It seemed like tonight was the night to be up and about in the early hours of the morning. There were now three of the mansion's residents in the kitchen, and they were talking amongst themselves. The first female had gotten hot chocolate, the second a glass of milk, and the one male of the group had gotten a cup of green tea. From the looks of things the only reason they were downstairs was to try to get back to sleep.

X-23 sighed softly to herself. She wasn't likely to learn much from these three. As she watched them, she set about trying to remember who was who from her database raid. The only one she recognized was Maxis and even then his file had been small. It had only held his name, picture, and where he was from. She had no idea as to what his powers might be, but she suspected they might be related to his reptilian looks. The two girls hadn't been in the computer at all. She would have remembered someone with wings other than Warren Worthington, also called Angel. From this X-23 concluded that these two must be rather recent additions to the school. Her conclusion proved correct when she heard the one with wings say she'd just arrived that afternoon. 23 hoped that none of these would give her much trouble when she made her move. They were recent additions, and, in her sight at least, innocent bystanders to her vendetta against Weapon X.

Turning with a warm cup, Kira held it in her hands, more for the comfort of having something warm in her hands then anything else. Unconsiously her eyes shifted towards the door way, for some reason she just couldn't shake the feeling that someone else was around, but she quickly credited it to being in a new house with so many new people, and her empathy being really sensitive after her nightmare.

Shaking her head Kira finally paid attention to the others in the room. "Umm, same here going to bed so early after getting here probably wasn't the best idea." She lied easily and with a smile. "Oh, my name is Kira by the way. I don't think we met yesterday..." Kira said to Sarah.

She smiled and bowed her head to Kira. "It's nice to meet you Kira, my name's Sarah." Sarah said then lifted her cup and took a sip of her drink then noticed Kira's eyes shifting to and from the door in an uneasy manner. She watched curiously for a moment before asking, "Is there something wrong? You look a little uneasy." Sarah was pretty decent at reading peoples emotions.

Kira looked at the girl a suspiously before eliminating the idea that she might me telepathic or empathic, and then managed a weak grin. "I kind of ran away to get here, the anti-mutant protesters were making thinks miserable for my parents, so I eliminated the hassle."

Kira's grin grew into a smile as she shrugged. "I'm thinking I should have stolen a car and driven from colorado instead of hitch hiking. A few weeks of sneaking away from those ralliers makes you paranoid, you know?"

A small giggle escaped her as she nodded. "That's understandable about being paranoid after something like that. I would be too if it had happened to me." Sarah finished her milk and cleaned out the glass. Leaning slightly on the counter she grinned at Kira's comment about driving out to colorado with a stolen vehicle. "What was it like hitch hiking?" She asked curiously.

Kira easily warmed up to the girl, and managed a slight smile with as she giggled. She managed to take another sip coco before thinking about Sarah's question. "Well, you certainly have to be careful about it, but it seems that truck drivers are almost always your best bet if you're younger. They have this law about not being able to pick up passengers but a few of them were able to throw me in the back and get me to the appalacians."

Kira took another drink before finishing, "The protestors are a lot worse in the north east, cuz of the publicity Magneto's managed to send out in this part of the States. I had to walk most of the way here and keep to the woods. I'd hate to have been recognized by one of those creeps." She finished with a shudder and shifted the conversation.

"So what about you, what made you think this was the place to come?" Kira asked curiously.

She thought about this for a moment before saying, "It was probably because my grandparents weren't to accepting of the fact of what I am. My parents had been but they passed away and I had to live with my mothers parents." Sarah shrugged. "I found out about this place online and it seemed like it would be one of the few places I'd be accepted." She managed a small smile. "That's why I came, I didn't tell my grandparents, not that they would have really cared. I bet they're part of those protesters now that I'm out of the house."

Kira cringed at Sarah's frank analysis of her grandparents about about her parents' death. "Sorry." She said as nicely as she could. "My parents were ok with it, well my Dad was, my Mom was a little uneasy, but I guess my mutation isn't as obvious as other peoples..." Kira said before falling off and looking around herself. Personally, she didn't mind what anyone else looked like, but she didn't know how they felt about it. She gulped down the rest of her now cold hot chocolate and looked up again at Angel.

"I didn't mean it like it sounded, believe me, I've spent way to much time being chased by those idiot protestors to be a hypocrite like them." Kira added hurriedly, hoping to make up for her rude comment.

