Yes the Palestinians did choose poorly, but hindsight is 20/20 darling. Like I said, at the time Hamas probably seemed stronger than the deflating and corrupt Fatah. If Israel or any group of respectable people could help establish this new Fatah party (al-Mustaqbal I believe) we could probably be on a road to peace that was much less bumpy.

It doesn't work like that, though. The people of Palestine will still want Israel gone, and so the more... extreme... parties will have the public support. And democracy doesn't work if no one can vote for who they wish.

You can't be so negative. Nothing would ever be accomplish if we didn't think things could change. I don't want to go all "peace and love" on you, but it's the truth.

Some of them might still want to see the destruction of Israel, true, but I think most Palestinians would be happy with an independent country that they do not view as being oppressed by Israel. You force people to live on small slivers of land, you only give them an allotted amount of food and water, and you make sure that every time they want to cross a border for whatever reason they are hassled and profiled and treated like lower class citizens. You'd fight that s**t too.

This reel really does show how diverse Israel is.

And these lyrics are so appropriate for what is happening right now.

MY COUNTRY
(in Arabic)

My mother Earth
everything that was mine is not mine
even my country turned into my danger
a punching bag for international exits
that will determine for me whether to be or not.
We don't raise our head, we take punches
(with) eyes closed.
Screaming: live and let live
this is not my nation,
wanna-bes and illusions
wanna-bes, I can't be in the mud
but we're here and we'll never go away from here,
the Zionism is in the Jewish blood,
that respects Islam
and also Christianity and Buddhism
and everyone else too
my throat is satisfied,I'm not thirsty for blood,
understand blood spills blood,
and one spills blood
and then in comes his uncle
and his blood is also spilled
waste of time, he doesn't get up, he won't wake up,
father won't put the kids to sleep nomore.

Who am I, what did I know
my roots, where did I come from?
I'm here and I came from here.
this is my land and my country

Mom!
Look at me today,
I left the weapon,
I picked up the mic,
I dream of peace (also greeting)
I get "goodbye"
f* miracles and wonders,
everything's jsut illusions.
Living in a storm, in the centre of danger,
sorrows so great in a country so small,
I wanna live, die,
straight, crooked,
free, captured,
starting, finished,
standing, falling,
soldier, terrorist,
giving, taking,
God, Hell
You're a spilled first born son,
how everything turned opposite,
danger sticks to you, like to a smelting furnace,
again rising and falling, from the fear to the trash,
69 and we switch,
the rebellion is upside down
again the sidewalk is blood-coloured
human heart stopped, blood flows to the sea,
a world of sh*, reality with constipation
living in a movie, dying to live, live in order to die

Who am I, what did I know
my roots, where did I come from?
I'm here and I came from here.
this is my land and my country

Israel seems to be figuring out how the media works in regards to public relations.

http://www.reuters.com/article/middleeastCrisis/idUSLC412736

JERUSALEM, Jan 13 (Reuters) - The advertisements in the international press couldn't be clearer: a map of London with an outline of the Gaza Strip alongside, missiles raining down onto Britain's capital.

"Imagine if Hamas terrorists were targeting you and your family," reads the text under the map, overlayed with concentric rings showing the range of the rockets Hamas militants fire from the Gaza Strip into Israel.

The ads, which ran in the International Herald Tribune on Monday and were sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League, a pro-Israel group, form part of Israel's effort to explain itself and a war in which Gaza medical officials say over 900 Palestinians have been killed, including nearly 400 women and children.

...

That was never truer than in 2006, when it fought a 34-day war in Lebanon against the Hezbollah guerrilla group that had seized two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid.

Hezbollah fired more than 4,000 rockets into Israel during the fighting and the Jewish state emerged with its pride dented and its enemy claiming victory.

A commission that looked into that conflict concluded that one major shortcoming was Israel's "hasbara" -- a Hebrew word that translates as "public diplomacy" or "explanation".

As a result, Israel set up the National Information Directorate to coordinate its domestic and global message.

I just have one message really...

Those pictures are so incredibly perfect that I can't find the words to describe them well enough.

My worry is that the media will continue to turn the world against Israel, and the whole mess with white phosphorus and the reporting of the numbers of women and children killed does not bode well for a good impression/support.

