Cane dragged me out to the mall to help him buy stuff for our party, and some ritual of his. Do I look like some fancy shopping accessory? I didn't think so. It's not like I'm feminine. Just because I like going to the mall doesn't mean I like shopping. I just like to harass the patrons and visit with the mall girls, that's all. No, seriously!

I shouldn't have to explain myself to my own computer. Damn.

.[how old are you now?].

You know what they say! One year older, one year wiser!

Canaan and I hosted a Solstice Party, which was more like a get-together for my birthday, hurhur. You know, I've never had a birthday party before! It made me pretty happy. RuiZhi came, and so did Mica. And Cane was there, so it was an all-around good day! I think I like Solstice better than Christmas. I understand Solstice more, it makes better sense to me. And, what's more, it's also my birthday. And maybe that Jesus guy saved all the Christians (or something, I'm not big on human religion), but I'm going to save the whole world.

So take that, organized religion!

Path: Soldier~
Class name: Military Tactics

table challenge
Ah, military tactics! The art of war, as one might say. Without proper knowledge of such things, men could be sent blindly into a trap that would equal their demise. And so, for today's class, you have been instructed to learn chess! Your goal is to understand some of the finer points of the game and win as many as possible. The only problem is, upon reaching the designated classroom, where a board has already been set for you, there seems to be neither manual nor opponent for you to face. How do you handle the situation? Will you wing it, trying to teach yourself the game and all it's finer points? Or will you go and find a teacher to assist you? If so, which one and will you win or will you lose?

“…what the <********> is this s**t?”

Was this some sort of joke? Scyeth looked around the room again, just to make sure that weirdo Herei wasn’t hiding somewhere in a corner, waiting to jump out at him with tea and scones. Wait, wasn’t that a British thing? Well, the Adviser was something of a tea junkie, anyways. Scyeth remembered that much of him. He was a cross-dresser too, but that concerned Scyeth less than the tea thing. What was in that tea that he drank so damn much, anyways? It couldn’t be heal-

Focus, Scyeth.

Maybe there was a note. Maybe that damn psycho ran out of his goddamn tea and he wandered off to get more. That would make sense. Leave some instructions, let Scyeth do it himself. He was a genius, after all. Chess should not pose much of a problem.

Or the professor could just leave him stranded. That was cool too. Scyeth hissed another long string of curses and brushed his hand through his hair. (It was getting long. He needed a haircut.) Maybe RuiZhi knew how to play chess. He was smart. He knew lots of smart things. His boyfriend was probably busy studying (as per usual, Scyeth thought fondly), but he’d always make time to help the blond out with a problem.

On second thought, he’d probably never learn chess if he asked his favorite Asian for help.

Sniggering to himself, Scyeth seated himself at the chess table and began to poke at the set. It was a very nice set, that much was clear. It probably cost a lot; perhaps it was Herei’s own personal set?

“But why would he-”

“Why would he what, Mr. Akazar?” Herei’s smile brightened a few watts when Scyeth nearly jumped out of the chair. “Fancy some tea?”

“I don’t want any of your goddamn hippie tea,” Scyeth muttered, clearly embarrassed he’d been caught off guard. “I’m hear to play chess. You know. For class.” One hand on his hip, the demon attempted to glare Herei’s smile off his face.

The Adviser was clearly unimpressed. “My apologies, Mr. Akazar, but it has been my experience that you rarely attend your classes, so I had simply run out for some tea.” The man was already by his hotplate, pulling some mugs down and adding tea bags. “It’s a special brand, you see. Absolutely delight-”

“I don’t really care about your weird tea fetish,” Scyeth snapped, irked by the jab the professor had made at him. It was completely true, the Australian just didn’t like to think it gave others grounds to treat him differently. (Which it completely did, and this, Scyeth thought angrily, was going to cause a very large problem.) “I just want to have a chess lesson so I can get the hell out of here.”

“You have somewhere to be?” Herei inquired, making his way over with two mugs. After setting one down in front of the impatient student, he settled himself across the board from the soldier-in-training. “Have a seat, Mr. Akazar.” His smile widened a little as Scyeth scowled.

“I said I didn’t want anymore tea,” the teenager replied sulkily, flopping down. “And I know how to play. Sorta. I know how the pieces move. And I know how to win.”

“Excellent.” Herei took a sip of his tea and sighed happily. “Would you like to play the first move, Mr. Akazar?”

“Your loss.”

Scyeth really hadn’t expect to lose. What’s more, he didn’t expect to lose in less than ten turns.

“What the…how did you…what?” He frowned, staring at the black piece Herei had just knocked over. “We..it’s been like, ten minutes! You frickin’…you cheated, didn’t you?” Scyeth glowered.

The Chinese man chuckled softly and took a long sip of tea. “Hardly, though I have been told every successful man cheats if he can get away with it. However, I simply used a tactic, stuck to the plan and defeated your random moves. Really, Mr. Akazar, you didn’t even have the beginnings of a plan.”

“I did too!”

“You abandoned it three moves into the game, before you could really tell what I was up to. How do you know I wasn’t bluffing? Hmm?”

Scyeth frowned. “I just swapped to avoid losing too many pieces.”

“Sacrifices have to be made. When you have a well-thought out plan, it is important you stick to it. More importantly, though, is that you plan carefully enough to make sure you can be confident in your plan. Of course, do not second-guess once you’ve made your choice; at that point, it is usually the best option to drive ahead. Then there are always the scenarios you must roll with the-”

“Do you even realize how times you just like, contradicted yourself?”

“C’est la vie, Mr. Akazar.”

“…what? That’s ******** French, you crazy Asian.” Scyeth gave the professor a wary look. “So I’m supposed to be well-thought, confident and flexible.”

“Exactly! You certainly pick up quickly.” Herei flashed Scyeth a quirky smile. “You cannot stand by your plans and never vary, because inevitably, sometimes you will be wrong, sometimes the enemy will read you, what have you. Not all plans work. You must be able to adapt. But that said, you must be able to stick with a plan even if it’s getting a little rough; if you always change tactics, you are a flake and you will never get anything accomplished.”

“…yeah.”

“I will see you the same time tomorrow, Mr. Akzar? I expect a little more of a challenge, if you would.”

Scyeth blinked, looking bewildered for just a second before his fiery grin took its rightful place. “You’re on, Adviser. Be prepared to lose.”

“We’ll see, Mr. Akazar. One step at a time. We will aim for a less embarrassing round and go from there.”
