DEMON PROMPT

Demon's Name: Oak
Demon's Temper: Bitter
Prompt Response:

Once the great forest guardian had it all. He was strong, and regal, and he stood as strong as the oaks in the defence of his forest. He was honoured and trusted. Even awarded for his efforts, despite his modest refusals. That magical potion had been given to him alone to bestow upon others who were worthy, and the gratitude that shone on their faces as they saw their deepest wish come true... They looked up at him, like the trees reaching for the life-giving sun, and he always graced them with his warmest smile.

But even those who are strong and beautiful will age, destined to live through just one cycle of life. The stallion felt his mortality as an inexorable weight above him. Unlike the trees he so dutifully protected, he could only wither with time and would not grow and bloom anew once his end came. There would be no beauty in the turn of his autumn, no quiet solitude in his winter, and no hope of spring. The forest would live on without him, and for all his brave deeds he would be forgotten.

Immortality. To live forever, like the trees he protected. To stand strong and watch over his forest for years upon years, decades, and centuries, his name known across the land. That was what he had wished for.

But the red potion had burned his throat, twisted his body and turned his skin as rough as bark. Panic clutched at his heart even as immobility stole across his limbs. This was not the glorious moment he had anticipated, it was dark and cruel, robbing him of his life even as it was made eternal. His wish had been granted, tainted by his fears and corrupted by his deeper desires. As a guardian he had judged the pure of heart before granting their wish, but he had not been able to judge his own heart.

Thus he stood for ages, a silent sentinel watching over his forest with his bitter heart and a hateful agony, avoided by all as the Forest Demon where he used to be admired as a great guardian. He festered and rotted, unable to see how his wish had gone awry. Why had it cursed him and him alone, when it had worked miracles for those around him? Had he not been a great and benevolent forest guardian? Did he not deserve to live and serve the forest forever?

After an eternity of silent, vengeful captivity, he was given a second chance. The forest guardian felt an old twinge as he offered the stallion a wish, but he had spent too much time in the darkest recesses of hate to remember the warmth and gratitude of his previous life. Why should this stallion have his heart's desires granted, why shouldn't he be cursed as well? With a smile that masked his cruel and vengeful motives, the forest guardian played the grateful spirit and named his price.

He had all the time in the world to plan his revenge on life while he watched the seasons change without him, but this was not an opportunity he had anticipated, and long after the stallion left he still grinned maliciously for the child that would be his. He could remain a blight within the forest himself, his warped, gnarled appearance could be hidden in the shadows and thickets while a sweeter soul went out into the world to spread his corruption and rot. He would use the child to draw in every last cruel, greedy, miserable soul he had once defended against, lure the world's hateful pollution to these woods and destroy it from within.

The forest that he once loved had betrayed him, he would have dedicated his life to keeping it safe and yet he had only been punished. He would see it wallow in the filth he had kept at bay and feel the weight of mortality as he killed it from within. Before his own life finally failed him, he would bring it all to ruin.

BASKET PROMPT

Basket's Name: Tanoak
Basket's Temper: Friendly
Gender for Prompt: Female (although male would work just as well. <3)
Prompt Response:

The little foal had grown used to independence. One had to be when they lived such a contradiction day in and day out. She was her mother's little jewel, yet now and again she would catch that doubt in her mother's eyes. It was often completely hidden, since her mother loved her dearly, but she knew it was there. Her father loved her as well, told he to avoid the forest so she would be safe. But his hidden emotion was... guilt? They both loved her, but at the same time she was the source of troubled emotions.

She did not take offence to the hidden emotions she saw in their eyes, she loved her parents. Her father treated her as though every day was their last, and her mother was affectionate and tickled her branches to make her laugh when she felt out of place. And she did feel out of place a lot, especially when playing with other foals, so she didn't play with them so much. They looked at her funny sometimes, and rattled her branches. It was easier to go play on her own, finding comfort in her explorations.

She loved nature. The way the wind whistled through the grasses in the grazing land, and the way it rustled the branches of the little shrubs. She often sat next to them, nothing more than an odd little blue shrub herself, and giggled at the resemblance. She had been so tempted to go into the forest, and look at the large trees, and as she grew it got harder and harder to live within her father's imposed boundaries.

Finally she wandered into the woods, and got lost. Belatedly she saw the wisdom in her father's cautions, but she wasn't afraid. Not even when the unfamiliar creaking started, it only reminded her of those big old trees creaking in the wind. And when she realized the tree that followed her was hardly a tree at all, she could only stare in awe. This stallion was like her, covered in branches and leaves that rustled and creaked as he walked. She looked up at that crooked smile, and could only smile back.

What if he had been shunned for his branches too? Did he live in the forest because he preferred the solitude as well? Had she found a friend? Her little mind swirled with possibilities, with the thought of finally meeting a kindred spirit foremost among them. The hidden emotions in his expression were put aside, just as they were with her parents, and she could only smile her happy smile in the face of such a terrible creature since he looked so much like she did.

DEMON PROMPT

Demon's Name: Sucellus
Demon's Temper: Vigilant
Prompt Response:

Swiftly shoving down the emotions that threatened to overwhelm him Sucellus faded back into the woods. Concern, longing and envy were almost foreign to him now, after centuries of being trapped as a tree, the roots of his anger and hatred twisting farther into the ground with each passing day and permeating the forest until the day the fool freed him, and offered him the opportunity to save the very forest that he had once protected and now was a living part of. New life, that was what the forest needed and with the birth of the foal that's what he now knew would one day come to himself and his forest.

When he had first been unleashed he had struck out at any shadowed hart passing through his forest, which had become an extension of his very self. He blamed the two legged tribes in part for the slow decay of the forest he had once inadvertently destroyed with a wish granted to a beautiful trickster, and then recreated from the very seedpods that dropped from his cursed form. The retribution on anyone who had dared harm flora or fauna in these living woods since had been merciless and brutal, and now he was nearly free of curious visitors, that left him alone to contemplate his new powerful form and the curse that came with it. Loneliness. Since being freed he could only hear the voice of the forest as a distant whisper. With the birth of his child from the mare, and the supervision of her beforehand he'd been finding ancient emotions exposed and raw in himself. He was confused and disgusted but despite once being uncaring of their fates he now knew that the small family of soquili who had been entangled into his fate would always be protected in his forest, a not so welcome, but accepted addition to his own family.

For now though, he would await, and watch his child grow, call to her with his forest, teach her in subtle ways everything she would one day need to know to become another guardian of this forest, and until that day he would protect not only the forest but that family, with all the wrath of his vengeance behind every blow he struck at evil hearts - because despite his long seething hatred for anyone who might do his forest harm he could no more bring himself to strike down an innocent then he could be once again be responsible for the death of these ancient woods. Perhaps that was why the mare had awoken the forgotten feelings within him, of valor, loneliness and most importantly reminded him that there was a difference between protecting himself and the extension of himself that was this forest and blind vengeance against any unwitting soul who happened to pass through it. His time to strike back at the one who had punished him would one day come and until then - he could wait.

OK I LIED it didn't take me 24 hours >o>

It was a very close contest though. A lot of good and creative entries, and people really got into character with ther RPing. Most of my sorting through the entries took place over the course of the week, with my biggest challenge being tie-breaking between two potential winners of the demon. I would have posted this even sooner had it not been for that XD But, as they say, there can only be one.

SO