Sarah couldn't help but giggle at Kira. "It's ok, you didn't say anything to offend me. It takes a lot to actually get me upset so what you said is no big deal, really." She pulled herself up and sat atop the counter, her feet dangling. "Your parents may have gotten along with mine. Even your mum despite her uneasy-ness." She said with a smile trying to lighten the mood a little bit.

Maxis had been silently sipping his tea and listening to the conversation, when he got the urge to join in. "I guess I was one of the lucky ones, then. My folks were pretty okay with it. They helped me hide all of this-," Maxis said, alluding to the scales covering most of his body,"- but it was more for my own safety than out of shame or anything. They're actually the ones who got in touch with Xavier, so I could stay here with other people like me," he explained. As he thought about it, Maxis realized that he really WAS one of the luckier ones. Sure, his mutation wasn't exactly subtle, but his family had been accepting and understanding of it. And they'd helped him find a place where he'd be accepted by more than just his family for who and what he was. From what he'd seen on the news, and learned from some of the other people at the Institute, there were many who hadn't been so fortunate.

X-23 was still listening from her perch. The two girls had relayed their names, so now she had those to go with the faces. It seemed that Sarah had used her wings to fly to the Institute, and that the lengthy flight had taxed her enough that she had fallen asleep shortly after her arrival. The other girl, Kira had hitched her way. 23 was oddly interested in that story. She wasn't sure why she cared, maybe it was because she didn't know anything about such things.

The innocent conversation took a sudden turn towards the subject of family and X-23 went rigid. She didn't have a family, she could never have one and it was all his fault. They'd turned her into a weapon because of him. She'd been compared to Weapon X her whole life, he was the reason she'd been punished if she wasn't as good as he'd been. And she hated him for it.

Anger coursed through her veins as they talked of loving, understanding parents and even the not so understanding. At least they had families. As Maxis finished his explanation of how he'd come to Xavier's, she snapped and found that she couldn't take any more. With a not so subtle "RAaahh!!" of frustration, she flung herself off her perch. She wasn't mindful of any noise she might be making, her only thought was to get away from these people and their happiness as she bolted for the gardens. She let her instincts carry her safely away from the mansion, her thoughts brooding and dark as she tried to shut out the one thing she could never have.

"Kira is childish and he hates losing...

Sarah was about to respond when the noise from outside surprised her and quickly she turned towards the window. She could see the dark shape of what appeared to be a person but it was gone to quickly before she could really see it. "What in the heck was that?" She asked looking back at the other two in the room, her eyes full of confusion and surprise.

I'm also childish and hate to lose. That's how I know."

Kira jerked around at the sudden explosion of sound. Her body automatically located it and reached for it. This resulted in her mind also reaching for the location. Fortunately whatever had been hiding was fast, Kira's limited abilities only picked up the faintest hints of frustration and unhappinees before whatever had been there was gone.

It was just enough to make her pale, especially since she had no intention of reaching for anyone, and look towards the gardens. "I-I don't know." She answered Sarah while trying to quell the uneasy feeling in her stomach. Kira really hated going near other people's heads, even for a few seconds.

Maxis, whose senses were keener than most as a result of his mutation, was able to pick up a bit more than the other two, at least using physical senses. "I think... I think someone was spying on us," he said, staring at the spot outside that had, moments before, held a vaguely humanoid shape. "Do you think we should wake anyone up? I mean, whoever or whatever was there is gone now," he asked, looking at the others. He looked at the remains of his tea, and quickly downed the rest of it. So much for a warm, relaxing drink before bed.

The further X-23 got away from the mansion the more she calmed down. However, it took her until she was nearly off the considerable expanse of land that belonged to Xavier for her to regain control of herself. As soon as she did, she could have kicked herself for her stupidity. She'd been well within earshot when she'd left, and now the entire house was probably aware that there had been an intruder. This area wasn't safe, she needed to get off the premises and find a place to lie low for a couple of days. Though, the idea of having to wait even longer because of one careless moment irked her to no end.

'Well,' she thought to herself, 'maybe I'll get lucky and those kids didn't hear me, or if they did, they won't know what the noise was and won't go bothering everyone about it.' X-23 didn't really believe in luck, but if it did exist it avoided her like the plague. She sighed and stealthily made her way off the school grounds and into the woods beyond. She didn't stop until she was a good mile away, and even then, she took refuge in a very leafy tree that concealed her from both the ground and the air.