White phosphorous is an old school chemical weapon. It's a lot like napalm. It's an incendiary substance that can get so hot it can burn concrete. It's used primarily in city areas to create smoke or light up an area, or as it was used in Afghanistan... to turn cave dwelling schmedricks into chunky kibble.

However, the people of Gaza are claiming that white phosphorous is being used to burn people out of their homes and it's being used as an anti-personnel weapon in a civilian area. It's a no-no in the international rules of war, it's like putting a minefield outside of a school yard.

Now Arab scientists say that yes the shells were full of white phosphorous, and the people of Gaza said that they were being used on women and children... lets see what the Red Cross has to say.

http://features.csmonitor.com/globalnews/2009/01/14/red-cross-no-evidence-israel-is-using-white-phosphorus-illegally/

The International Committee of the Red Cross says white phosphorus is being used in Gaza. No question.

But they have no evidence that Israel is using it illegally.

“In some of the strikes in Gaza it’s pretty clear that phosphorus was used,” Peter Herby, head of the Red Cross mines-arms unit, told the Associated Press Tuesday. “But it’s not very unusual to use phosphorus to create smoke or illuminate a target. We have no evidence to suggest it’s being used in any other way.”

Monitor staff writer Robert Marquand reported yesterday that human rights groups have witnessed white phosphorus munitions exploding over populated area of Gaza. While using the agent is not banned by international laws when it’s used as a smoke screen. But it is outlawed for use on people – civilians or soldiers.

Also from the pictures of the shells being fired... they're air bursts

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Air bursts spread out the phosphorous, increasing the surface area, cooling it faster and making it burn for a shorter period of time. This produces a lot of smoke which descends to the ground.

Now I won't lie, it's hot, it might not be on fire anymore, but it's still hot. If your directly underneath an air burst, you're ********. But it's not going to burn for 10 minutes, it's going to burn for 10 seconds.

If they were impact shells, Israel would be starting major fires all around the city and there would be thousands of casualties, as throwing water on burning phosphorous doesn't help.

But lets be clear and brutally honest about 2 things right now. First if Israel wanted to, they have the military resources to kill every living organism within the Gaza strip in 12 hours. They're not, they're trying to be as restrained as possible in a war-zone. Also, it would be very nice if Israel didn't have to go to war with it's neighbors, however the neighbors don't like to leave 'well enough' alone.

So let them try to manipulate the media, let the hippies cry and smoke pot in drum circles. Only the stupids really think Israel is doing this out of aggression and not self preservation.

We are at cease fire...

JERUSALEM — Israel declared a unilateral cease-fire in its 22-day offensive that turned Gaza neighborhoods into battlegrounds and dealt a stinging blow to the Islamic militants of Hamas, but the government said its troops will stay in the Palestinian territory for now.

Shortly before top leaders voted for the cease-fire at an emergency security meeting, Hamas threatened to keep fighting until Israeli troops leave Gaza.

"Our goals as they were set at the beginning of the operation were fully realized, and even more than that," Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said after the 12-member Security Cabinet voted to halt the assault.

"Hamas was hit hard, in its military arms and in its government institutions," Olmert said. "If the fire stops entirely, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) will weigh pulling out of Gaza at a time that befits us. If not, the IDF will continue to act to defend our residents."

so what do you think? will Israel get to finally be left alone? or will Palestine screw the pooch and cause Israel to hit them with the fist of an angry god?

I'm wagering that as the last troops leave Gaza, some Hamas nut will take some pot shots at the infantry with his AK47, and then blow himself up. Anyone wanna bet against me?

It's not the small arms fire they're worried about. It's the katusha rocket attacks.

I have a feeling Hamas will never truly stick to a ceasefire plan. Even if the leadership accepts it, there will still be some nutty individual who goes off and launches a rocket or two at Sderot.

Hey!

That alarm was scary, man. 0o

In any case, Hamas officials accepted the ceasefire, and are now trying pretend that they won, and only lost 48 of their fighters. ._.

I had an arguement today with a lad who believes Israel is the aggressor. So me and a German Jewish friend bombarded him with facts. He stormed off, hurling anti-semetic abuse. Meh, we both know who ended up on top in that arguement!
