Kel finished up his work for the day fairly early. With little more than a shrug to attest to his surprise, he walked out of the forge and back into the house. He noticed it was fairly quiet and thought to himself. Seth is still out huh? Maybe I'll go out for a stroll too. He approached the front door, collecting his coat and stepping out of the front door.

Kel flew in low Placing Seth and Maryl on the ground next to the porch stairs. He pulled his coat over his head and ran up the steps to the front door, quickly unlocking it and pushing it open. He stepped inside and hung up his coat before moving off toward the kitchen.
Seth mumbled to herself about the rain before taking Maryl by the shoulders and walking with her up the steps and into the house. She tipped the door shut with her foot and tossed her tunic and chain shirt onto the coat hook before walking up to the couch and sitting down. "Ugh! so many mounting problems... I guess I just need to calm down. The sky needs to rain sometimes too."

Maryl set her cloak and hat on the coat rack as soon as she entered the house. She looked back to notice Pi shaking off the rain and resting on a chair on the porch. After walking over to the couch and sitting by Seth, maryl sighed and looked up at the ceiling. "I think the rain can be rather soothing sometimes."

Seth took a deep breath and sighed. "I guess... It's nice to hear the rain when you aren't outside standing in it. All those tinkerers hate it because they leave their equipment outside and the rainwater rusts and shorts it out. Half their crap doesn't work properly anyway." She gave a dismissing wave at the notion of working gnomish technology.

Maryl turned to Seth intently and smiled. "You're in the Tinkers Union? Wow, what's that like?", she asked inquisitively.

Seth shrugged, "Eh, It's okay. I mean it's fulfilling work, and it's a semi-innovative think tank for inventors and engineers. They do have state of the art equipment for a workshop too. It's a lot easier to get things done there than here at home. It's just that some of those gnomes are pompous imbeciles who can't commit to specifications."

Maryl giggled a bit over Seth's blatant trash talk of the tinkerers. "Well they can't be all bad, can they?"

"Well some of them aren't. It's just that most of the guys who aren't full of themselves are either tech hands, or interns. Most of the innovators are eccentric at best. Sometimes this causes explosions that don't have to do with their shitty creations. Also cause I'm the first to point out the obvious flaws in their creations, namely gaps in tubing and fuel instabilities, and I'm about a 3rd most of their ages, they jump on me for being arrogant or rude. I'm sorry I haven't crafted something that can accidentally light someone on fire or blow them up? The most important rule was supposed to be safety first."

Maryl continued to listen intently to Seth's rant. She was fairly enthralled by the idea of joining a major organization since she herself worked with the Arcanists for a few months. "Well, what did you make in your time with them? And what sort of screwy things have they invented?"

Seth sighed and shook her head. She looked over to Maryl once noticing she looked quite intent in listening. It made her feel a bit better. "Well, I was the first to put together no risk multi barrel guns. Bullet casing based guns are still uncommon on the market but anything that takes advantage of multiple barrels was almost unheard of. Most of the others came up with things that had a risk of explosions or discharges in too many barrels at once." Seth pulled out her dual barreled revolver and held it up letting the house lighting reflect off of it. "This very gun made a mockery of all of that. I can fire from one or both barrels at my choice and without fail." She put away her gun before continuing. "I also crafted explosives that work on timers so as to kill the probability and failure chance of a fuse, I managed to make workable blunderbuss shells, and outside of firearms and explosives I made a portable, stable, and light weight gold energy core as opposed to the standard over-sized and very unstable Phlogston engine core."

Maryl quickly looked toward the passage to the kitchen, wondering what Kel was up to. She returned to Seth and scratched her head. "Are the senior engineers really that bad?"

"Not all of them. The ones that are I swear were replaced by Goblins in costumes or something. The more careful engineers don't show up cause they spend a lot more time in development. Unless they hit a huge breakthrough their stuff tends to be overwrought and underwhelming. They end up having development costs creeping up on them. I'm just glad I don't work in the Goblin engineer's guild. Place got blown up at least three times since its establishment." Seth looked up again. "Actually, I've told you some pretty classified stuff. Just keep all this to yourself."
Kel poked his head out of the hallway into the living room, and announced to Seth and Maryl. "It's dinner time."

Maryl nodded and smiled to Seth, "I won't say a word." She turned and nodded to Kel after hearing his announcement. "Ok!" Looking back toward Seth as she got off the couch she asked, "So why is all of this technological stuff so secretive? Haven't they come up with inventions that would greatly benefit the people?"

Seth slumped off the couch and walked up to Maryl pausing first. "Well part of it is we're unprepared for a potential high demand, we can't mass produce. We can't sell our plans to manufacturers because there aren't any, and even if we could there isn't a lot of security in that. It'd be all too easy to have a manufacturer take the blueprint, the credit, and cut the inventor out of the process." She walked toward the kitchen, entering and stopping at her seat before continuing, "In my case it's probably a matter of utility. Most of my efforts have gone toward means of normal people gaining even ground against elementalists. I've been largely successful but most of what I've come up with is combat oriented and since elementalists control the world, I'd come under some serious trouble if my inventions did get out."

Maryl entered the kitchen and took a seat at the dinner table. "I see..." She fell silent thinking to herself about Seth's problem. It felt sorta ironic that the two of them would struggle against a war but Seth would in turn create devices that could be applied in one. On the other hand, it would give the common folk and the downtrodden a fighting chance.
