Kalevi listened to the kit, showing no outward reaction as she spoke.
She had...potential. He would not let her know that; not yet. Words were one thing, and actions another. Still, if she actually did what she promised, she could be very useful indeed. Obedient, and willing to die for the Earth. As could very well be required of her, in this conflict that still had not ended.
Testing that obedience while her brave words still hung in the air didn't seem the right thing to do. He could think of a few things he could make her do, later on, to prove that obedience.
Still: she seemed to give the question some thought. Presumably Aelin or any of the others would know that he would ask such a question. Had she not been told? Was she acting from a script: 'pause so long, and then deliver such and such a message'?
He would worry about those theories later. Right now he had to deal with the concrete fact of the kit.
The kit, the kit, he referred to her as nothing but the kit. Had he truly never gotten her name?
"Your name, kit." He studied her, stared at her, watching her reactions.
Then, almost as if an afterthought: "I suppose keeping you on the Earth lands is the best idea. You'll wind up here anyway in your sleep, won't you?"

Lin chuckled to herself; she hadn't expected a direct anwer to her response, and Kalevi had just proven her right. "Lin," she told him confidently. "With no relation to Aelin, if that's what you're thinking."
Not sure what she was supposed to do, the almost-adult stood up, casually examining the area around her once more as she tried to guess where he would take her.
Giving up on that, she eventually just decided to answer him. "Yes, I would," she confirmed.
((Sorry, wasn't sure what else to post without Lin just staring off into space for minutes on end. XD))

Now what? He had little experience in the training of recruits outside of the Earth element. The physical training for fighting; that he knew. But the mental training that was needed for someone to whom the ways of Earth were foreign was not something he was intimately familiar with.
What a lack of foresight he had had. A decent tactician if he did say so himself, a skilled fighter, able to teach those skills to others. He knew some about hunting, gathering, healing, and scouting, enough that he was able to survive on his own when it was necessary.
He knew nothing of kits. He knew nothing of those who had been born outside the Earth element.
Of course he was stuck with both now.
"What do you know about this tribe?" he finally asked her, probing for knowledge. "Either from what you've heard any of us say, or from anything you might have known prior to coming here."
He waited, listening, wondering how much his discussion with Pangaia had revealed to her.
The question while not exactly trivial, was a stall, until he could formulate a long range plan of what to do with the kit.
Lin. 'No relation to Aelin'.
Well, they would see.

"I admittedly don't know much," Lin said with a frustrated sigh. "When I was younger, some of the elder members of the tribe I lived with spoke of a land dominated by all the elements, governed by embodiments of nature. But...well, all these members ever did was talk. I took their words as fable, a myth. Since I was born to two tribes, I left quickly; I was on my own a lot until I reached this place, and that was the only previous knowledge I had."
"Here, though..." she trailed off, looking around. "Ever since I can remember, I felt tied to the earth around me, and the tie seemed to be calling me here. Lo and behold, there was the fabled land of my elders. I noticed quickly that all of you are deeply divided, and some great war has been taking place here, for far beyond my lifespan. Far beyond even yours, I believe. I know these lands were supposed to represent the harmony of nature at one point, but everything seems out of balance now, as if one leader tipped the scale, and now everyone has slid to the opposite end, desperate to keep their grip on survival."
Lin recognzed the purpose behind the question, but did bluntly point it out. "I am capable of taking care of myself, sir," she told him. "You need not worry about keeping me alive."

Kalevi contemplated what she had said. Perhaps this tribe had once represented nature and its balance. Perhaps this tribe had once represented war. Whatever the original intent of the tribe had been, it had been long forgotten. No one knew for certainty what it had been.
So the kit had at least one piece of misinformation. Would Aelin be clever enough to do such a thing?
Possibly.
Everything else the kit knew was glaringly obvious, and Kalevi would not be surprised if it were known by all.
He thought over his reply only briefly, and then spoke it.
"You had best be. Or else you'll end up dead. Because I'm not going to be your mommy, and protect you against the others. Some war hasn't been taking place: it is still taking place. And it'll keep taking place until we're all dead, I assure you." Kalevi knew that was probably the most he had said directly to the kit at one point. He gave a moment, just to see how she would react to him saying so much, before posing the next question.
"Of which two tribes are your parents? How much time did you spend with each parent or tribe?"
