Which is why the best thing to do in a zombie apocalypse it to be prepared waaay before it starts. Buy up a huge amount of land somewhere, fortify the grounds as best as you possibly can, start purchasing and storing large amounts of nonperishable food items, water, and weaponry. Enough for at least 5-10 years. Then either live there, and live/work as close to it as you can so you can get there as soon as possible.

But all of that would take a large sum of money, a lot of work, and people to help you.

Assuming you have some form of power to run said turrets. Also seems unlikely you'd get them to aim specifically for the head without a whole computer set up linked to them that would actively search for the head. The most you'd be able to do without all kinds of fancy gear is just have them shoot at whatever moves and that couldwill be a big ammo waster.

I'd stick with human shooters. Much more reliable, especially when you don't know what you might or might now have for power. It'd be best to conserve any power source in case you need it for something more important.

It's more of an anime fantasy than a survivalist reality.
As I've been suggesting in other elements of this discussion, look at real-world analogs if you want to make a guess at how a zombie survivalist group will look.
You need a group of people operating without external support (or at least minimal support). You also need a group that believes they must protect themselves using violent methods. There are two groups I can think of:
* Terrorist training camps: they are spectacularly low-tech, and run more like traditional military bases. They don't have any "tech/mech genius".
* Militia or apocalypse groups: A good (but old example) of this is the Waco, TX Branch Davidians. There are others, as well, though. You also don't see any "tech/mech genius".
It wouldn't matter much, though. Even if you had someone with the skills to design these sorts of things, he's likely a theorist with limited fabrication skills. Even if he's BOTH a theorist AND a fabricator (which is very, very, VERY rare), finding the materials and tools he would need to build things is unlikely.
Then you have other logistics problems...how much power do you have? Where are you getting it from? You can't exactly run full power day and night unless you have an oil field AND a refinery AND people who know how to manage both. Solar power? Maybe, but solar doesn't produce as much power as other methods, so you better have a TON of panels.
Speaking of skills, snipers aren't easy to come by. It's a specialized skill, and not one that everyone can learn.
The permanent base being mentioned isn't likely. It presumes the availability of a lot of resources, a lot of skills, and a lot of manpower. The chances of having all of those available in a post-apocalyptic scenario are slim.

actually photo-voltaic cell have recently become alot more energy efficient or go for wind power, leeach energy off a nearby windmill.
but you do make a good point, it's more fantasy to believe we'd have such objects

*sniff* so proud of this thread. *virtual hug*

I have no problem with finding land to cultivate, so my specialty would probably be around agriculture and livestock. Protecting such resources are a little out of my reach, though. My guns have to be realigned because they're off target too much.
PostPosted: Thu Jul 16, 2009 1:16 pm

Yeah. How about this scenario...

Let's say the apocalypse goes down, and somehow, coincidentally, we all end up in the same place, trying to eke out an existence in an imaginary place that we're all trying to live in together called "The Ranch."
Realistically speaking, what skills would you be able to offer to group to help everyone survive together? What would you do to make our chances of surviving better?

For me:
In a world without power, manual labor would be used for a lot of things. I'm both physically fit and physically powerful, so I'd probably be spending a lot of time building and reinforcing fences and other obstructions on the edges of the Ranch.
My job before the apocalypse was as a computer engineer, so that doesn't translate well, but I've always been very good at tinkering with things and figuring out how both electronic and mechanical devices work. That makes me a good repairman for any basic survival devices we have (such as a grain mill, etc).
Long ago I was in the military and was cross-trained in a military police capacity, so I know how to use a variety of weapons. I was certified on the 12 gauge shotgun, and as a marksman with the 9mm pistol. I was trained but not certified on a number of other things. I'm probably still a capable general security person, although it's no longer my specialty.
And, lastly, I tend to keep my head well in times of crisis.

Hopefully one or more of you know something about growing and cultivating food, because I have NO skill in that area.

Well I guess we're in luck.

Before operation: s**t Hitting Fan, I was a cashier in order to fund my hobbies of growing various plants and taking care of animals. I know a lot about what can be used as fertilizers and general plant care, from planting the seed, all the way up to the end of the plant's lifecycle and harvesting seeds from it. I can't run for s**t, but I'm a great worker and physical labor is not a problem for me. I'm also great at improvising. Not having much to work with, I always have to make things out of something else because I can't afford whatever specific thing I need. Not as great as macgyver, but then again, who is? I can build things without a blue print, so I guess that helps in a technical aspect. I work best under pressure, and I'm the one calming people when everything comes crashing down.

