Folk and Viking metal are almost dead to me xp

They are to me. I just never cared for it.

I can't find anything different in those genres. All the bands just sound like Fintroll and Ensiferum.

I just really don't like flutes and other such instruments in metal. Just leave it out, man, and play some badass riffs.

I like the fun melodies that a lot of them have.

What Genre of Metal really just bugs you?

Me: Power Metal.

I really just don't like it. The vocals are annoying, the guitar solos are too long, the dramatic elemts are over the tops, and usually the lyrics are just cheesy.

I used to really love the genre but no if i find out it's power Metal, I don't even both listening to it. Because 9.9/10 I hate it.
You just described Dragonforce xd

Well, there are some artists in every genre that I really like, but I would have to say that the one genre that I do not really like at all is the Second Wave Black Metal, that s**t scares the s**t out of me. (MayheM specifically) But it isn't the music so much as the ideology, like the murder of other band members and etc.

Isn't Venom the supposed originator of Black metal? (don't hold me to that, it is just a question)

first wave BM bands - venom, hellhammer/celtic frost, mercyful fate, bathory. they all began around the same time, but i think venom was the first.

Okay, thanks. What happened between then and Second wave that made things so... not good?

personally i prefer second wave musically. but when you look at the psychology and ideology, it's easily explained. they were a bunch of 17 year old kids who were outcasts from their society. they were different, abandoned by everyone else, they felt alone, and they banded together into these small groups. in their own minds it was quite literall them against the world, every man for himself. in mayhem, dead committed suicide. varg vikernes was paranoid and thought euronymous was planning to kill him, so he struck first - although there is no evidence that big E planned to kill varg. faust's killing of the gay man in lillehammer was an attack on the society that had abandoned him. the church burnings were a form of groupthink - you've got this small society of like-minded individuals who are complete outcasts. they want to make their society pay, so they go burn churches. finally the rivalry between norwegian and swedish 2nd wave bands was about more than just music - although the swedish bands ARE worse. the norwegian bands didnt feel that the swedes were as dedicated to "the cause" they had developed and so they came to despise these "poseurs." what went wrong between first and second wave? it's simple - the second wave members simply weren't mature enough to deal with their problems in a sensible, non-violent way, with the exception of ihsahn from emperor, and the guys in immortal. those guys were sensible, but the other band members were largely immature and dealt with problems poorly. nowadays you see the older members of the 2nd wave, such as samoth and mortiis, regret that the crimes became a part of that wave of black metal. of course, some crazy ******** are still out there, and gaahl from gorgoroth thinks the church-burnings were good and should be done more often. but he's ******** insane.

basically these 17 year olds started out using satan as a metaphor for rebellion, and then got sucked into their own ideology/imagery/mythology and things went to hell. pun intended.

Wow I really like that explaination...brings Black Metal into a whole new...errr light for me....sorry had no other way of explaining it. xd

As for me I still consider myself in a growing process as far as learning and understanding the different genres of metal. As for now I would have to say raw Death Metal can get annoying at times..well at least for a certain amount of time for me with repetitions. At first I did like Drone but that got old quick. Raw Black Metal I have never really got into either. Oh and most Grindcore I find repetitive I only listen to a couple bands...they all just sound the same to me. I wouldn't say I hate Prog. Metal just have never gotten into it.

Hmm I only listen to a couple Folk Metal bands. The ones I have heard the only different are the folk instruments that are played.

It's the same with every genre someone doesn't like or care to listen to. They think that they all use the same melodies. Also naming the two most well known bands for each genre doesn't help either. I can't stand black metal for the most part, and I could argue that very few bands stand out from each other, BUT I can't stand Black Metal. I don't listen to it, if I can help it- aside from a few good bands- so my ear does not care to be trained to the "music" they play. I can tell differences and I'm not claiming that every band sounds the same or has the same melody. I can think of a few bands that Panda might like according to his taste but why bother since he seems so against it in the first place.

Yeah, That makes sense. I have always wondered why people think all thrash and Trad. Doom are the same.

Nice, I really like them, shame the vocalist died before they could do more. And a good example of how not all Trad. Doom is the same as well.
