For a moment, Dulcie shared in Tihamah's problem of seeing only the Purple eyes of the male before them. They were pretty, shiny like the jewels in the fountain. With that, her mind began to drift and her short attention span shook her out of the dazed feeling she had just experienced. Shaking her head to try and focus, Dulcie took a step forward. "Forgive us sir," she said, giving a short bow. To keep her mind on the situation she focused part of her mind on the actions of a few characters in an old animated movie she'd seen, "My friend and I wanted to take a chance and explore the desert. Unfortunately we discovered, as it got darker, that we would need a place to shelter us from the harsh environment. Your humble garden became a sanctuary." She followed this impressive display with a bright smile and a childish wagging her her tail.

Tihamah was about to open her mouth and give an answer when she heard Dulcie speaking up, and she blinked as the image of the purple eyes seemed to recede. In front of her, the male was turning his gaze upon Dulcie, his eyebrows shooting up in amusement. "My....humble garden?" He threw back his head and laughed once. "My garden is far from humble. It's the only one of its kind, fed by springs tapped deep beneath the sands and host to many exotic plants that I myself bred. But it is indeed a sanctuary, and usually my gardeners are not so careless with the door locks." Returning Dulcie's smile, the male peered almost intently at her. "You're a sweet interesting kid. What is it you wish of me?"

Dulcie became slightly embarrassed that she had misused the word humble. She couldn't help that though, she wasn't the smart one back home. She kept her smile though, trying to think if she really wished anything of the male before them. That was when the idea struck her. Constantly thinking of others, Tihamah's conversation about memories in the desert returned to her mind. She answered the male's question with another question. "Do you know a lot about this desert? If anyone else has ever lived here?" she asked.

As soon as Tihamah had heard the male's odd question to Dulcie, she had formed a sudden idea about their host, and she was dying to communicate it to Dulcie. Though it would have been rude to blurt it out, so she had no choice but to sit and listen to the two converse. At least the male seemed to like them, much to her relief, if what she thought was at all true. The male in question seemed confused by Dulcie's reply, tilting his head a little before cryptically answering. "Few peoples make their home in this desert, but those who do, thrive. Why do you ask? Are you feeling some sort of connection with this barren waste, this skin-searing sandbox?" There was no real malevolence in the male's tone, and Tihamah knew it. She found her ears perking up, and her expression grew slightly hopeful.

Dulcie giggled, "No not me. My parents were from the meadow...and my other family...well I don't even think they know this desert is here." She smiled, proud of her heritage, and glad that the male was being so kind as to help with her queries. "A..." she paused for a moment before continuing, "A friend of mine was wondering...they think that maybe they were a kid in the desert."

Tihamah listened intently as the male thought for a good minute. "I heard a tale once of a group of reclusive ones who legend has it lived in an oasis deep in this desert. As the story goes, the appointed leaders were stern about not admitting outsiders, lest they return to their homelands with tales of the rich lands and beauty therein, and seek to return and claim it for themselves, for they were not a war-like tribe. But when they permitted a wanderer to die of thirst at their very doorstep in accordance with that rule, a percentage of the tribe rebelled and set out on their own, their counterparts who remained behind convinced that they would never survive to reach the edge of the desert. But they say that a few did, and that they crossed the great river and settled on the other side of the island. Perhaps your friend was a child at the time; the story came to my ears quite recently."

Dulcie listened intently to the story. She found it to be quite riveting...even if she didn't know what that word meant. It sounded like something out of a storybook, and that was why she payed so much attention. "Neato," she answered quietly in awe upon the story's finishing.

Listening with a tilted head, Tihamah tried hard to make this story hers, to remember something, anything, that might indicate that she was a part of that colony half that had broken off and sought their own fortunes. But try as she might, she couldn't seem to bring up any such images. Maybe she wasn't old enough to understand back then; she might have even been so new to the world that she remembered little else but the warmth of the air and the stinging light of the sands. Seemingly pleased at having his story rated so by Dulcie, the male beamed and showed a brilliant set of white teeth before looking back and forth between the two females. "Did my story help?"

Dulcie had to think about this. She hadn't asked the question for herself. She had asked for Tihamah. She looked over at her friend in a curious manner, asking with her eyes if it had helped any.

Tihamah caught Dulcie's eye, and unfortunately did nothing to hide her confusion and uncertainty. She really wished she had gathered something more; to her, Dulcie had risked a lot by asking this male about something on her behalf. No matter what he was, the last thing she wanted to do was make him angry. Far from seeming angry, the male seemed to understand as he looked from female to female that his story hadn't been as helpful as either of them had hoped. Ah well.... Smiling cheerfully at them, but moreso at Dulcie, the male cleared his throat. "Well, sometimes it takes time for memories to resurface. Meanwhile, what else do you wish? Something cold to wash the sand from your throats perhaps, since I gather you weren't quite bold enough to try drinking from my fountain." XD

Dulcie gave a half disappointed, half sympathetic look to her friend, a bit upset that the story hadn't helped. She looked back at the male though with her usual child-like grin. "A drink?" she asked, thinking about it. They hadn't drank anything since the river, "Well sure! That'd be very nice of you!" She giggled, thinking of the idea of drinking from the fountain. That thought hadn't even popped into her head when they had found it.

Chuckling as though he knew the reason for Dulcie's giggling, the male shook his head as though ridding himself of a bothersome ear mite, and two fluted glasses filled with what looked like tropical blue slushie. On the sides of each glass were two ribbons of fruit rind, decoratively hanging down like streamers, and the straws protruding from the slushy mixture looked almost as though they were made of some sort of gemstone, but of course that would be silly.
Tihamah's eyes went huge as the drink materialized in front of her; she was almost too afraid to drink it, but she found herself staring curiously at the beverage in front of her, the tiny little drops of condensation magnifying the bits of ice, something within the recesses of her memory began to stir, and she found herself lowering her front down to the ground to stare at it more keemly, as though it were a crystal ball.

Dulcie looked at the Slushy with excitement. It looked so yummy, so sweet! It also looked rather cold, which was fine with her. She took a rather large sip from the straw, twitching as she experienced the terrible brain freeze from the cold drink, then gave a delighted sigh as the pain slowly went away. "Ohmygosh! Tihamah, aren't these yummy?" she squealed looking over at her friend. She was slightly shocked to see such a distant gazing look on the yellow/orange namir's face.

Beaming at Dulcie's enthusiasm, it took the male a minute to notice that her companion wasn't drinking hers, but staring silently at it as though expecting it to sprout legs and do a trick. Recognizing the intensity of the stare, the male turned his head to Dulcie and winked at her. "It seems as though your friend finds something familiar in her drink." Tihamah indeed was remembering as she stared at the tropical blue color. She was remembering a color just like this, only there was more of it, lots more. She remembered sand giving way to plants; not forest, with trees and bushes, but dried shrubbery and clumps of prickly plants that hurt when you stepped on them. She heard a voice saying "Look, the sea...." And there it had been, more water than she had evr seen in her life, the same beautiful blue.... THAT was why she couldn't remember crossing the river; those she had been with had gone the other way, gone north to the sea rather than southwest to the river. She could remember now. Blinking, she beamed at Dulcie unexpectedly and began to drink her slush, happy at least that instead of being salty, the taste was tangy and refreshing.

Dulcie looked between the male and Tihamah, smiling when her friend beamed and began to drink. They had come to the desert on a mission, and Dulcie was pretty sure that that mission had just been accomplished with the happy blue drinks. She looked down at her own and thought of her kithood, of her real family and her other family and she smiled. "What a super day!" she cheered, taking another large drink from the slush.
