked up at Lauss. "You really think he looks like Faolan tha' much?"

Lauss nodded. "He looks almost exactly like him. At least to me." Did he have distorted vision or something? "Do you think perhaps his mother had intercourse with Faolan and simply hasn't told anyone?" He clearly didn't know this wasn't the way to talk to children.

Kendra blinked. Lucky for Lauss, didikai children learned early on about sex so she wasn't so much shocked about his casual discussion of it than the implication he'd just made. "I can kinda see why she wouldnae say anything, bein' married an' all. Kelly's always called him da. His mum's husband, I mean. W' all assumed he was Kelly's da. This ain't gonna set well." She got up and tugged at Lauss' sleeve. "Come on. W' should talk t' Da about this."

"Hm? Why?" What did this matter? These children turned out to be so confusing. "It's alright, Faolan has good genes, it would seem. Either way, Mister Kelly told us he wasn't his father. It's okay." He smiled at Kendra, though let her tug him along.

Kendra just shook her head, dragging Lauss to her father. "Da, Lauss tol' Kelly about Uncle Faolan."
"Tol' him what exactly," Anson asked, arching a brow.
"About how much they look alike an' how Fao might be his da," the girl answered.
Anson stood up, scanning the playground for the boy. "Shite. Where is he, Kendra?"
"He said he had t' gae talk t' his mum," the girl replied.
"Do me a favor, little one. Take Lauss back t' your brother's, alreet? I'm gonna gae see about talkin' wi' Kelly an' his mum," Anson told her. "An' stop by Fao's an' tell him t' get o'er there, too."

Lauss looked from person to person, wanting to be a part of whatever was going down. "Mister McCormick, were my suspicions correct, then?" His mouth formed a little "o" shape, the essentic blinking, not wanting to leave and never find out if his hypothesis was true or false.

"I honestly donnae know, lad. W've always suspected, but wi'out her admittin' it, there's just nae way t' know. I guess w'll all know soon enough." The man looked him over and sighed. "You come wi' me, Lauss. Kendra, get yourself o'er t' th' halfbreed's an' tell him t' meet us there."
Kendra nodded and darted off. Anson nudge Lauss to start walking. "You might as well come along t' talk wi' th' boy while th' adults talk."

"I don't believe Mister Kelly particularly enjoys my company, but I'll try to keep him occupied." He wouldn't try to lie to the boy, though. Lauss hated false information, falsities disguised as facts; just about the only thing the essentic truly hated. Still, he was excited to be tagging along, excited to learn what would come of all this. He hopped along Anson's side, not having the correct attitude toward the current situation at all.

Anson put a hand on Lauss' shoulder. "E'en if you're excited about this, an' I can tell you are, please donnae act it. This family's likely t' be hurt from all this." He looked over to see Fao tearing a** across the camps to where Kelly's mother lived. "An' I got a feelin' it might get worse before it gets better."

So then, this was a bad thing? Lauss frowned, his excitement dwindling a bit. What was wrong? Faolan was a good man, why wouldn't the family want him to be the boy's father? He, too, watched Faolan hustle, taking note that he was no longer sleepy any more. Even he was excited, it seemed.

Anson looked down at Lauss, seeming to get from the boy's expression that he was confused. "Lauss, Kelly's mother used t' date Faolan. They were pretty close. She wanted t' get married an' he didnae want t', so they split an' two days later she married one o' Fao's rivals out o' spite. Then she had Kelly nine months later. W' all suspected, but she swore he wasn't Fao's son." He wondred if the boy was understanding any of this now.

Lauss nodded, understanding well enough. "But why is this a bad thing? What does it matter who Mister Kelly's father is?"

"Because Kelly has always thought his father was the man who raised him. He's never had even the slightest idea Faolan might be his father. On top of that, Faolan and Kelly's da still donnae get along," Anson explained as they walked along.