I'm great at manual labor, you'll never hear me complain about how hard something is, and I'm rather fond of animals. I'm not good at slaughtering but I can tell which parts are what for the most part and have no problem cooking.

I can cook for the most part, and make due with what I have. I imagine I'll be working in the kitchen a lot, baking bread and making meals for everyone. I can clean clothes manually as well. On "The Ranch" I'm sure I could do tons of tasks and come up with easy and viable solutions to everyday problems.

and I can change the fluids in vehicles and their tires. Don't ask me to siphon gas, though. I'd probably puke.

A little late in the game but here goes:

Shotgun (any kind)
Machete
Pistol (any kind that can blow off a head)
Keep isolated and on the move, preferably somewhere in the country.
Kill anyone that has been bitten and/or infected
Destroy the head in any way possible
Run
And in the case of the slow moving zombies, step to the side or walk around them.
Fortified vehicle with good gas mileage
First aid supplies
Food supplies
Water
You are the only one you can trust in this type of situation because it brings out the worst in human nature. So my best bet is to stay on my own that way I don't end up as somebody meal ticket.....who isn't a zombie....if you get my drift.

As for my skills:

I have the ability to successfully grow and harvest plant.
I have good medical knowledge. I'm no doctor, but my mother and uncle both work in a hospital, so I get a lot of information from them.
I run quite well, considering my short little legs. My physical appearance is very deceiving. I am quite strong after working at a grocery store for about five years. Unloading truck, carrying cases of milk (6 gallons) around. Lugging around 50 pound bags of rice. Running from one end of the store to another every five minutes. If that doesn't get you some muscle, nothing will.
I have a very strong will to survive and I keep my calm exceptionally well in a crisis situation, which tends to calm those around me.
I also am quite handy. My father is not a tools man, so my mother and I are left to do the fixing up at my house.
I'm excellent at geography and keeping my bearings. Maps are my thing.

And that is what I have to offer if I do end up at a place like "The Ranch". I tend to keep to myself for the most part, though, but can be quite sociable.

I like the list we've come up with so far. Truly, everyone here has awesome ideas and we've still got a few days left. The first post has seriously gotten us somewhere and I like reading it when I sign on. :3

Do you think there will be fast zombies or slow ones?
PostPosted: Mon Jul 20, 2009 7:40 am

I think they'll start out as fast zombies, then as they slowly deteriorate they'll become slow zombies.

I'm a fan of the "mutated rabies virus" idea. It'd basically be something like the rage virus in that they're not really zombies, but are pretty close to the current mainstream depiction of them. In truth, do animals with rabies not act similar to zombies? They're in extreme pain and are very thirsty, so they lash out and try to attack anyone and everything before dying. And of course this lashing out passes the virus on. All it takes is for an experiment to go wrong and somehow make it out of the lab and then poof. So yeah, my guess would be fast.

I live near a highschool, so in case of zombies, I'll have a place to hide that's secure and hige, so I won't have trouble with that. There's alot of room in my basment so I could store a ******** of food and water down there, make in living-dead proof. And I also have pets, so if I run out of food, the zombies are still here, and I'm starving, with the options of leave for food and possibly die, or eat my pets, I can choose #2. And I have two questions for everone:: Can zombies of any kind climb up stairs, and are any of you worried their could be a zombie outbreak on the 22nd, the day of the eclipse? :O

1. Rage virus zombies, and in my opinion, those are the most likely kind. Also the Trioxin zombies, Evil Dead ones since those are demons. Voodoo/magic zombies. Pretty much all types except our good ole Romero zombies that everyone knows and loves.

2. No, but that would make a neat story and I've been working for a good article about the eclipse to post in the guild because some people are going all apocalyptic and freaking out about it =P

DW does an excellent job with that thread. <3

I want to believe in Invader Zim Mall Zombies: stupid, slow, and clumsy.

I don't want to think about the Rage Virus too much. Those are the ones to which I have no defense.
