Well here comes the blind ranger. +4 Hey I just looked at the elf's bonuses to skills and I realized I never bother adding in the +2 in search, spot, or listen. Does 18 make it?

You look around, but can't find the source of the sound. In your defense, you were very close. By the way, considering your emphasis on listen, have you considered taking the "keen-eared scout" feat?

I still stare at the wall were the noise was coming from just out of safety precautions. I would say yes but I don't think I heard of it.

It's in the PHBII. If you beat a listen check by a certain amount you can learn more about the sound. At the highest level, it borders on clairvoyance.(it's an orc in adamantine full-plate, knocking down a ceramic vase full of flowers!)
For a while, you continue to hear the sound, but nothing seems to happen. You can just barely make out a shadow on the other side of the window.

I try and refocus on the window hoping I can make something out of it. 11+4=15

You see the figure trying to open the latch again, but after a few minutes they give up.

20+15=35 search, well there goes my one natural 20.
I check to see if the window opens up on my side.

Almost immediately, you notice a small latch that will allow you to open the window. The hinges are recessed slightly, so as not to show from either side, but allow the window to swing both outwards and inwards.

I quickly grab my shortsword, before I open the latch up for the window.

Try as you might to open the latch, it won't even budge. It doesn't seem to be particularly large or heavy, but you can't even attempt to move it.

I don't mean to ruin your fun, but you might as well quit if you don't have a "knock" spell.
You strain against the lock once again, but to no avail. The latch won't move, though it seems to be sitting loosely against the window.
